With the success of our Flagship restaurant in midtown and Water Street location, OBAO is proud to unveil its Hell's Kitchen location located on 9th avenue between 45th&46th.
Our first experience at Obao was a pre-theatre lunch. We started with the spring rolls. They were fresh, crispy and not as flavorful with spices as I had hoped but my husband liked them more than I did. For lunch, I had the crispy duck leg, my husband had the sliced short rib. My dish, which included lychee nuts, pineapple and eggplant was super....a really delicious melding of robust flavors. My husband's dish included grilled onions and sliced hot chilis in a lemongrass broth. This was tasty but drier than he would have liked. This is not the fault of the restaurant, but if you order that dish you should know not to expect a soupy one. The service was extremely attentive and friendly; the ambiance was lively - yet the noise level was quite manageable.
All around us the other patrons were ordering noodle dishes and that's what we will try on our second visit, though that duck leg might call to me again.
Unfortunately, even though we had a reservation, we waited 40 minutes for our table. The people walking in off of the street were quoted at 45 minutes, so we didn’t wait much less. Otherwise, once we were sat, our service was good and the food was also goo (although it was really spicy).
This restaurant has always delicious food and quick service. We just came 5 minutes late (I called earlier) and with lots of people, this made all the difference. There was a slight wait, as a result. However, it was our fault and the hostess was understanding and accommodating. Thank you.
It was my family’s first time at OBAO and it was INCREDIBLE. We no doubt had the best table in the house that overlooked the beautiful decor in the restaurant. Every item we ordered was the most delicious Asian fusion food I have ever had. We ordered spring rolls, dumplings and kimchi fries for appetizers and for meals we had duck pad thai and beef pad see iew. Our server Jeremy was very sweet and everyone else who helped out was courteous, kind and professional. Great food, great drinks - I cannot wait to come back with my husband for him to experience it. I thoroughly recommend making a reservation at OBAO!
Had a great time celebrating my sister's birthday. The staff was accommodating about our early arrival. The food was yummy! The wine and cocktails were very good and if you get there before 6 pm ( even on weekends) it's Happy Hour prices! We we're all very pleased with our dishes and with the overall experience. Will be back!
1) Chicken noodles were too spicy
Although the food was good hostess at the front was nasty and unaccommodating.
It ruined our experience.
Great food and service! I would definitely come back. The only thing that bothered me was the lanterns hanging in the ceiling of the restaurant. Although very beautiful, they are visually covered with dust.
The menu is good and the food doesn't disappoint. Service is not their strong point. We found it cold and unresponsive. No big misses just no personality. We made a reservation, but table wasn't ready, so we sat at the bar and had a drink. When our table was ready we had to close out the bar bill before they would sit us. not a huge deal, just a bit unusual.
Amazing place. Love all of the appetizers. Large variety and everything tastes great!
Cool ambiance with great food for a good price! Our waitress was attentive.
Love OBAO! Came here for a couples dinner and it was so lovely. The interior is gorgeous, and dim lit— perfect for date night. A bit loud, but that is expected for Saturday night. The food was delicious and was a great price for the amount of food. We felt like they were rushing us slightly— but we were able to enjoy the evening overall so no complaints!
The service was excellent but my dish of rice noodles, tofu and vegetables with a poached egg on top lacked flavor. It needed more vegetables and some kind of sauce.
The pho ga was very bland and had little to no flavor. The pad see iew was burnt and had a weird aftertaste. Definitely not worth the price. Would not come here again.
I am a frequent visitor to this Hell’s Kitchen location. Service is always friendly and food consistently good.
Great to have a bowl of hot soupy pho noodles in a cold winter NY.
Aesthetic atmosphere, great food, awesome service
Family came into town. Food was amazing as was the service. However the restaurant was very crowded so make sure to make reservations and it was a little loud. Over would definitely go back.
Wonderful food, fast service, friendly and attentive staff. Great pre theater dinner.
Very busy place. Food is good. Small space so is very noisy and tables are very close so they can fit more in. So it is like ur eating dinner with the table next to u and u can hear their conversations.
Had such a good time at Obao. Food was amazing. We had spicy dumplings and kimchi fries to start. Fries were crispy with a light coating. Delicious. Dinners were good as well. Will definitely be back.
While our appetizers were very good and tasty my main course was dried out and lacked flavor. I will say that my two guests did enjoy their main dishes though. The place was completely packed and the service was inattentive at times.
I made reservations well in advance and was seated at a terrible table- my wife wanted Jim Beam bourbon which they did not have . The place is not quite clean enough and the noise level was abominable. The appetizers were good- had the fresh shrimp roll and vegetable roll. The main course was terrible. My wife ordered a pad Thai which had no taste. I ordered a duck dish and could not decipher the type of meat that was in the dish. My recommendation is to avoid this restaurant at all costs. I will not return
Beautiful place with very nice and helpful wait staff! The food was good but not the best.
Overall a great experience - service, food -
noise level uncomfortable and tables a bit close together. Otherwise a very good meal.
The food was excellent. We felt a little rushed by the staff to turn the table. Felt like staff should ask if we are trying to get to a show or not. They had us (table of 4) in/out of there in 80 minutes. Too fast to relax.
Overall though, enjoyed the restaurant and will come back again.
Excellent food, ambiance and noise level.
Can't recommend this place enough. Top-notch, zero complaints.
Obao is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. The food is excellent, service is very good, and it's a fun, lively place. It does get noisy after 6pm and it can feel crowded because tables are very close together, but it's not a huge place. Happy hour specials are great, too! 5 stars all around..
Food was good, nothing outstanding but absolutely good re price.
Best Pho Bo in nyc!
The hosts seem unable to manage reservations and the fancy buzzer-waiting system they have. Had to wait 25' for a table even though we had a reservation. The food was fine but having the hosts' inability to service customers kind of ruin everything.
It was a bit of a cluster when we arrived 15 minutes early for a 7:00 reservation. The entranceway was jammed up. But, oh so worth it. This is far and away some of the best Thai food I have ever eaten. My wife had the Tom Yum Soup. I had a few spoonfuls and loved every bit. I had the ground chicken and string beans. I always take leftovers home. I can’t remember the last time I finished an entire meal. I would go back to NYC from Boston just to go to this restaurant. Great find.
Excellent place for great Thai before a show, or anytime. My new favorite for Thai.
Food and service were excellent. Just the right balance of spice and food flavors. The level of salt was slightly overpowering and practically unnecessary given the abundance of herbs and spices. Otherwise, just excellent Thai food.
A great meal at a very reasonable price. Service was very good and their specialty drinks are excellent too.
I visited Obao for Valentines Day. Even though it was very busy, the food came quickly and the service was attentive. We had the fresh shrimp roles and kimchi fries for starters and both were solid choices but not outstanding. I had pad Thai and while it was good, I have had better.
The restaurant itself was very dark, making it nearly impossible to read the menu. But the decor and music were nice.
Great service and amazing food.
Good food, ok service.
