Nostrana—literally 'ours' —invokes local. Simple food from honest ingredients. Pure. Regional. Italian.
Opened in 2005, Nostrana is Chef/Owner Cathy Whims' love letter to Italy. This is a restaurant built on relationships: with our amazing farmers and purveyors, our dedicated staff, and of course with you, our guest.

Nostrana Ratings and Reviews
Great food and a very good wine selection. This laid-back spot on the South East side of town is amazing. The service is prompt and attentive without being overbearing and the food is simple, rich, and cooked to perfection. One of my all time favorite Italian food locations.
This was my fourth visit in the last 12 months and not the best experience, but still a favorite place of mine. Since in winter, pretty hard to see the menu's without the natural light streaming in during the lighter months. Had a pizza and two Nostrana salads for four and then the pork roast and flat iron steak. Pork roast was pretty hard/dry and could have used some more sauce on the plate - this really has been the only disappointing entree I have had here. Flat iron steak very tasty and we ordered another one after finishing up the first two entrees. I had asked to speak with Wine steward, but he never made it over as it seemed he had larger tables that kept him occupied. I ended up choosing for myself but would have like some help navigating the Italian wines. Server was very good.
Always a great meal; Meatball Monday particularly fun. Food and drink offer old favorites and new options, with excellent gluten-free choices as well, with knowledgeable servers. Our favorites are the pizza, tuna-white bean salad, soup, roasted cauliflower, and amari flight for dessert.
We have always enjoyed the food here and today was no exception. Unfortunately, my meatball and pasta were almost cold. Everyone else had warm to hot food, so I said nothing. I would also add that for six meatball and pasta the price seemed high. The tomato bisque was wonderful. The sandwich also had six meatballs and cost seven dollars less than the pasta. Seems odd. The desert of cheesecake was exceptional. And finally the salads were typical and great. The service and endless cup of coffee were great. They have excellent wines of which we all enjoyed. While it is all very good, expect to pay up. A lunch for three was $108 plus tip.
This is the second time I’ve been to Nostrana and the food is even more delicious! It did feel like the servers were overwhelmed a bit being a busy Saturday night. The service was fine, nothing notable except that the wine steward/sommelier seems to not enjoy smiling. He almost felt annoyed to be at our table to pour. None of this would deter me from returning because they serve some amazing food! The place can be very noisy during the nights because it is so busy, so not a great option if you like quiet conversation.
Wow. I wish I lived in Portland just so I could go back frequently. Had a lot of fantastic meals in my life but this might contend for the championship. We had wine, cheese course, salad course, mains (all pasta was fab, as was the pork!), then split 3 desserts, and NONE of it was in unremarkable. The vibe is also awesome and cozy. Go here. You won't regret it -- and you definitely need the reservation!
Nostrana was good, but with so many restaurants in Portland - we don't have any particular reason to come back. Salad mista was a simple green salad in a bowl and required us to dress, toss and serve it ourselves. (the table we were seated at was very high and made that difficult without standing-up). Our table had the crab fettuccine and a ragu --- while the pasta itself was perfect on both, the crab fettuccine sauce was very subtle and not well seasoned; and the ragu seemed a bit dry and lacking flavor. We've had better at other venues around town. The service was decent, but a bit detached.
Noisy & crowded...... the highlight of the meal was when I discovered a live fruit fly swimming in my beer. Unfortunately I would not go back..... on a lighter note the pizza was tasty... but I’m afraid I was not overly impressed The server did remove the cost of my beer from the bill but it was a total turn off .... an unfortunate experience
We went for my birthday dinner (10 people total) and had a wonderful time! Everyone was happy with their meals and had no complaints! The cocktails were very tasty as well. The service is top notch and you certainly do not go wanting for anything. The noise level is high (small space, lots of people) so it would not be suitable for a romantic dinner. If you're not going for that, then Nostrana is perfect for any other occasion! Can't wait to go back!
The Nostrana salad is always wonderful, the wine selection just fine. The “sommelier” or whatever she was never brought my guest a taste of teroldego, which she was interested in trying. Finally our server brought it and neither of us liked it, though I know my wine. Irrelevant. My guest
found something she liked, though the wines by the glass are more esoteric than I think appropriate. the rosato from Corsica hit the mark, though. The scallops smoked over cherry wood were overpowered by the smokiness and were an unsuccessful effort. I had a better scallop dish at the Bay House in Lincoln City three nights later.
Our server did an excellent job. The mains were a bit out of sync...
Ten minutes sooner would have been better, though we weren’t in a hurry.
Though I am a longtime Nostrana fan, I was not thoroughly pleased with the meal or the service.
We always love our visits here. The staff is professional, warm, and efficient. The food is perfect every time. Great for a salad & pizza, and also perfect for a few course formal meal. Cocktails & wine list are well thought out & executed perfectly. You won’t regret the visit.
Pros: parking, atmosphere, cheese board, drink selection, staff
Things that might be improved
- 20 min wait despite having a reservation
- undercooked pasta with under seasoned and sauce-less bolognese/ragu
- portion of lasagna was small, top layer with truffles was burnt to a crisp
We were so excited to try Nostrana based on its reviews. We were sad (and hungry at the end!) to be disappointed by the quality and quantity of the food.
Nostrana is our go to restaurant for a delicious Italian meal. Creative menu that has something for every need, great service, knowledgeable servers for food taste and wine parings. For me personally, the best whiskey sours in PDX.
We were there on New Years Eve and the only challenge was the noise level.
Will continue to return for a great dining experience!
Here’s the list of what we had to ask for:
Balsamic for the bread
A spoon to actually use the balsamic
An ice bucket for our $100+ bottle of white
Salt and pepper (granted, high end restaurants often don’t supply this but this is a high end neighborhood spot - drop the pretense)
Wine steward suggested a good wine but then we didn’t see him again until 1.5 hrs later when he tried to refill our glasses with an empty bottle.
And, why does the salad get served with not great red wine vinegar and oil (on the side, no complaint with that) and balsamic is never an offered option? Cost cutting?
Very good food but not great standards re: dining experience overall.
Nostrana is great. The pizzas looked fabulous and our dinners were very good, especially the chicken which had this amazing carmelized onion relish. The wine list is very pricey, but excellent and we did feel a little rushed for having such an extravagant dinner ( maybe due to bar seating) but you really can’t go wrong here for a nice dinner splurge!
We try to eat at Nostrana every time we're in town. It's one of my 5 or 10 favorite restaurants in the US. While the food may have fallen off a notch or two over the years, it is still excellent. The service, ambiance, and creative cocktails make it worth a visit. I would eat here if it were simply a generic red sauce Italian joint. The food is much better than that though. Will definitely be back.
