We've always enjoyed O'Brien's and are bracing ourselves for the 18 months it will be closed before reopening in the new hotel.

The food was good/okay depends on what you get. Loud and the service was not that good. They didn't have change for cash given we could give a credit card or we had to wait till they ran to the bank.

The hostess was a bit of a mess, and thought we were coming an hour later. Then didn't check us in, so Open Table thought we'd skipped our reservation, which we did not.
Food was fine - very casual.
Service was slow to start, but then fine.
Great views of the water. Ideal for a quick lunch outside!

First, I made a resveration for 11 people ahead of time. It started with the woman who sat us down. She was nice at first when she sat me and my boyfriend down as we waited for the rest of my family but then she left them wondering where our table was. She said she didn't know which party they were talking about after they and the manager found us themselves. She rolled her eyes lifted her arms up with confusion and walked off.
Our server gave us terrible service. There was a language barrier, which wasn't that bad, but she was also very rude and began to roll her eyes while taking orders and then eventually she just never came back after she argued with one of my guest on how she got her order wrong when we finally got our food.
My reservation was at 6:45 and we didn't get our food until 8:15 when we specified that we were in a time crunch for a show near by and had to leave at 8:40. After going to the manager many times, the waitor finally brought out our food but brought it out and left and when I say left he didn't even give us our plates even after we said we were in a rush.
We barely enjoyed our food because we were busy scoffing it down quickly or packing our food up as soon as we got it in some cases. I only enjoyed my moscato which is the only thing I recommend.
Also, I went there for my birthday, and I have a chocolate allergy so my father told them so they could surprise me and then told them about my allergy and the cake had chocolate.
I thanked the one waitress that tried her best to fix everything because at least she tried whereas our original waitress just disappeared.
If I wanted to go somewhere with terrible service I would have went to "Dicks Last Resort" where you are SUPPOSED to get shitty service ON PURPOSE and pay less for it.

It was Fathers Day. All our kids came in town.
Took forever for drink orders from there it never got better. Waiter was below average but in his defense he had way to many tables. He was taking care of sidewalk plus the inside. Mixed up dinner orders It got to the point the water boy was trying to help us with food orders.
It is too bad. I was hoping for a gem in the neighborhood.

O'Brien's remains a good choice, particularly for before or after Second City performances. And either eat outside or get a window seat. Old Town remains one of the best locations for people watching in Chicago, and in addition to their food, O'Briens gives you a front row seat.

We went here for brunch for a big party and everything was set up nice. The food was great. It was very classy. The service was slow. It took a long time to serve the food... Again, this was brunch food.

We were very unhappy with the service. I am not sure the server spoke English and the quality of the food was not good. I ordered the pork chop and I asked for it to be medium rare. It came well. My husband ordered the pot pie and a side of Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese was ice cold. We told the waitress and they took it back and stuck it in the microwave. I will not go back! Every time we said something to the server, she looked at us like she did not understand what we were saying, and I don't think she did

The food was good but unfortunately the service was not. There were multiple items forgotten through out our meal. I ordered a chicken caesar salad for dinner and specified that I was gluten free, I received a caesar salad with no chicken and croutons on top. Croutons are no biggie, I should have been more specific, just picked them off, but the main part of my dinner was missing. It was of course corrected after I waited another 5-10mins, but annoying to say the least. My dad ordered the new york strip, rare, with a glass of wine. The steak was served medium rare at best and he had to ask again for his wine. There was also a side a fries forgotten, which were supposed to be seasoned fries, and once we finally received them they were just regular fries, we didn't even ask for that to be corrected because at this point we just wanted to finishing eating, because he had some where to be. I will say the best thing about our visit was the sweet and sour cabbage soup, that was delicious and served promptly with no problems.

We went after theater so didn't want a huge meal that late. We were happy to see so many small plate or sharable options. And the waitress was fun. All in all a very pleasant experience.

Thanks! Had a reservation for the max, but was able to alter it as we were having a surprise brunch bday! Everything was perfect. The space, the staff, (even accommodating by splitting the bill up for us!) I will be back plenty! Brunch time is the best time!

Four of us went there for dinner Saturday evening after an afternoon play. Have not been there in many years and several favorite items were missing from the very shortened menu. I would had liked more choices since I somewhat reluctantly ordered the shepherd pie which I found rather soupy and somewhat spicey. Value was reasonable but service was the best. Our waiter was Wilson who was a totally efficient server and a very likable, personable guy.

We were there for an early dinner following an afternoon show at Second City.
The food was great, the restaurant is casual, but nice.
The only complaint was the service was much too fast, it was 6:00pm on Saturday night, there were only about five tables full, but, our waitress must have come to our table five times in the first ten minutes we were there. We weren't in any hurry, we told her we weren't ready to order, but there she was. Much better than waiting forever, but, we were done eating and paid within about 35 minutes of getting there. We would have had a second drink, but not enough time...

Vintage building with a lot of history. Nicely preserved with period decor without being dated and stuffy. Service was efficient and helpful. Not a huge menu but the food was good. The French onion soup had good flavor and was not overly salty. Restaurant has it's own free parking lot. Great feature for suburbanites.

Food was good to acceptable, salad was not overly generous in size. A limited menu so I guess they do what they do fairly well but it would be nice to have a few more options. More interesting salads (kale, quinoa?) and more generous portions of salad (i.e. vegetables). One in our party just wanted plain bread pudding and was disappointed with the Irish whiskey added to it. Service was attentive and prompt, got louder than we would have liked even with only a few other parties in the place but that's not unusual, just the way a lot of restaurants are now.

Business is a participant in Restaurant.com. Such businesses have an opportunity to set restrictions specific to their restaurant on certificates purchased from this web site. These restrictions are cited on each certificate. We regularly go to this and other participating restaurants and closely read and follow such restrictions.

We purchased a $15 off certificate. We ultimately decided to eat at O'Briens on Easter Sunday, running up a $70 tab and meeting ALL required criteria.

O'BRIENS REFUSED TO HONOR THE CERTIFICATE, stating it could not be used on a holiday. We pointed out that no such restriction was listed on the certificate - we even showed them an example of another Restaurant.com participant whose certificate HAS such a restriction so they could see that theirs clearly did not. They still refused. We requested to speak with the general manager and he refused to discuss with us.

We paid, left and will never be back despite having gone there dozens of times in the past.

We have been to O'Briens several times and love it but this is the first time for brunch (Easter brunch). The food offered was very good but I was expecting something more special, or different, the food offerings were safe and basic. O'Briens did offer salmon and cream cheese that were good but no bagels to put them on!?!

O'Briens is a great place for lunch and dinner off the menu but the brunch was just okay.

After many Italian meals I wanted my husband to taste an Irish fare. Fortunately O'Briens had a St. Patrick's Day special of corned beef and cabbage. It was delicious! My only wish is that they had more Irish specialties year round; like Irish Soda Bread, lamb stew, leg of lamb . . . . .
More Irish ambience. O'Briens does have that old school Chicago feel and we enjoyed our dinner very much!

My little family dined here the other night as a result of receiving a restaurant.com gift certificate and a desire to have steak. The food was prepared well enough but nothing special to note. Service was a little hot and cold. The hostess was cold and the waiter seemed new but did check in on us to ensure we had what we needed. A bit overpriced for what you get. Too many other restaurants out there that we'd likely choose over this one.
