Food was better than expected. Atmosphere was nice. Can’t wait to go back and try new dishes.
Victoria was our server and she was great! My boys loved her enough to leave her a hand written note
Typical Friday night outing at a local restaurant
We were celebrating my daughter’s 17th birthday and Valerie was our server. She was friendly and took really good cares of us, checking regularly to see how we were doing and if we needed anything. We were most impressed with how she handled our dessert order. After saying my daughter’s dessert was on the house, she provided options based on my daughter’s nut allergy and checked with the chef. Since my daughter's choices presented some risk of contamination, they did not want to take chances. Therefore, Valerie brought us a beautiful plate of assorted fresh fruits (not on menu) made just for my daughter who loves fruits! The fruit was delicious and we were most touched with the care and attention my daughter received. So glad we chose this restaurant to celebrate her birthday!
We had a larger group & a reservation and they seated us right Away, but the seating for parties 5 and larger are at tables that run down the middle of the restaurant which didn’t help with noise volume& we were the last table which meant we were closest to the kitchen where noise volume was louder and it was very busy with staff coming and going. Our waiter was very nice and seemed to be on top of things but it took a very long time to get our apps, then dinner, & even desserts. When we finally got our food the waiter did apologize and said there had been some issues with the kitchen (I might have been nice to be told that while we were wondering where our food was). I am not sure if our waiter was covering too many tables or not but we had to hunt her down a few times for items such as salt and pepper. One our meals came with Uber well done steak that was supposed to be med. to med rare. Also the sautéed spinach was very salty. As for the deserts everyone seemed to be pleased with the exception of sticky toffee pudding which was room temp to slightly warmed (not very warm to hot) the temp was such that the ice cream on top didn’t melt.
We have been to this restaurant many times but lately with each subsequent visit the, experience /food has gone down . We came tonite for my daughter birthday dinner and she had always really looked forward to going to Not Your Average Joes, but after this visit she may change her mind for next year
Love the hot gluten free bread! Love the gluten free menu!
Been to many locations, this restaurant never disappoints!!
I have gone several times and have always enjoyed this restaurant.
The meal was the best! Everyone was so nice from the time I walked in till when I left the restaurant. I will go back here the next time I am in Gaithersburg for work.
We went to celebrate my son's 24th birthday. Our reservation was for 7pm. We were seated in a booth for 4 immediately. Unfortunately, there were 2 very large parties in attendance, one of which was right next to our table. There was hardly any space between our booth and them, and there was a constant traffic jam beside our table between wait staff trying to deliver meals, people trying to get to their tables, and the people at the large party table trying to get comfortable. This went on throughout our meal. Extremely annoying.
As for the food, the pizza that my son and his girlfriend decided to split, was declared as good. My husband ordered the jumbalaya which looked very starchy, and glutenous, was deemed to be fair. I ordered chicken parmesan. The chicken was overbreaded, over-cooked, and tasteless. Very disappointing.
Our service was good considering how terribly crowded it was. We will not return, however, because the food just wasn't that good.
Excellent waitress. Very friendly. Good recommendations.
Food is normally very good. This time, “medium” hamburger was over-cooked on outside.
Do you or your child have food allergies? While they make quite the spectacle as soon as you sit about if the chef should be aware of any allergies they are actually completely unprepared if god forbid you say yes. First your waiter will be annoyed, then the “chef” or kitchen will be perpetually confused over basic questions like does this have any eggs in it? We ordered food only to be told 20 minutes later “oh, sorry that’s not gonna work...we COULD do this other thing but it’ll take a long time and it’s a little complicated”... 90% of restaurants have options for dairy and egg allergies, especially for children, this place does not.
Great local spot with huge selection, including gluten-free and dinner salad menu. Nicole, our server, is extraordinary. We return because of her.
When we first arrived, we were greeted quickly and are table was waiting for us. We sat near the front door were everybody was waiting to be seated, so the noise level was loud. We went with another couple and we had trouble hearing each other.
The server was amazing, she was very attentive and knew the menu well. My wife had the sirloin tips, which were tender and full of flavor. I had the BBQ meatloaf, which was a little small, but still tasty. My friends had a crusted chicken dish and they said they would get it again.
Since the food and service was good, I would give this place another try. Just asked to be seated elsewhere and away from the front door.
We had a great dinner! Thanks to Georgia Greg for being so warm and engaging (enjoy the Cherry Blossoms) and also for coordinating a significant food allergy with the chef. We were able to avoid garlic or find a close substitute, and they even checked with us about cross contamination. We will be back!
Good service and food, nice ambiance, convenient location with ample free parking. Good variety on the menu.
Outstanding bread and dipping sauce... really unmatched!
