Not Your Average Joe's Westborough Ratings and Reviews
Once again NYAJ's provides a nice meal at a reasonable price. I'm consistently pleased with the variety of the menu, the prices and the good service. I also appreciate that the make the effort to update the menu seasonally, rather than just sticking with the same old. In addition, the wine list covers a wide price range, so there's something for everyone. All in all, I always feel like a get my money's worth when I dine there!
We were seated 15 minutes later than our 7:30 reservation time. The server was very nice but kept us waiting to place a drink/app order. Nachos were the smallest portion I’ve ever seen, but tasty. Our meals took so long to arrive that my daughter didn’t have time to eat her dinner before she had to leave for her soccer game. My husband’s burger was undercooked. The server did give us a gift card to apologize for the wait which was nice. We’ve been to the Acton restaurant and have had great experiences.
We were seated on time. The beer and wine lists were good. We were a party of 5. 2 of us had the pork chop which was undercooked. It was sent back and instead of sending new ones, the same pieces came out , delivered by the manager, and were completely dried out. I had the mustard chicken which was flavorless and greasy. The steak tips were good as was the pizza.
We went with a birthday coupon. I had herb crusted haddock. It was perfect. The bread to start, has my daughter at college coming home on the weekends. A sangria, was perfect. My date had a salad and was happy (diet). We skipped dessert, but left with Happy Birthday wishes from at least 3 staff members that went out of their way. Thank you NYAJ!
The turnaround time from when we ordered to when we received our food was unacceptable. This is the second time in 3 visits we had this problem. Our waitress was good as it wasn't her fault the kitchen was so slow (it wasn't that crowded). Won't be in a hurry to go back. One other note, the staff shouldn't be so quick to say "your food should be up in a minute" when they probably do not have any facts to support the statement if the food comes out 15 minutes later.
Stopped in to celebrate my wife's Birthday. Great food and great atmosphere. Nice clean restaurant. One of the cleanest NYAJ's we've visited. Service provided by Leira was awesome. Will definitely return for dinners out and special occasions. Thanks for the special memory.
My husband and I enjoy dining at Not Your Average Joe's in Westborough. We always request Marlo as our server. She is extremely good at her job and always goes above and beyond to make us feel special. The menu offers many choices including seasonal offerings. The food is always high quality and very consistent. We're already looking forward to going back to NYAJ's.
I made reservations through OpenTable for dinner on a Saturday night, and it was a good thing because the place was packed. The bad thing was, we requested a high-top table (i.e. in the bar) and there were no reserved tables in the bar for us. We had the option of waiting but we took a table in the main dining room - squeezed into a table for 2 between two large groups. The table barely fit our 2 plates, not to mention wine glasses, wine bottle, salt & pepper shakers, etc. I worried that something would get knocked off but luckily that never happened.
I had a cup of tomato basil soup (excellent), and the marinated steak tips with crunchy potatoes and grilled asparagus. It was good but I'd say "average". I couldn't really taste the marinade on the meat. The potatoes were very good with a garlic aioli drizzled on, though they weren't crunchy at all. We split a dessert from the seasonal menu: hot apple-stuffed cinnamon sticks, which were large (we got 3) and delicious.
The wine list was decent, and the inexpensive Banfi Centine Super Tuscan was very good.
Service was excellent (our waitress Alexandria was delightful), although during our meal I got an email from OpenTable saying we never showed up for our reservation. So I rate the reservation system at Not Your Average Joe's via OpenTable a D- since it was totally screwed up.
There was one awkward moment when the manager stopped by our table and proceeded to fix/play with my husband's shirt collar. He said the collar was folded under and that I should have noticed and fixed it. Being pawed by the manager during dinner wasn't appreciated.
It was a very quiet night at this location which was great but my food came out cold. When they brought it back they warmed it up to barely room temperature. The plate was burning hot but the food was not. They were gracious enough to take it off the bill. Also, the first round of bread was cold and hard as a rock, luckily the second basket was fresh and warm.
We used to love NYAJ's and have eaten there many times. The food was good and the prices reasonable. However, we've noticed the prices have gone up considerably, so no longer a great value. That would be OK, but recent visits to NYAJ's in Westborough have been disappointing. The food just hasn't been up to par.
In our recent visit, even though the place was not busy, the food came out cold - both of our entrees. The beef in the sauerbraten was pretty tough and the mashed potatoes lumpy. In addition, they delivered the tomato soup starter very late - only two minutes before the entrees came - when it should have been brought out immediately after ordering. In view of the recent disappointments (there were others previously) and inconsistent food preparation, we are likely to look for other options.
Generally, management will offer a refund or the option to select a different dish, which they did in this case. However, when visiting a restaurant you want the meal you ordered prepared properly the first time. The goal is get it right. We're not interested in playing roulette with our food selections.
