Nice cross between fine dining and neighborhood favorite. Good service and some innovative choices on the menu.
My husband and I picked this restaurant as part of the celebration of my friend’s birthday. She and her husband accompanied us. The food was good except that my husband’s tomato soup as well as his lamb entrée were both served lukewarm. He did not want to make a fuss and send it back to be reheated. I told our waitress privately after we were seated that we were celebrating my friends birthday. I was literally shocked when we reached the desert portion of our meal and our waitress brought over a wax chicken with tiny lighted candle. We had a discussion at the table about how this was the worst birthday birthday celebration treat that a restaurant had ever come up with— we were expecting a piece of cake or ice cream with 4 spoons and an earnestly said “Happy Birthday.” The wax chicken was small and ugly and we joked about what Elizabeth was going to do with it when she brought it home. We were then shocked once again when the waitress came by and grabbed the wax chicken without any statement. We assumed that the chicken is recycled every time someone has a birthday to celebrate at the restaurant and had a good laugh but it was really a terrible disappointment for a restaurant that’s supposed to be so exceptional.
Was Expecting Better
Rip off. 9 very small...like as big as a small marshmallow. Watery and restless for over $17. Waitress was horrible. Rude and cocky.
The food was outstanding, the service was great. The prices were definitely on the high size (eg $15+ for a glass of wine) and the environment was loud enough that quiet conversation was not on the menu. Not a place many folk can become regulars at but certainly good for special occasions.
Second time at Nostrana and everything was fantastic. Food, service, atmosphere all of it. We share two pasta starters and they were sooo good. Pizza could be the best I have ever had. We will be back!!
Excellent as usual!
Outstanding meal. Already looking forward to the next visit.
Food varied from outstanding (agnolotti)to good(polenta). Biscotti rock hard. Special wines good, not great. Prices high for quantity.
Always excellent food and service!!
Now with a new Enoteca opening up!!!
One of my all time favorite restaurants.
Cathy Whims and her colleagues earn, and deserve, many accolades for their food, service, and overall atmosphere that they create at Nostrana. I just want to add "consistency" to the list of accolades.
My partner and I live in the neighborhood and visit Nostrana quite frequently. The food is superb and the service is absolutely flawless EVERY, SINGLE TIME.
Well done, Chef Whims & Co.! We love you guys!
We have eaten at Nostrana before and were disappointed this time. The service was slow, the waiters seemed uninterested in us, and the wine list had nothing in a reasonable price range. $15 for a glass and $80 for a bottle of wine that is just OK will not get us to go back. Every Italian restaurant should have a reasonably priced house red and white wine. This one doesn’t. While the pizza was good, the pasta was mediocre.
We enjoyed our meal immensely. My husband ordered the rotisserie chicken, infused with the smoky flavor that makes your mouth water when you're walking past the restaurant. I had a special gnocchi made with semolina in a tomato sauce that was rich, creamy, delicious and just enough food for my smaller appetite. Paired with a Insalata mista salad that our very knowledgeable young waitress recommended we share, and a beautiful white wine that complemented our meal and tasted like Spring, we were very satisfied. So much that I sound like a Hallmark card writer in this review!
Always a solid choice! We love this place. Wonderful and authentic dishes.
Continues to be my favorite restaurant in Portland, best happy hour in town!
A friend sent us here, saying she thought it was the best restaurant in Portland. We haven't eaten in many Portland restaurants, but this is certainly one of the best we have ever had the good fortune to dine at. My husband had a yellowtail salad starter and an Idaho trout main dish. The trout was simply prepared, but delicious (husband: "the best I've had in this country"). I had a Caesar salad made with radicchio and a red endive---surprising and delicious. I also had a capellini dish with dungeness crab in a light, creamy lemon sauce, and it was outstanding---fresh pasta, perfectly cooked al dente, just enough sauce (I hate it when pasta is drowning in sauce), and just perfect all around. I was also impressed by their extensive by-the-glass offerings and the wine knowledge our wait person had. She helped me choose the perfect wine for my meal. House-made gelato for me and a tiramisu for the man, a perfect ending to a perfect meal. Place gets very busy --- be sure to make a reservation.
