North Star American Bistro-Shorewood Ratings and Reviews
The 3 people who ordered the steak on mashed potatoes all had very tough pieces of meat (couldn't chew).the salads were ok.the premeal bread was not up to your standards of last year.In fact the entire meal was not up to our last years experience.
I was celebrating my birthday w/ my children & their wives & was embarrassed w/ the food.

Took my nephew to North Star Bistro before he went back to school. Food was great, the service was good even though we had to ask for bread. I had a martini made with an allspice syrup. It was excellent!
North Star Bistro makes the best short ribs in town. It's really a great meal.
My sister and a mutual friend went to North Star on a bitter cold Wednesday night and were immediately greeted warmly and led to a delightful table. Our enthusiastic server made us feel at ease. The menu was supplemented by the soup of the day and a special. Two of us tried the soup of the day, a mushroom soup, rich and flavorful. My sister had a cheeseburger, and our friend and I tried the special, a mushroom risotto with scallops. Delicious and perfect on such a cold night. The glass of tempranillo I had was a good accompaniment to the robust mushroom flavor. All in all, a nice evening.
I am a repeat customer who lives in Florida 6 months of the year, and live 100 miles from Shorewood the other 6 months. My wife and I get to Milwaukee several times and always enjoy this restaurant. Only complaint is I always leave a little hungry, and don’t feel like popping for desert and all those calories. Portions could be bigger or throw in a side salad.
First time for brunch. we have been there before for dinner and always enjoyed it. The service was erratic. Our waiter was attentive at first but it was a long time between our beverage order and ordering our entrees. Eventually we had to ask for him. The food when it came was good. My gravlax on potato pancake version of eggs benedict was very tasty. The others in our group of 4 enjoyed their meals as well.
We had a very good dinner the six of us. Our server Elle was very good and took care of us. WE had a little bit of everything from the menu, Salmon looked great, Whitefish - two different entrees- one was the special and the other off of the standard menu, both were really good, Crab cake salad was also enjoyed. We had a birtheday at our table and when we started to sing Happy Birthday the whole restaurant joined in and 5 minutes later another table had a birthday and 5 minutes after that so did another table. The whole restaurant was into it. A lot of fun and always enjoy North Star American Bistro.
North Star Bistro is one of our favorite neighborhood restaurants. The food and service are always good. The menu features many dishes that are unique to this restaurant. It's noise
level is high and lighting bright so don't expect a romantic dinner for two there.
Always a treat to go to Northstar. We go there once a month or so, usually for a special dinner with friends, when you want good food, excellent service, and a relatively quiet place for conversation and catching up. I've tried just about everything on the menu, from seafood to vegetarian to carnivore, it's all good. Good wine list. It's a bit pricey or we would go there more often.
I took two friends to NORTH STAR the other night and we had a wonderful time. It was not a busy night, so it was great for conversation. I love sitting in a booth - they are roomy and comfy. Our waiter, Henry, was excellent. He was able to talk about local brews and was very familiar with the menu and he was very attentive, without being intrusive. The food was really good and we split a dessert - a flourless chocolate cake that was great!
I think my friends loved their salads and dessert. My food was great except the steak was a little tough. It was a little hard to converse because there were many large tables with many little children. But people were obviously loving it and having a very good time. Our waitress was excellent.
The food was ok... if I were only paying for the convenience of not having to cook for myself. But they charge you much more that just a convenience surcharge. Thus, I can't justify the cost per plate. Or cost per drink for that matter.
They definitely have a very laissez-faire approach to serving. I suppose on a date or something where I have copious amounts of time to fritter away getting to know someone, I might have felt like this wasn't such a bad thing. But when you're trying to have a normally paced dinner, long enough to enjoy without being too long, it fails. Miserably.
At the price I would be quick to recommend numerous other restaurants before succumbing to suggesting this one. If they drop their price per plate by $4-5, then I might take another stab. Otherwise, my suggestion stands: go somewhere else.
Sat outside on a beautiful evening. The waiter was slow to take my drink order. 15 minutes later I received my glass of wine, 10 more minutes I received my ice tea. I was traveling on business in a party of one. The patio was not full. The food was good but the service was not
The decor was fun - and they were able to accommodate three LARGE groups at the same time without it seeming over crowded or understaffed. The staff was friendly, personable and professional. The food was pretty and looked upscale. It was served with the perfect timing between the appetizer and the main course and piping hot! My only caveat is that the food was only so-so as it wasn't seasoned. The tuna just didn't have that "melt-in-your-mouth" quality although it was cooked to perfection. The saffron risotto was bland. The eggplant appetizer had three very good sauces but the actual eggplant was bland. The salmon was the best entree as it had a nice glaze. The potatoes and spinach served with it, however, lacked any kind of seasoning. We will be back though as the service, atmosphere and prices were very good. Plus, they were kind enough to greet us with champagne to help us celebrate our anniversary and accommodated our seating arrangements as requested in our reservation.
Celebrated our children's graduations with Sunday brunch. It's just ordering off the menu, no buffet, but the selection is great! Everything was delicious. You can order Bloody Mary's made by the bartender or make your own with all of the fixings at the Bloody Mary Bar! They were delicious! The staff was very friendly and accommodating as we added 2 people to our group at the last minute.
Group of six for a graduation party. We were seated immediately and could tell they were used to honoring the Open Table reservations. It was a busy Saturday night. The wait staff were excellently; they were unobtrusive but always saw to needs.
Great food - we had a number of dishes including the short ribs, ravioli with scallops, and a couple steak options. We said to each other that we should have had photos for a review, but they looked so appealing that we ate instead of taking pics.