Good meal. Service was not on par for NYAJ's. Disappointed that when the server knew it was my wife's birthday they didn't offer a small desert for her so we could sing happy birthday. He wanted us to BUY deserts...:(
Had the Wedge salad with salmon - good, not great. My wife had a salad with steak on the side. The steak was very chewy and needed some spice. Server was great and my drink was excellent, not measured. Cool decor and seemed like a fun place for locals.
We had a nice meal with excellent service from Marcus.
The only issue was that having made a reservation, there was still a 20 minute wait for a table.
Went there on Valentine's Day so they were busy. I had reservations & were seated pretty close to schedule. Two guest were late but we were seated at our table anyway & could order. Had to switch tables after being served drinks & bread. Our waitress was very accommodating as we went in a different section. Each of us received a little snack gift all wrapped up & had red ribbon. Such a nice touch for such a busy evening. Could see the effort stuff made on Valentine's Day. Drinks & food very good.
Very pleasant, especially considering it was a hectic Valentine's Day! Staff was so friendly and the good was delicious!
Food was not good but service was great
Reserved an indoor table and was walked to an outdoor table manager was not able to manage the reservations. Service was super slow.
Attempted to give this restaraunt a second chance due to a bad 1st experience at a different location. 0/2
We go to NYAJ a lot. We LOVE the Caribbean Buffalo Chicken Tenders so my husband decided to get the buffalo chicken pizza... But it was not good. They were kind enough to take it off our bill. We've had several good experiences here and a few not-so-good ones. Service is sometimes very slow with a lot of mix ups, but we still keep going back because we enjoy most of the food.
Despite reservations, had to wait 15 minutes at 6pm for our table. Took 30 minutes from ordering dinner to getting our food -- and the Valentine cocktail wasn't served until after dinner (so we weren't charged--but still...!!) Lovely server, but took too long for our food and table
Good food and great service. Will definitely meet up with friends again at this restaurant
Service was great - we had a friendly and competent server. However their signature dish of enchiladas was very bland, had little protein (mainly rice). This dish used to be great - and now I would not order it again. This was a disappointment.
This restaurant has exceptional salads and entrees. They make everything from scratch, and everything tastes delicious. I highly recommend the Mona Lisa Salad.
Great food and service!
My friend wanted to try the spaghetti squash bolognese dish she’d heard so much about. If you have movie or time-specific plans after dinner, factor in the wait. The restaurant was quite busy so we weren’t seated until about 20 minutes past our time. That wasn’t a big deal for us, though, as the waiting area was comfortable. The fresh bread with olive oil and Parmesan was addictive. That was a good thing because we got left behind for a bit because the waitress had a large table of 10+. She was apologetic and kind, but still not as attentive as we would have hoped (as in, forgot to take our entree order after we received our appetizers.)
Speaking of appetizers, don’t miss the nachos! If you’re looking for average California-style nachos, these aren’t the ones. Fresh bites of guacamole and cumin-spiced sour cream covered light, crunchy tortilla chips that were dripping with cheese. They’re worth a trip back for Happy Hour.
I wouldn’t judge the restaurant on that evening’s experience. In general, it seems like a wonderful restaurant with friendly servers. Be sure to factor in the popularity and add a few minutes to your designated dining time. Enjoy!
Fun, enjoyable food, good every time.
Daniel was a great waiter and the food was great.
We were one of a few groups of dad's that took their daughters to dinner prior to the Brownies annual Father-Daughter Dance. This is our fourth year picking Not Your Average Joe's and we keep picking Joe's (and will again next year) because it is a great place for dads and daughters alike. The kids loved their meals, as did the dad's - plenty of clean plates.
The staff was AWESOME - really went out of their way to make the evening special for the girls (and dads).
First, there is an entire gluten free menu, which is amazing and rare! The food gets an extra star just for that. However, the gluten free bread starter was noticeably less abundant than the gluten bread starter, which sat on the edge of the table with our discarded appetizer plates for a good 20-30 minutes before wait staff cleared them. Our server was nice, but the place was surprisingly empty for a Friday night and service was still super slow. I suspect they cut some wait staff early.
I ordered a gluten free chicken sandwich, and my SO ordered a gluten free burger, both with a side of sauteed spinach. Burger was fine. Gluten free bread was great. Chicken was dry, and overall the sandwich was uninteresting and bland. The spinach was inedible, nothing but salt. Also, presentation of the food was seriously lacking. House cabernet was decent.
I've been here a few times before, and been happy enough with food & service. This was definitely the worst visit, so maybe they were having an off night.
Food was good
Drinks were yummy
Would love like to come back for happy hour
Food was good, but a bit pricey. Service was terrible. Our server spent a great deal of time speaking with two customers across the restaurant. He eventually sat down in their booth! We waited for a water refill and had to ask another server for boxes!
NYAJ is always a good experience. We had great service, excellent food, and a good time.
