Ocean Room - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
I went to Ocean on a Saturday evening when visiting San Diego because my son wanted sushi and my daughter seafood pasta. The sushi was quite good and reasonably priced. There was a very long wait, although the restaurant had warned us that it was due to the large party, which looked like to be form the Convention Center. The seafood pasta was okay.
Well my reservations was made for 10pm on Friday, June 1, 2016 but when we arrived they told us they were closing at 10pm and it clearly states on the window or door that they close at 12 midnight. So my first experience was not great at all. Would not consider recommendations to anyone for this place if they can't honor a simple family reservation without good reason other than we're closing at an hour not posted!!
My Boyfriend and I went the day before valentines Day and almost no one was there. The food was Delicious and so were the martinis. It was a very easy going night, not too much noise. However parking was a nightmare, But it is the gas lamp district so we were expecting it.
The sushi here is great, especially the Spicy Tuna Roll. The sushi chef and the waitstaff are personable and efficient. You can't find a better happy hour. The outdoor seating is preferred to the indoor seating. The inside is clean but tired and sadly drab.
Sat on the patio to watch the Comic-Con parade. The sushi was pretty good, my cucumber mojito was pretty good too. Patio is small and a little crowded. Not sure what to make of the staff, they weren't consistent with the level of service. (ie, I told the waiter to bring me a second drink before happy hour ended. He was pre-occupied chatting with another guest. Even after I flagged him down, he took his time getting to me.) The busboy seemed more attentive...
I'd probably go again.
Took a group of cutomers there after looking over the web site and seeing decent recommendations. Fact is, it was the only place willing to seat our large party, so I did not have much of a choice. I should have just split the table at a much nicer place.
The Bar / Chef Cooking area are all upfront in plain sight. Thinking it was a Sushi bar, I didnt realize ALL of the cooking woudl be done by the one person with a chef hat on. 1 chef, 1 bartender, 1 waiter. Our party pretty much took up every seat in the place besides the bothes, which meant that we should have got great service and fantastic food.
Unfortunately, both food quality and service were below what I expected. We didnt stick around for desert as it took us just over 2 hours to get our entres.
Would not recomend this to anyone looking for a good sushi / seafood restaurant in the Gaslamp district. There are MANY other options that are fantastic in the area.
Great healthy menu with Asian flare & great sushi. Service is a little slow. They need to staff up during peak times and events but they apparently don't get the message from past comments. Hostess was a sweetheart and warned us that serving time would be a little slow so we were not anxious when we sat down to order. Food was delicious and wait staff was apologetic.
a group of 10 went here on a sunday night (WITH RESERVATIONS), before the Paul McCartney concert at Petco Park. They were horribly understaffed. None of the food came out together, soups were forgot, salads brought after entree, and ZERO attention to our table. We had to chase down someone to try and find our waiter. 3 of our party left, before getting their food, after being there for an hour.
You would think the managers /GM would have known 40,000+ people were heading downtown for this concert and would have put some forethought into staffing. There were no managers working... leaving their staff to try and serve a packed house.
I WILL NOT EVER GO BACK OR RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT!
With so many choices downtown, pick some place else.
One of our entrees had clam shell shards in the broth and it was sent back. The other was advertised as blackened sea bass but it was battered and fried. The only saving grace on this was the spicy tartar sauce.
They didn't have blue cheese so they couldn't stuff olives for our martinis.
Food & service by our bar man was great! We were lucky that they had room at the bar because the didn't have our open table reservation when we arrived. Worked out because it was just me & a friend but not sure I'd use open table again for a res at this place.
We went to the happy hour for an early dinner before going back to the hotel to get ready to dance the night away at the Onyx nightclub. The food was excellent, and especially the 1/2 price sushi rolls, which were exceptional! The portions are generous, the calamari was great and also the oysters at a great price. A very popular spot on 5th!
Great sushi, great service, great ambience. There are a lot of choices in the Gaslamp District, so if you're having trouble making a decision (and who wouldn't?), then get a little crazy and try the Ocean Room. If you're lucky, Megs will be your server, so instead of wasting time doing that "what looks good?" thing with your forefinger and your lips, you can just trust a great server for her brilliant recommendations. Life is long! (seriously, what's longer than life?) Live well!
Have found my new FAVORITE place for Sushi ! This was our 1st time here too.
We had the rolls, we like to split them. We ate 4 rolls, We Never eat 4. If we had bigger stomachs we would have eaten more it was that good. Picture eating a really good desert where you close your eyes and say "UMMMMMMM". Seriously the rolls we ate were that good! The wine recommended was excellent. The Bartender really knew his stuff.
The only thing slightly negative was the parking, it was 4 blocks away & in 3 inch heels her feet hurt when we got there, but it was a great way to walk off dinner...LOL. Next time I think we might try out one of those bicycle cabs.
reservation made for 5:30, resturant was half full. 1st course arrived at 6:15, 2nd course a little after 7. By 7:30 i asked for our desserts to go. Resturant was filling up when we started to leave.i felt sorry for the wait staff who kept apologizing for the slow service. salad was good, sushi roll was ok, chocolate genache dessert not good at all.
