Not Your Average Joe's Gaithersburg Ratings and Reviews
This restaurant has systemic problems. Every time we go we experience some kind of issue. They have perfected the apology and the remedy — an offer to take whatever had a problem off the bill. The manager comes over to apologize and make it right. But it’s a crutch. I would rather they get it right the first time and pay for my meal in full and avoid the manager drive-by remedy. The key is to not make the mistake in the first place. Tonight’s issue: they brought our appetizers at the same time as the main dishes. Not only was it annoying, but there was no room for everything on the table. We were sitting there hungry with no appetizers.
NYAJ is one of my favorite places to eat. Everything is great and there are no bad menu items. Service is always great. The thing that bothers me is when the guests and staff drag chairs across the noisy floor, setting my teeth on edge. A stafg member was moving tables and kept dragging chairs for nearly 10 minutes. Both my table mate and I were bothered as were the people at the next table. This particular night was cold and windy, so I wish staff had spent more time keeping the inside door closed because the wind and chill directed straight at those of us at tables rather than those in booths. One man at the table in front of us kept getting up to close the inside door.
I love eating here, but I was a little disappointed last night. The food seem to be more salty than usual. When I booked the reservation on open table, I told them a corner table and how it is my mom's birthday. They gave us a corner table, but did not do anything special for her birthday. The server provided excellence service as he kept refilling our drinks without us asking and split our (my mom and I) meal in the back instead of us doing it on the table. I would still go back, but I'm hoping the saltiness is only for last night and not for another visit.
Food is usually good. We did have two meals out of 6 that had issues this time (one was a steak that was not cooked properly and another was a pasta dish where the noodles were not cooked properly either). The concern I have is that the last few times we've been there the kitchen and bar has been very slow. We ordered a pizza for our 2 year old daughter and it took almost 30 minutes. Last time there was a long delay for her food too. Drinks took about 20 minutes this time for the first round.
Service was good overall though the delays make it much harder for the servers to be efficient and leads to customers getting frustrated as something the servers cannot control. The rating for Service is based on the kitchen/bar, without the food delays we are talking 3-4 stars for the servers
The waitress started with an attitude and this continued when she came back a few times. She was almost non existent. Very hard to find her. I had to track down with another waiter to assist us. Finally had to get the maitre’d to get us checked out. Received a fork only and no knife. Refills were hard to track down. Food not prepared as desired. Usually this is a great place with great service and great food. Amazing how one person who doesn’t care can change this perception.
We enjoyed our dinner very much! Service was excellent and our choice for dinner was great! We had selected one of the Octoberfest meals - our portions were large and served with their delicious freshly baked bread. A really pleasant weekday evening - we’ll certainly be returning for dinner again soon!
Our waitress did an outstanding job! We had a young child and baby in our party. She was particularly attentive to their needs. Food was good except for eggs Benedict which were raw....whites were even runny. Our waitress removed those and substituted French toast which was tasty but very sweet.
I would not recommend the brunch menu but the rest of our food was good. It was a nice birthday celebration for my daughter.
Was not the greatest experience but I believe our waiter was new so I'm trying to be sympathetic.
We first got there and were seated immediately even though we were a little late. We sat outside and our waiter came right away so we ordered cocktails and when they were delivered and then we ordered our appetizer and meal. They put bread on table but no silverware or napkins. Napkins came but we were told silverware was backed up in kitchen, really? Silverware finally showed up then dinner came but no appetizer so sent dinner back and asked for appetizer first. Like I said Wasn't the greatest experience but I'll come back to see if it gets better.
My three siblings and I brought our mother to NYAJ two nights ago to celebrate her being 5 years removed from her last chemotherapy treatment. We had previously dined at NYAJ 5 years ago when she'd at that time just had her last treatment. The staff and management could not have been any kinder and genuine to us. From random staff members approaching our table to inquire and to share their own cancer stories, to management sharing such kind words and asking to take a photo with our family and the entire staff, to our own server giving us dessert for free and a large percentage off of our bill, NYAJ unequivocally made our dining experience all the more celebratory. Each one of us left that evening feeling both blessed for our mother and super special thanks to NYAJ's generosity and hospitality. And, of course, the food was DELICIOUS!
Our first time at this restaurant. The food was really good, and the focaccia bread and dipping oil was especially tasty. They had a nice selection of draft beers. Unfortunately, our waiter was clueless and forgetful. We'll still give it another try, and hope for a more knowledgeable and attentive server. The gluten-free menu was impressive. There was ample parking in the strip mall lot, which was a plus.
One of the worst culinary experiences ever. The scallops were undercooked (raw), the fried chicken was overcooked (tough and dry), the clams were sandy, the fish sandwich was watery (mushy), the broccoli rabe was extremely salty, the crispy potatoes were flabby, and the "warm"
almond encrusted goat cheese was actually frozen! When I told the server I didn't like anything on my plate, he thought I was kidding and never returned until I complained to another server. They did remove the two most objectionable items from the bill, and gave me a free salad (with the frozen goat cheese). The service was adequate, and the patio would have been lovely except for the incessant flies. People really seem to like this restaurant, but I can only assume it's because they don't have taste buds.
In need of a get together with friends and one suggested the Gaithersburg location of Not Your Average Joe's. Upon entering, was greeted by the host, and led to the table where one of my friends was already there...the third trailed behind me. I was surprised at how quiet the restaurant was compared to the Bethesda location. We could actually have a conversation! LOL! Food was satisfying but, I really think the ribs could have been a tad more tender...it was good since I ate it. It was a great place to get together and our server took care of us...was there when needed. There's a nice outside area to sit and chat which was nice.
Outdoor seating was very nice but for the noise of the occasional trucks that passed close to the restaurant. Not a significant problem but did temporarily halt conversations. Service was pleasant and knowledgeable but sort of slow for a period when the restaurant did not seem to be too busy.
We attended a fund raiser for House With A Heart Senior Dog Sanctuary. I had never been there before. All my neighbors attended. They were happy to come to the fund-raiser because they recommended the restaurant. We'll eat there again. Marlon was a good and patient waiter.
