Not Your Average Joe's Acton Ratings and Reviews
We went there because they have great seafood and vegetable tempura and they were out of it . Really ? How hard is it to throw some veggies and shrimp in a batter and oil ? I ordered pork chop with Spanish potatoes instead and it was really good. And of course bread and oil never disappoint. We also had some red sangria and peanut butter thing for dessert , both were great . Still very disappointed about tempura. I was craving it for weeks .
For this night out, the Mr took a repeat performance of the Heritage Pork Chop and liked it even MORE this time around.
As for me, I tried the Steak Wedge, a combination of salad and steak. I asked our server for help in deciding Medium or Medium Rare. Should have gone with Medium, as this was a bit underdone for my taste, but delicious! Loved the salad that came with -- it's big and generous.
Beverages: unsweetened iced tea for him, watermelon lemonade for her. Thumbs up for sure!
Last chance to try the summer menu with special e-mail invite. Mr. B ordered the Heritage Pork Chop -- delicious, perfectly cooked, accompanied by "Spanish potatoes" and a mountain of arugula. Bravo!
Mrs B had the Farmer's Market Flatbread, which came to the table warm and fragrant. Delicious mix of greens -- pesto, green beans, asparagus and broccoli rabe -- with a dollop of ricotta and a sprinkle of pickled red onion. Broccoli rabe had a slightly bitter taste that I didn't remember from the Broccoli Rabe Pesto Cavatelli dish I'd had earlier this spring.
And who wouldn't love that delicious focaccia? Kudos to our server, who was warm and gracious!
Went in to get the lobster roll after seeing a beautiful picture in the ad. So disappointed....not big chunks and a "tail" piece was so small the it must have been from another form of seafood.
The coleslaw had strong flavor of mustard. My husband was underwhelmed.
My mussels were the poorest mussels I have had....and I love mussels. These were almost mealy and the broth added very little.
Overall, we walked out saying it would be a long time before we go there again.
We have been there 4-5 times in the past two months. We like the atmosphere and have always had great service. There were some food problems last time we were there which surprised and disappointed us. This time our food was great and we look forward to going back again.
Decided on dinner out at the last minute and went to Not Your Average Joe's because it was close by.
Farmer's Market Flatbread - fabulous! It looks like a garden on the flatbread. Asparagus, arugula, tomatoes, greenbeans, pickled onion and a dollop of ricotta! DELICIOUS!
Herb-crusted Haddock -- another winner!
Took a chance with reservations at 2:30 on Father's Day. Delighted that the dining room was quiet, and service (thanks to Emily!) was good. The bartender hasn't yet found a way to make my more-lime-less-raspberry rickey in the balance I'd like, but I'll keep trying.
Entrees: The Mr. had steak tips medium rare, and that's the way they came. Bravo! Big enough servings that he could eat only half (took the rest home for dinner). The Mrs had Smokehouse Jambalaya -- delicious -- smoky and spicy, and filled with lots of good things. For myself, I'd like a little more broth (and a spoon to scoop it up with). Could only eat half, so the rest will be tomorrow's lunch.
Too full for dessert, but we plan to come in sometime for JUST dessert....
We had a great meal. Only drawback was that several in our party thought the cocktails were weak. A ten dollar margarita should give the desired effect, IMHO. All of our appetizers and meals were delicious. We also had to order gluten-free items and there were many excellent choices available.
Not Your Average Joe's is increasingly becoming one of my favorite restaurants. From the bread with dip at the beginning to the ever evolving menu they provide a delectable dining experience. Their mojitos are very good but they could be a little stronger. I visit this restaurant, or the other locale near me, fairly regularly and I'll definitely keep coming back.
Food was excellent! We've been coming here for over 5 years. Within the past 12-18 months, we noticed the food wasn't as good -- spotty quality, poor presentation.
After avoiding NYAJ for >6 months, we came back Saturday night for dinner with friends and were pleasantly surprised. Menu has expanded and food quality was excellent.
