Obao Ratings and Reviews
I have been to this restaurant many times and usually it's good but this time the host was terrible. We made a reservation and eve thought there was only 3 tables being used the host wanted to seat us at a table in the middle of the room even though I specified that I wanted a corner quite table. For 5 minutes he was telling me that they are reserved which to me was odd because I reserved too so why was I getting a crappy table. Anyways after the unnecessary backtalk we finally got seated and even after we were done there were like 8 empty tables so the attitude was completely uncalled for. The host definitely needs to learn how to talk to customers, and take his attitude down a few notches.
This place was such a great find! The food was great, the prices very reasonable and the waitstaff was incredibly attentive. I was catching up with a friend I hadn't seen in a long time, and they were so accommodating-they didn't rush us, but also made sure we were being taken care of.
I will definitely go back!
We enjoyed everything about this restaurant. Every single attendant was courteous, attentive, and on point. The pre-fixe selection was delicious and at a very good price. The restaurant is very well decorated and clean.
We highly recommend this establishment and thank you, Obao, for a memorable meal/ experience.
I ate here with friends prior to seeing a show. The cocktails were original and very tasty. The food was delicious. We split the papaya salad, and edamame to start, and both were very nicely prepared and very fresh. I had Pad Thai and it was very good. Nice portions and fair prices. Would definitely go back
I selected OBAO after looking at the yelp reviews. We were a group of 7 and our dietary requirements was vegetarian - no meat, no eggs, no fish/oyster sauce. Our server was very helpful with recommendations for the dishes that would meet our dietary requirements.
We had a decent set of choices for the appetizers (CRISPY VEGETABLE SPRING ROLLS, VEGETABLE DUMPLINGS, KIMCHEE FRIES, PAPAYA SALAD, EDAMAME). We liked the veg. dumplings the best and order 3 portions for ourselves.
Unfortunately, we found that only a limited number of entrees met our requirements. We ordered PAD THAI & BUN - SAUTEED VEGETABLES for noodles. The Pad Thai was okay but we found the bun noodles to be pretty bland. For entrees we ordered BASIL FRIED RICE & EGGPLANT TOFU WITH SPICY GARLIC SAUCE and these were probably the best dishes.
I felt that we would have ordered more if there had been more vegetarian/vegan choice. I specifically asked for the Penang curry but the server told me that it had a fish sauce.
Overall, I liked OBAO for its ambiance, service and decent food but I feel there is a lot of room for improvement if the restaurant caters to vegetarian/vegan customers.
There are so many good food choices at Obao. The ingredients are high quality and fresh and some of the choices are very inventive. One of my favorites is the vegetable dumpling appetizer. Not like dumplings anywhere else. These are made with fresh corn and peas and are delicious. The meats in the main courses are such high quality: the steak, duck, pork. shrimp are all the best and cooked in very tantalizing ways. Service is wonderful, and, for those of us who need it, explanations of menu dishes are well stated; the staff is very helpful. But you must save room for dessert: Chocolate Forest is to die for. Dark Chocolate mousse covered in pistachio crumbles served with creamy pistachio ice cream on a plate sprinkled with cocoa powder. OMG! The best dessert I've ever had. and then top that off with Vietnamese iced coffee-another treat.
Decently priced Thai food with some Vietnamese influences that leaves a lot to be desired in terms of customer service. This is the first establishment where my guests and I had to pay before we finished eating. I found it a bit awkward and rude that my guests in the middle of lunch had to pay for their meal-- I get that the lunch hours were finishing but this is not how you earn the trust of your clientele. I would say the food selections were fairly good, but I couldn't get this bad taste out of my mouth.
The food is below average. We had to return a beef dish since the beef was very chewy. Also, it took a long time for the appetizer to arrive. The warp for the vegetable roll was one of the worst quality which tastes like thick dough. The place is clearly overrated by other comments which led us to go. I would not recommend to anyone who is truly enjoy good quality of Asian food.
food is ok but really bad staff. don't expect them to accommodate you for anything-- don't go there for a birthday or any other special event as they won't care to make it special and will be stubborn if you want to try to change something (or give you a menu where half of the items are not available but offer it as a 'special')
If you go I hope you have a better experience than I did. I did have a 9:45 pm reservation on a Tuesday and it was for just me, and they close at 10:30, so maybe they were all tired. But the hostess was rude (and seemed unhappy) and the food was not spicy at all and kind of lukewarm. They seated me at a table that faced their computers so I had no good view (and took the other chair for another table). I was excited to go as a friend had recommended but I wouldn't go back sadly. Maybe better for a group or earlier in the night.
Love Obao, perfect for pre theater. Drinks are really delicious and so is the food. My only issue with service was that I felt a bit rushed. we order appys. We were catching up talking enjoying out drinks and appy. Dinner came out our plates were not cleared form the appys, food runner is shoving plates with out clearing and our waiter proceeded to clear food into dirty plates right by our side and stack all plates. not very appetizing!!! I think they need a bit more training on that. But everything else was great and that would not stop me from going back.
Food is great!! Service and setting marginal at best. Loud and crowded, which I understand because the food really is excellent and a good value. The staff is barely friendly and very disinterested in paying attention to you. I’d recommend take out, and won’t go back for dining in, which will likely not happen since we don’t live in the City.
Went to Obao on a Tuesday and it was very busy. Thankfully we had a reservation but still waited 15 minutes for a table. The meals we had were all very good and the service was always there to fill your water or get you anything else. Drinks were quite fun also. Would definitely go back!
we ordered several appetizers and entrees and shared everything, so I can report that everything was delicious. we asked the server for recommendations and she did not disappoint. Even their drink specials were delicious. I would highly recommend this restaurant!
Had a pre-theatre dinner at Obao. They serve a fusion of Thai and Vietnamese cuisines, and there was something on the menu to appeal to everyone in the group. We particularly liked the Roasted Duck Noodles and the Basil Fried Rice (full of shrimp). The wine choices were fine, and there was a very tasty "house red" at a very good price ($8/glass). Given that we're in NYC and within a quick walk of many Broadway theaters, I'd have to classify this place as a true bargain. We told the servers that we had a show to attend, and they were very accommodating to our schedule. They do offer a prix fixe pre-theatre menu (which we did not have), but ordering off the regular menu was quick and efficient. The decor of the downstairs and upstairs dining rooms is quite interesting (modern Asian), and there is a very energetic bar scene on the ground floor.