Nostrana is one of our favorite places. The food is delicious with seasonal and local offerings and their Pana Cotta is a must.
Met friends for dinner. Great food! Great service!
Our dinner was delicious, our server was wonderful. We asked her to make selections for our group as we hadn’t been in awhile. She relished the challenge and didn’t disappoint. Fantastic wine list, very personable and seasoned sommelier! Will be back! Highly recommend!
Our server was amazing! The food was excellent bread wine dessert everything was perfect. But be sure you make a reservation and go early.
We arrived right at opening (5pm) for our reservation and were seated right away. By the time we left, 7:00pm, the restaurant was packed with every table busy and many waiting to be seated. Music a bit too loud so the four of us had to talk to each other in raised voices. Staff asked to take away our drinks before we had finished them. Dinners were delicious but the tortellini was minimal for $19. Radicchio salad was good but $12 was too pricey for the plate. Felt as though we were being rushed a bit.
Wonderful everything.. but a bit noisy
Not a very good value. I got the Gnocchi and there wasn't much sauce so it was a bit dry. It was not very filling either for the price. The wine pour seemed short and there wasn't many choices in the lower end. For the price and quantity, I did not think the mandatory 20% tip was warranted. The servers were nice, the food was healthy but not much of a value. I did not find the gnocchi inspired. I would go somewhere else next time.
The service was great😀
Great as always. Looking forward to our next visit...
Nice ambience/vibe. Great service, very attentive wait staff. Food was fresh and tasty! Good for groups, they are also good with kids.
Good food great service
We go to Nostrana very often and most times it’s amazing. Tonight was not. The food was great as usual but the service was awful. Most of the servers there are wonder and check on you throughout the meal. We had to flag her down and ask other servers for service tonight. We love Nostrana so much we are not going to let this affect our return. We hope next time will be as amazing as it normally is.
Everything was wonderful and loved celebrating Rolando's book release!
Just a fabulous dining experience! Top notch food and service. My favorite in Portland for excellent fare and atmosphere. This has been an annual special occasion for many years and never disappoints.
Insalata mista...good, but was caught off guard by the beets in it. When it says "seasonal vegetables" do ask what they are for the evening. 😵😵😵
Vongole bianco...on point for taste.
The crust was a little "done" for me, but that is what you get with brick oven styles
good service and excellent food one other very important point, parking
We absolutely love nostrana! We have been dining there since we moved here. The food is always amazing and the staff is so friendly. Would definitely suggest going here
The food was absolutely delicious! One of the best flat-iron steaks I've ever tried. And the goat cheese stuffed pappardelle was fabulous. My only complaint was that the price for a glass of wine was pretty steep for a less-than-generous pour.
Really good food!! I would recommend making a reservation.
This was our first time here and we had high expectations based on everything we’ve heard about it.
Our first impression entering the room was “WOW - what a great space!”. One large room with an amazing bar, well spaced tables and simple decor.
Pre-dinner cocktails were great - the house Negroni was sublime and the weekly quintessential Negroni offering was a nice change.
Starter consisted of the calamari in’zimino. While a bit small, the flavor was spot on Italian! Tomatoes and fresh herbs and nicely char-grilled bread.
The wife ordered the Goat cheese stuffed pappardelle and was disappointed. The pasta was cooked well and it tasted good, but there was no evidence of a goat cheese “stuffing”. My order was a braised short rib dish and it was fantastic - tender and mouth watering , with a simple yet complex sauce.
Desert consisted of very nice gelato and coffee (which never arrived) and a flight of Amari. After all that we were still hungry (portions are small for classic Italian) and ordered the Luganega pizza with added arugula. This was one of the best pizzas we’ve ever tasted and we wish we’d ordered it earlier.
Overall a very good experience, but we were a bit disappointed with the pasta offerings - we felt there should be more than just 1-2 pasta dishes.
Great food, well executed. They've also got the most interesting charcuterie plate.
We loved everything!!!! Will be back! Good free parking and easy access.
Made reservations and arrived a couple minutes before and was promptly seated. Pizza as always was amazing.
We were looking for a pre-theatre informal dinner for a group of 7 & Nostrana fit the bill perfectly: excellent, professional, timely service, outstanding pizzas, good value, great ambiance. Everyone was happy .
