Not Your Average Joe's Acton Ratings and Reviews
Thoroughly enjoyed a birthday dinner at NYAJ, as always. Not Your Average Joe's has always been very supportive of the youth center that I run, so we come here often and are never disappointed. The restaurant is a great addition to our local community and always serves great food with quality service. Thursdays and Fridays are busy and can have a bit of a wait at the door, but book your reservations and you're right in. While it may be packed, the noise level is not overwhelming. Their in-house drinks are also amazing.
Not Your Average Joe's Acton location never disappoints me. The food is great, and so is the service. And there's always an interesting selection of entrees. I'm gluten-free, yet there was still a more appetizing selection than some restaurants have in their regular menu! I went in for my free birthday dinner and dessert. I don't know how they do it. I had the Vietnamese Flounder. It was just spicy enough, not hot, and flavorful and delicious. The snap peas were just right - this is important, it is so easy to overcook snap peas and ruin how awesome they are! My son got salmon and he enjoyed his meal as well. We also enjoyed our desserts. Service was excellent as always. This is one of the best restaurants in the area!
My wife and I hit NYAJ approximately 2-3 times a month and never come away disappointed. The servers are always cheerful and accommodating, and the food is fresh and delicious. I love their changing seasonal menu, and the "standard" menu items are amazing and can be made to order any way you want! We bring our 16month old and the servers are great with her as well......We have never been let down by NYAJ - a great place to go!
Ouch, disappointing this time. We brought a friend from out of town for a later-than-usual for us dinner. She ordered lobster flatbread as appetizer (I recommend the rosemary scallops which she also ordered). I got chopped shrimp salad; my DH got Chicken, Farfalle & Mozarella. Lobster Flatbread was disappointing: lots of bread, not much lobster. My chopped shrimp salad had chopped lettuce, peppers, tomato, celery & pickled onion, but where was the shrimp? Did they forget it? Was it chopped into micro bits? Our table was at the back which was very noisy and hard to hear our own conversation. Waitress kept trying to take things off the table in a hurry. Everyone can have an off night; for $80 this should have been a better experience.
We took advantage of the $19.99 pizza & two appetizers special on NHL football days.
Pizza was OK, not great.
For our two appetizers we chose guacamole which was excellent, but we felt the chips needed a little salt; our second choice was Thai Chicken Lettuce wraps which were superb! Little cups of iceberg lettuce filled with nicely seasoned chicken, carrot, mandarin orange slices and some other crunchy yumminess. Recommended highly!
Our server, Jacques, was outstanding! Bravo!
The food is good, though not exciting. An acceptable neighborhood restaurant - not too far to drive, not too expensive, good food. Service is fine, although you get the feeling they've trained the staff to talk to the patrons in a friendly manner at all times - sometimes comes across as slightly insincere. Not every one of the 4 or 5 workers that I pass on the way out need to have a friendly good night for me. All in all, formulaic but serves a purpose. Particularly here in Acton where we do not have much of a selection.
It was birthday and I brought friends with me to celebrate. Having the reservation done online was great -- our table was ready when we got there & we didn't have to wait!
Our waitress was very nice but very busy!
Only disappointment was the restaurant ran out of the Boston Cream Pie Cake for dessert. One of my friends didn't get any avocado at all in the salsa served with the peachy chicken. I had some resh avocado on mine & it just looks like someone forgot to add it before it came out of the kitchen.
We had their summer special which was spice rubbed chicken with peach salsa. It was delicious and we would have it again. We ordered the strawberry shortcake to share for dessert. The biscuit was good but we wished there were a few more strawberries and a little less sauce. Overall a good experience.
the disappearing crab cake. we have eaten at this location several times and always get the crab cakes. it was so small that when it arrived i barely noticed it on the plate. it was also over cooked onone side. waitress took my plate and the bread away and the other gal was still eating. when she asked for the bread back, it came with the olice oil but no plate for her to put it on. service mediocare, food portions reduced.
We chose NYAJ because they have a gluten free menu as one of our friends has Celiac. The food was good but our server was not good at all. The funny thing was that he was training a new server, poor kid. Anyway, I think I would go back one more time, just to make sure it wasn't just a bad day for this server, but we were really disappointed with the way he failed to keep up with drinks and bread, argued with one in our party about her entre, didn't split our checks correctly, and only gave us one (non-functioning) pen to sign our bills.
This was my first time to this restaurant. Food prices were reasonable. I had the salmon with rice which was delicious. My daughter had the grilled scallop kabobs- also very good. My husband had the steak tips- overdone and mediocre. Service- I think we had someone who was new. A few errors here and there. Forgot to bring our only appetizer. When we brought it to his attention, he was very apologetic and immediately put in the order. We had it after our main meal instead of before. Manager also comped the appetizer which was nice of him.
We were there for my daughter's 26th birthday and the waiter was kind enough to ask if she wanted the staff to sing to her. He did not want to embarrass her which was very considerate.
NYAJs is a great restaurant - the food is excellent - and the chefs (and management) are VERY flexible and allow substitutions of many levels. The food is cooked fresh, the presentation and ingredients are both superb. AND the service is terrific, too. Attentive, but not too frequent. We always enjoy our meals there - any season, any day of the week!
We enjoyed a couple of their monthly special dinners, the flank steak sabroso (mexican sauces) and the peach chicken, and the rosemary scallops. The kids meals were very good, the pizza (very large) and the burger, accompanied with a choice of fries, vegetable or fresh fruit (best choice for kids). We also sampled the creme brulee cheesecake and strawberry shortcake, both very big servings to share. Though it was noisy, that was fine since the kids were not bothering anyone else. Our reservation for six got us right in to our table even though they were pretty busy that night. Don't forget to sign up for their birthday gifts.
We took some friends with us to Not Your Average Joe's, there was a wait when we arrived, but it was so nice that I had made a reservation through open table. Our friends were impressed that we were able to sit right down, and we all enjoyed the food and service. My family loves Not Your Average Joe's! There's always something for everyone, including the delicious foccacia bread! Thank you!
We're regulars here, though usually not on a Monday night. Sampled the current summer specials, and the lobster flatbread appetizer (which was really big enough to be an entree along with a side salad) was outstanding. I hope it gets added to the regular menu! Service was great as usual. I've written more lengthy reviews of Joe's in Acton before, so for now I'll just say that this continues to be a favorite (and frequent haunt) of ours.