Hubby and I came back tonight for dinner. Again, excellent food and service. We really enjoyed a flatbread topped with pesto, ricotta and veggies -- called something like farmer's flatbread. He likes the new Simply Grilled salmon. I like the salads.
We normally love NYAJ but this trip was not a good one. Our server, Eliza, was outstanding but our appetizer of Lettuce Wraps were gritty (and someone else apparently had complained about salad earlier that day), and our entrees were not the usual caliber of food. My smashed potatoes were on the cold side and had little taste. I will take responsibility for my meat being overdone since I ordered it med-well, but part of it was beyond well done. My husband got the new pesto pasta which was swimming in sauce (unusual for pesto) , and the pasta was stuck together. The vegetables in it were so large that they needed to be cut which was difficult with the bowl and the sauce. The new menu is heavy into fish and seafood, limiting the menu overall for the non fish eater. Although they do have wonderful pizza, when I go there I am usually planning on eating some kind of entrée. Even the appetizers are heavily into fish and seafood. Disappointing evening.
We eat at Acton NYAJ's often but won't again on a busy special day( Mother's Day). Our waitress was great, even tho' she had been there since 9a.m. However the chicken piccata was definitely not as good as usual (3 of us ordered it)and on mine, no green beans were with it. I feel that at 6pm on that busy day, people were fatigued and thus the less than stellar food. Hopefully when we return on a "regular" occasion, things will be up to the usual standard!
We enjoyed our dinner but I was a bit disappointed that our server didn't get the message that it was my husbands birthday. After reminding her ( surprise gone) she did provide a dessert menu and did not charge us for the dessert. The floors in the Acton location are very slippery! I have fallen before at same location. Why is that??
So glad we returned after 5 months since our last meal there left much to be desired. Ordered the chicken enchiladas and pork shank in maple reduction. Both dishes were exquisite! The porky shank was moist and flavorful and a generous size. The reduction was a great pairing with the pork. The chicken in the enchiladas was locally sourced and very moist with good flavor; it wasn't an afterthought. The fresh roasted corn was an excellent addition as well as the micro cilantro. The creamy tomatillo sauce was good enough to eat with a soup out of a bowl. I asked for a side and our server kindly brought out a generous cup which we devoured. I'm only giving a 4 overall because they ran out of their house Margarita mix at 6:30 pm on Cinco de Mayo. We plan to return more often now.
Our server was Lisa R. She was extremely pleasant and efficient. She quickly joined our table, providing bread and water, offering the nightly specials. It was a happy hour with Sangria and Margarita specials and the bar was lively. We had our drinks and enjoyed chatting with friends. We took a while to order, Lisa checked back frequently, and took our order when we were ready. Our order arrived in a timely fashion, only one glitch of vegetable choice. Lisa quickly responded, returning to the kitchen for additional vegetable of choice. Lisa checked in frequently, filling our waters and refill drinks as needed. We were offered dessert and coffee choices, however did not order additional dessert or coffee. Our experience was very pleasant. I would recommend Lisa as a server and NYAJ's as an option for dinner. PS: I liked the addition of the grilled choices to the menu.
SO! I eat at Joe's probably 3 times a week .... usually for lunch. We keep going back because it is predictable, you know what the food is going to be like, and there are some really good people waiting on tables. I couldn't WAIT to have the New Tuna Nicoise Salad. On Sunday I had it. It was TERRible. The first time it came, it was soaked in the dressing (which I had asked for on the side); I mean drenched. Back it went and came back with it on the side. The tuna was that dark reddish stuff, way too moist and shredded and piled in a heap on the salad. It looked gross and tasted gross AND I wasn't the only one who thought so. They should have used Albacore tuna. Period The End. * They did the right thing, however, and took it off the bill *
This will not keep me away from NYAJ's. I'll definitely go back because basically I like it there ....
and also to see what they've done about the Nicoise salad ;-)
My daughter and I split the quesadillas and then each got a small warm goat cheese salad. Both were very good. We had been here two nights prior as well, and my scallops were amazing (although the portion is small for the price) and her enchiladas were INSANELY good. Our friends loved their chicken piccata and scallops as well. The bread is always delicious and dangerous.....
