Opened in 2005, Nostrana is Chef/Owner Cathy Whims' love letter to Italy. This is a restaurant built on relationships: with our amazing farmers and purveyors, our dedicated staff, and of course with you, our guest.
We hope to offer something timeless and authentic in a beautiful space, the regional specialties of Italy deeply rooted in the Pacific Northwest. We strive to be better every day.

We were pet of the last seating on Valentine’s Day and the service was excellent - didn’t feel rushed at all. Had the Valentine’s Day 3-course prix fixe. Great selection and wine pairings of Italian wines were very interesting. The decor is artistic and the venue with high ceilings and exposed pipes etc beautifully decorated.
I had to wait for almost half an hour when I made the reservation two weeks ago. The steak I ordered was not as good and it was cold
Modest portions, almost was sat at a table for four with a party of six. Could’ve squeezed in but would’ve been tight and uncomfortable. A group of seven ended up at the table we were intended to sit at, should have more large tables for bigger groups!
It was a charmed evening from beginning to end. The people were very special and of course the food was perfect. I just love it there.
Crab Pizza was great, Pasta was ok, ambiance is very nice for special occasions or date nights. Good experience overall.
We celebrated our daughters birthday. T was our server and she was excellent, Friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. The pizza, pasta and trout were cooked to perfection. The butterscotch bidino was the “icing on the cake” for the evening. We will definitely be back!!
We came to Portland to celebrate our one year of marriage and nostrana was highly recommended. We chose to have counter dining. Hostess came and sat us at the bar. There were 3 seats left available up against the wall. My husband did not want to sit staring at a wall so we asked to sit in the other two seats and the left over seat was the wall one. Apparently that was an issue. After getting sat we ordered a pellegrino. The bartender poured both drinks with ice in them. I asked for a cup with no ice for my husband. She picked up my cup and dumped it down the drain and gave me the empty glass. Fast forward, she’s telling us the special. Her wording to be exact was “our fish special is from a few days ago.” Already, that isn’t appealing. She also did not seem to realize anything that accompanied the special. We finally order a glass of wine and food. She never brought us the wine and did not come back to check on us at all. We had to flag down the other bartender to get us wine. Our food came and we ate it. She was clearing up our plates and knocked over my husbands full glass of pellegrino again. So at this point half our bottle of pellegrino has been dumped down the drain. Usually this doesn’t bother me, but she was not apologetic at all about the glass she dumped down the drain and the one she spilled. We finally get the check, I give her my credit card. She puts it in her apron and proceeds to wipe glassware. Not running my card, so we are just sitting there waiting to leave. Finally she comes back over and says she forgot to charge us for the wine. So she gives me another receipt. She charged us for the wrong glass of wine that she never gave us. But that we had to ask from someone else. Overall, the experience was terrible. I spoke to the manager after the meal, and he was apologetic but it seemed like he expected her behavior like that. We are from out of town, and we are also in that same industry. This was probably top 3 in our worst dining experience
After living in this city for ten years, and having the hilarious pleasure of meeting Cathy a time or two, I was so pleased to finally bring a visitor (my mother) into Nostrana for my first time in. Bread was amazing, her steak was perfectly cooked, and we both loved our wine. ((And thanks for having the option to have the delicious radiatore without bacon!!))
My only sadness was that gnocchi were off the menu for the evening, but all the more reason to be back soon!
take care, y'all.
Food was great as always, it felt really cold in there (Not sure why the overhead fans were on, there was a draft the whole evening. Our server was a little short with us.
Food was great. Waitress was ok, but not the friendliest. Service at the bar next door was great.
Always a pleasure to dine at Nostrana. Delicious food and wine - perfect amount of attention from staff.
Service and food were excellent. We were very pleased.
I went with some friends and we had a great time. I am already looking forward to going back soon.
Wait staff was amazing, great advise on options, perfect pace for deriving food and wine bar next store is great place to come early
Wonderful dinner with great service all around. We had the charcuterie, ribeye bisteca, and cheese course with a delightful aglianico wine. All of the servers and sommelier were knowledgeable and provided great service. Keep it up Nostrana!!!
Service was quite slow. It seemed like they were overwhelmed. Too many customers and not enough bartenders nor kitchen staff, it seemed.
I always enjoy evenings at Nostrana! The evenings here never disappoint!
Excellent experience we will definitely return.
I don't know why it has taken me so long to get to Nostrana, but I'm glad I made it there. We went, as a group of 4, on Tuesday night, and it was completely full with people waiting to be seated. I was glad I had made a reservation on Open Table in advance. The first thing I noticed was the blazing wood-fire pizza oven. Second was the soaring wood-beamed vaulted ceiling that gave the effect of dining in a Tuscan barn. It really is a lovely space. Our server was attentive and helpful, and the food was equally as impressive. Did I mention the bread? Oh, the bread!!
