Nostrana—literally 'ours' —invokes local. Simple food from honest ingredients. Pure. Regional. Italian.
Opened in 2005, Nostrana is Chef/Owner Cathy Whims' love letter to Italy. This is a restaurant built on relationships: with our amazing farmers and purveyors, our dedicated staff, and of course with you, our guest.
We hope to offer something timeless and authentic in a beautiful space, the regional specialties of Italy deeply rooted in the Pacific Northwest. We strive to be better every day.

Nostrana Ratings and Reviews
Friends who were visiting took us to dinner on the suggestion of a (younger) family member.
We were seated promptly, slightly before our reservation even; the food and drinks were good. I am ad, however, that our friends were staying overnight so we could have some time to visit with them. We certainly couldn't in the restaurant, since the noise level was so loud we never were able to have much of a conversation, let alone hear the attentive and very capable servers. I'd only recommend Nostrana to young people or to people fortunate to get a first seating perhaps.
Went for a celebration. We had reservations but came early and were seated quickly. Service was excellent with helpful suggestions from our server. The sommelier gave us helpful advice on the wine selection and brought a sample of orange wine (aromatic, dry and delicious) when we asked questions about the Orange selections on the wine list. The food was all excellent and nicely presented. We stayed late but were not hurried by staff. It was a lovely evening.
I had been to Nostrana once before and wanted to try a second time just to see if it was as good as the first time. It was my partner's birthday so I took him, his boys and significant others and we tried the Salad Nostrana and 45 different pizzas. The food is amazing! We loved it all and our waitress was incredibly competent, sweet and willing to deal with our bit of chaos. I love this place!
Cocktail menu was innovative and our selections were fantastic tasting. The food was great--gnocci that was so light it felt like little pillows of heaven in the mouth! We had a great time, but the noise level is so loud that we had trouble hearing our server as well as each other.
We may have caught them on an "off night," because we had read rave reviews. Service was sporadic. Food was too watery and too cold (when it should have been hot). Music was too loud and not conducive to conversing and dining. The floor crew in front seemed to be doing everything they could to make things work well.
We loved the tuna in the seafood antipasto. We had Scallops for our entree and they were excellent. Our son had the pizza margherita and he thinks it’s the best margherita pizza in Portland although he noticed that the size of the pie was smaller than previously
Nostrana has always been a go-to for dinner. I didn't even know they were open for lunch. What a delightful discovery. Many of the same favorites were on the menu, like the Nostrana salad. This is a perfect place for a business lunch. It is also perfect for any reason you can come up with to relax and indulge yourself.
We started with the Insalata Nostrana. Enjoyed the robust flavor of the dressing paired with the crispness of the radicchio. The Tidbit size of the housemade croutons and the parmigiano reggiano make this salad memorable. It is so simple but the care of the balance and use of the tastiest ingredients carry this salad to levels beyond the best. So the stage is set!! In our Primi, we order the pizza margherita....and it is the best. San Marzano tomatoes and Buffalo Mozzerella makes it delectable. I would write the "italian fingers kiss gesture" to finish the exclamation. Try all the pizze when you get a chance. From the simple to the exotic, the wood fire oven creates the foundation for the devine crust. As if things could not be better, my Sea Scallops were absolutely amazing. The sear was precise, opacity entirely through each morsel, sea salt, and a gentle garnish of chives completed the dish. I noticed hints of citrus but probably just overwhelmed with the entire meal thus far. The saute'ed spinach and chantrelles made for a tasty side. I always marvel at the plating of great restaurants. Everything on my plate was at the right serving temperature. I drank the J. Christopher Pinot Cuvee "Nostrana" for dinner and it was full and drank like a Chianti. Caring about all the little details is exactly why we seek places like Nostrana, Thank you so much Cathy Whims and Team!! Cannot forget the Affogato and Vin Santo for dessert. The vanilla gelato with Spella Espresso was the perfect finish to a wonderful meal. It was my youngest son's birthday and the lasting memory was Tara, our server, asking my son if he made a wish as he blew out the traditional "Nostrana Rooster Candle" for birthday celebrations. In singular, to all the courses, Nostrana does Italian and hospitality to the best. Mille Grazie!!
The food was okay. I expected more from what I've heard about this restaurant. Maybe it's just the food that we ordered. We ordered the funghi verde pizza and their special beef stew dish of the night. I wish the pizza had more flavor, it was just kinda plain and the beef stew dish was too salty for me. The salad they have was exceptionally good and that would be the only thing I'd come back for.
This place has a good vibe - spacious room, busy, festive atmosphere. Great food. Wide range of prices. Romantic dining for two or group round-up works here. Still a fresh and novel experience despite being one of Portland’s older restaurants. Highly recommended.