I'm a frequent customer and this by far was the worst restaurant visit in my entire life! I don't know what happened to NYAJ!!!! The service was awful, the bread stale, the ahi tuna I ordered was lamentable: the tuna was not fresh (taste was fishy), the mashed potato was bitter and asparagus was as salty as it could be!!! What is going on? I was in a party of 4, and the other members of my family also said their food was way below par... Did you guys changed the management? It was a real disappointment.
We had been there unmanly other occasions, including other busy Saturday evenings. The restaurant was very busy and louder than I would prefer. The waiter was very nice. The food was average. I had an issue with my salad in which they did take $5 off due to inconsistent goat cheese balls in which the salad is named for. One was not warmed up, one was burnt on one side and the other was good. We felt that the kitchen staff was either poorly staffed or that there was no one to monitor the quality at the pass. I would think that it is never acceptable to put poorly prepared food out unless they are in a rush just to clear tickets. It was definitely not a relaxing dinner. We did not feel like we could just sit and have good conversation. We had a reservation at 6pm and we were home close to 8pm and we live 30 minutes from the restaurant. Not Your Average Joe's seems average based on this last experience.
I've passed by this place countless times and never had a strong desire to check it out... but when it was suggested to me last night I thought I'd give it a try... and I'm glad I did. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The service was very good and we liked what we ordered.
I enjoyed my mustard chicken and my brother had the wedge steak (steak served with a wedge salad). The cheesecake was also nice. Loved our margaritas.
Prices are fair and the atmosphere is nice. When we first arrived, families with young ones were finishing up so it was a bit noisy for a while. Keep that in mind... this is not a place where you can expect a relaxing meal, Excellent for it's price point. I'll be back and will order the chicken again.
I have dined here before and enjoyed the restaurant. However, this past weekend, the food was a major disappointment. I won't be hurrying back especially as it was the place I chose to use my earned Open Table $50 gift card. I really wished I had gone to another establishment. I'll provide some details: the bread was stale; the mashed potatoes were dry; the rice pilaf had little taste. We had a great server who was attentive to our requests which is always a great plus.
We've been going here since it opened and usually had a fine meal and service. If the meal wasn't good, or overly salty they would comp it. So our server must have been new, we ordered a bottle of wine. He delivers it and asks if we like to order. No, we said, we'll enjoy a glass and then order. It was a long time before that happened, he said to us, you should have ordered when I first asked you, cuz I knew we were going to get busy. Excuse me? It's my fault you took so long? then it took a long time to get our food. We both ordered from the special seasonal menu, I had fried chicken and my husband meatloaf. Another waiter brought our meals, 2 fried chicken. We told him of the mistake and we quickly got the correct meal. Unfortunately, both were not hot, and my husband's mashed potatoes were inedible, gummy and cold. He loves mashed cuz I never make them. So we now waited for our bill to come, we knew it would take a while. Not a big deal, but when things go south they continue to do so. We were charged for 2 fried chickens. Had to wait, again for a corrected bill.Won't be back.
The children's pizza seemed undersauced and cooked in a hurry (doughy in the middle, crispy on the edges) and the children's pasta tasted like it had red pepper in the sauce. The pasta also came out late because our waiter got the order wrong. He then questioned us when we told him so. Not good.
The scallop plate was fine, but presentation was severely lacking. It looked like what I would serve up to my friends or family, not like something I would get from a restaurant. Lobster roll was fine but could have used a bit more creaminess to my liking.
All in all, not a good night out with the family and I probably won't be back again soon.
We've been to NYAJ's many many times but this was one of our best visits because of our server Cory K. Cory was very attentive but not overbearing, engaging in light conversation while ensuring our meals were to our liking. Joes recently moved a couple of our favorites from the dinner menu to the lunch menu, but Cory assured us we could order them for dinner. Food was tasty, service was superb!
Slow night at Joe's, sat at bar. Ordered Fried Chicken dinner - advertised as cooked to crisp perfection - not so. Soggy after wing was eaten and one last small piece was way overcooked (like from a previous order and cooked again). Ordered butter with bread - never came. Bartender was extremely social - to a fault, not paying attention to details.
We came in for the lobster roll and it was not even close to what was pictured in the e-mail promo. It was very small and looked like leftovers. The waiter had told us they were running low (it was only 7 pm) and that certainly showed. Two people in our party actually got sick afterwards from the dinner.
I always enjoyed my eating experiences at Average Joes but this one was disappointing. The special margaritas (4) had to be returned as they were not made properly. We then ordered appetizers and entrees. They all came at once. We had to send back the entrees as there was not room on the table and we didn't want to eat everything in the first 10 minutes. They took the entrees back and put them under the heat lamps. I had ordered the mussels as my entree and the Waldorf salad as my appetizer but since they sent the mussels out with everything else I kept them Not wanting warmed over mussels. When they brought the other entrees back the fish sandwich was not eatable and the pizza was barely warm. The server immediately told us they would take the sandwich off the menu which tells me they knew it was not good so should actually have been redone.
The whole experience was not what I have had in the past so was VERY disappointed.
