Ocean Ratings and Reviews
We visit a few times a year for the grilled lobster tail. The hostess was kind enough to ensure an order was saved for my daughter as she said they were out of lobster. Which she did and my daughter loved them. The oyster selection was fewer than usual, but still excellent. The Ocean Salad with fried Feta is one of my wife's favorites. However, although the fried feta normally arrives still warm in the middle, this time it tasted as if it was fried the day before. The gulf coast shrimp entree was very good. My tuna was well prepared by the entire dish just did not click. The fried calamari was good. The desserts, as always, were fantastic. A lot of competition in Bham for that dining price point. You come to expect their A game every time as a result. This time, a B+
The food was ok, but kind of bland and definitely needed extra seasoning at the table. The dessert was really good. We didn’t have on dinner jackets so we were made to sit in the back corner of the restaurant even though i specifically requested a booth table in a great location via opentable. The waiters were friendly and the dessert was good. I was happy they had valet service.
Great selection of fresh seafood! Being from the Gulf Coast I was not sure it would compare with some of our local restaurants, I was wrong! The crab cakes were fabulous, the grouper was so fresh, scallops were delicious! Great wine list, dessert was great. We will return the next time we are in Birmingham.
So it started out really great. Till we decided to order crab legs. The waitress brought us the bowl and the crackers and out plates for the crab legs. We waited for about 45 minutes then our waitress came to our table and told us that they ran out of crab legs. Why did it take that long to find out you’re out of a certain meal item that is on your menu. So she apologizes and says usually when you make reservations you ask to reserve the food that you want so we’ll have some left for you. As if it’s my fault you ran outta food and i didn’t get to have the crab legs. So instead we ordered the lobster which took another 30 minutes to get. About time we got the food we were already over this meal and ready to leave . We drove from North Carolina to Alabama to visit some food places and one of the oldest taverns in Alabama. Totally disappointed in ocean. I understand things happen , I’ve been in the food industry and still own 3 restaraunts . It doesn’t take almost 45 minutes to find out you’re outta food especially crab legs which is your money maker.
We had a very lovely evening. We had a very friendly and informative server. I think his name was Sean. You could tell he enjoyed his work! We enjoyed our appetizers very much. I liked my lobster but wished I had ordered it prepared in another way. It was boiled I think. It was good but not great. The cocktails we had were awesome and the wine that Sean recommended were right on!
My husband and I celebrated our 18 Years wedding anniversary in Ocean. It was our first time and we came or I would say I came with high expectations as always when I dine in a fine restaurant but I was very disappointed. I order Bouillabaisse and it was served with uncooked Jasmine rice and that’s just ruin the Asian girl dinner.😞 My husband and I keep saying maybe we just ordered a wrong entree. Maybe??!!! I don’t know unless we give them another chance.😏
Food was outstanding, but thee room was exceptionally noisy. There was nice spacing between tables so that we did not feel we were listening in on the conversations at surrounding tables. Our experience certainly rivaled Hot'n Hot Fish Club for the quality of our food.
Do not miss this restaurant. Fresh seafood prepared with a twist. Everything is very fresh tasting and not too heavy. For dessert we had the cheesecake on the carrot cake crust. Holy smokes. That was the BEST dessert. (I’ve gotten to where I don’t order cheesecake because I’m always disappointed). Do not miss that dessert. Great experience. HIGHLY recommend b
Our new favorite! On the recommendation of a friend, I took my wife for a nice anniversary dinner. The ambiance was great, the service fantastic, and food was phenomenal! After an incredible eggplant appetizer, I had grilled grouper and my wife had a fried shrimp dish. Both were some of the best we had eaten. Both were eclipsed by the pecan pie cobbler with vanilla ice cream. A bit pricey but worth it! We will definitely be back!
Everything at ocean was wonderful except for the restrooms. The door to the women's room was filthy on the outside next to the metal push plate. Inside was not clean and very Unitarian in style. Would have expected more based on the level of service offered...decor and style should extend throughout entire restaurant.
I always wonder why I let so much time go by before going back to Ocean. My memory is that I always enjoy the food and the service and that remained true with my most recent visit. But, there is one reason that I'm not here several times of year and my memory is triggered the moment I walk in the front door. It's the smoke smell that overpowers everything in the restaurant. They have a very poor ventilation system in the kitchen and consequently the smoke hangs in the air. When you go home at night your suit will smell like smoke for days. When you're enjoying your first cocktail, you can't help but notice the smoke even if you sit far away from the kitchen. It's a shame, because I really do love the food and the outstanding service. If it wasn't for this one flaw, I could safely say that it would be one of my favorite restaurants. The good news is later next year I'll forget why I haven't been back in such a long time. Who knows, maybe someday they will actually fix it.