Both couples started with the radicchio Caesar salad, which our server told us was a house specialty, and it didn't disappoint. Our friends followed with two of the pizzas which I didn't try, but they looked amazing, and our friends raved about them. My husband had the capellini which I found to be dry and lacking in flavor, but he thought it was ok, not great. On the other hand, my trout was outstanding. Pan-fried to perfection and served with grilled baby kale and a garlicky aoli, it alone was worth going back for. I shared bites with everyone at the table, and they all said that they would order it next time we return, which we most certainly will. A wonderful find that will become a regular haunt!
Wonderful food from sublime ingredients and attentive and informed service. We shared the giant ribeye--oh my, it was so good. The lemon/anchovy pasta was wonderful. Loved the arugula caesar salad as well. Good advice on wine. I love this place because it is so focused on the excellent food and the ambience is fairly simple but is also well thought out so as to make it a very casual, non-stuffy experience.
Food and service always excellent. But it's pricey.
Loved the orange wine. Made a reservation for 9. Waited 20 min and was given a free cheese plate for the wait. Which was amazing. Tried the octopus and loved it. Great service!
I brought my husband for his 50th birthday after a friend recommended the ribeye. The drinks were good and the food was even better! The staff was friendly and on top of things regardless of the place being packed!
From first to last everything was perfect. The food, the wine, the service all were first rate.
We always come to Nostrana for our birthdays. There is something so special and comforting about having dinner at Nostrana.
Love this place! It’s amazing every time.
I took a close friend there to celebrate her birthday and she was so delighted with the food, service, ambiance and the special candle commemorating her birthday along with the outstanding crisp for dessert! The greeter, wait staff and servers were friendly, efficient, knowledgeable. I am happy that dining in the winter months at Nostrana has it's own charm and also, look forward to the summer months out on the patio.
We are frequent diners at Nostrana and it is always excellent! We have hit gnocchi Thursday twice now and the gnocchi all romana is to die for. The quality of food and drink and the excellent service keeps us coming back.
Probably close to the 100th time we’ve eaten there. Never disappoints!
We enjoyed our experience with the exception that we had perimeter seating and were so cold that we had to leave our coats on. There were no perimeter heating units, radiators or diffusers. The food was great, but there were were no affordable wine options.
Overpriced for lunch buns on chicken meatballs were burned
Very little salad for $3
Just wonderful! The Insalata Nostrana is amazing! As well as everything else we had. Excellent wine list as well.
First of all, we sat tucked away in the corner of the bar. My son and I had a late night dinner after work. 10pm to be exact. Our bartender and server (Ross) made us feel like brothers in a family!! La familia!!nostra familia!! Have you ever experienced a situation that was”just right!”?? He was attentive, talkative, relatable, all in the right way!! Nuanced?!!everyone wants that experience while dining. It is like a garnish, elegant yet appropriate. So, obviously our server did amazing. The pizza is the best!! Something about the crust, the smokiness of the wood oven, the slight char of the crust bottom!! In pasta terms, al dents!! We have tried them all, artisan, gourmet, fast, whatever...and I told my son, at this age, a person should be allowed to have a favorite (mi piace). Let’s never go backwards. When my “vongole bianco” came to the table, I noticed the calcification of the clam shells and knew that they were toasted in the wood oven at high heat....the only way to get tender cooked clams in the shell. I laughed inside for a moment thinking, “these guys are amazing, how did they stuff parsley in those little clams so that when they got to the table they were garnished?” The little details!! Of course I had a glass of the J Christopher Pinot with dinner and ended the night with a dopio expresso and a scope of rum raisin gelato. Buono!! Mille Grazie Familia Nostrana!!
Everything was beyond delightful. Thank you for the wonderful service and incredible food!!
Delicious plates. We split every dish 4ways and really enjoyed the atmosphere, food and service. Will come again when back in Portland.
Nostrana has never disappointed me. The food is very good for lunch or dinner. We always order the salad and pizza. Pasta dish are also very good. The Nostrana Pinot Noir is one of the best wines ever. Kudos to Nostrana for offering free lunches to federal workers who are not collecting pay checks!
This is my daughter’s favorite restaurant for special events. As usual, everything was wonderful. Food, service, ambiance. We always enjoy our trips to Nostrana.
Always great food and great service. My favorite place in Portland!
We had a wonderful dinner! Also would like to thank the hostess for still seating me after I was a few minutes late on my reservation! I am so happy this restaurant always seems to impress us and make us feel at home every time. Incredible food, great variety, and I was extra excited to try their cocktail menu this time! Yum to everything!
