About Numero 28 Pizzeria Napoletana 1st Ave.
Welcome to Numero 28 - voted the "Best Pizza in New York" by Citysearch.com readers. We specialize in authentic Neapolitan pizza, baked hot and fast in a brick oven to achieve a not-too-thick, not-to-thin chewy, smoky crust made from a recipe that's been handed down through five generations of… pizzaioli (pizza makers). Our one-of-a-kind dough is then stretched into an oblong shape, topped with the freshest ingredients available and sold al metro "by the meter" just like you would find in Italy. To further the authentic Neapolitan dining experience, Numero 28 provides a casual, welcoming atmosphere of heavy wooden tables and whirring ceiling fans. Our friendly staff welcomes both neighborhood regulars and visiting strangers like long-time friends. In addition to our pizza, Numero 28 offers classic Italian dishes such as lasagna, rigatoni alla Bolognese, eggplant parmigiana, homemade tiramisu, and an assortment of antipasti.

Numero 28 Pizzeria Napoletana 1st Ave. Ratings and Reviews
Food quite good, and nice wine selection. Only slight downside is that the noise level can be significant depending on where you sit. Not great acoustically. Also, the chairs/benches kind of hard, which discourages lingering. That's probably their intention! They were also having problems with their credit card machine, so we had to fork over a fair amount of cash. Great pizza, though. Best in the area.
I messed up online reservation and hostess graciously was able to seat our party of 5, despite planning for 2! Food was wonderful!! We all enjoyed the live music and delicious salad, pizzas and pasta!! Only thing lacking was a bit of attention to water glasses, but was helpful when asked for more. Overall will return when in area, and recommend for small groups/families!
We really enjoyed our meal at Numero 28. We shared the pere salad, mushroom and truffle pizza and the sausage/pepper pie. I had the sauvignon blanc and my fiancé had an IPA ( I don't remember which one). Our service was attentive and able to answer any questions we had. The food came out quickly and was really fresh. The mushroom truffle pizza in particular was really yummy! We came around 7 on a Saturday (we made a reservation but it wasn't necessary) and there were about 6-7 other tables full. We'll come back to try some more of the menu!
Excellent pizza; but I think this is one of the most understaffed restaurants I've been to in a long time. Only two waitstaff for the whole space, who were completely overwhelmed. Took us forever to get the menus/ order drinks/ order food/ order more drinks/ had to actively ask several times to get our water refilled/ get the check...I don't blame the waitstaff, they were friendly and did their best. But the management is being really irresponsible and careless by not hiring an adequate number of people.
Is the pizza still worth it? It is great pizza. But I'll probably stay away for a while.
We made a reservation for Christmas Eve to meet friends visiting from Florida. The restaurant was almost empty. We had been to Numero 28 previously and thought the pizza was excellent. Unfortunately this time was a disaster. All pizzas were extremely undercooked and flavorless. The salad was limp and lifeless. Annoyingly, the pizzas arrived at varying times. Our appetizer (bruschetta) was NOT what we had ordered and the last item to arrive at the table. (The kids left hungry!) We decided not to complain because it was Christmas Eve and the staff was pleasant. We might try it again. Here's hoping it's was just one bad night.
Service follows the fashion that we should all eat in thirty seconds, so plates are cleared as soon as humanly possible. In one case, the plate was pulled out from under the diner while he was picking up the last piece of pizza. And that was a pizza that was so heavily sauced that the crust was soggy to the point of nearly non-existence.
All of this would be par for a standard New York City quasi-Italian pizzeria were it not for the prices, which are far too high for such treatment and quality.
Food was very good - we got the mixed greens salad, pasta bolognese, and a large pizza, which was more than enough food for 4 people.
Issue was service/ambiance. We had an unsteady table that never got fixed (we asked multiple times, and actually got attitude in response). The place was really hot as they sat us right by the oven. And in general, should have been in and out much faster than we were given slow service (and overall bad attitude by the wait staff).
It's the 3 rd time in 2 months we came to Numero 28 UES and it keeps gettting worse everytime. Yesterday was to the point we decided we won't be coming back. Service was beyond appaling: waited 10 minutes to be seated when we had a reservation and plenty of empty tables (waiting for that long with a hungry toddler was not fun at all), waitress kept forgetting to bring our order (beverages and dessert), beer was at room temperature, pizza came cold and the crust was not to numero 28 brick oven standards, coffee was undrinkable with so much lots coffee grinds that we had to return. Music too loud making conversation difficult. It was painful to pay such an expensive bill having such a poor service/food/experience.
My wife and I had salads and shared a 14" pizza there. The salads were wonderful and the pizza was delicious. The restaurant is not large and it is a bit noisy. But the food is outstanding, especially for a neighborhood place. They serve quite a few other Italian dishes in addition to the pizza and we saw other diners ordering (and finishing) those other dishes. We will go back there.
I can't see how you can go wrong when going to Pizzeria 28.
Pizza is amazing, fine crust and just the exact amount of toppings.
All servers have that italian vibe, always joyful and happy to serve. AND they will do the unthinkable to find you a place outdoors (even though it's always full) if that's what you're looking for.
Go, try it, and find yourself going back soon.
