North River is a contemporary restaurant in New York City that serves up modern American cuisine with an emphasis on fresh, local ingredients. The menu includes a variety of starters and entrees that feature locally sourced poultry, meat, and dairy. You’ll find numerous options for any taste, such as cauliflower salad, grilled Asian greens or a roasted chicken breast; there’s something for everyone at North River.
North River is in the heart of New York’s East Village, and offers diners a casual but sophisticated atmosphere and family style meals where friends and family can share numerous dishes that represent the best local produce and farm fresh meat.
We had an incredible dinner complete with the must-have pork belly donut and delicious lemon cake. You can't go wrong with anything on their menu and the staff is friendly and genuine. Great decor & delicious cocktails - my favorite E Village spot.
I am so impressed with North River! We had originally made a large reservation (party of 8) for 1:15 p.m., but due to some confusion, we needed to move the reservation up to 11 a.m. The restaurant was very accommodating and helpful. Everyone was pleased with their orders and the coffee was delicious. I would highly recommend North River. I am hoping to find a reason to work with them on an event so we can check out their private space and pre fix menu. Happy dining!
Absolutely loved this place for brunch. The service is impeccable, the food is very creative, and they take reservations! Would come again.
Fantastic restaurant. We had the fried chicken nuggets app, which you can't go wrong with.
I'll be back for the food and service.
I thought the food was great, and the interior of the restaurant was very cute. I will say that the service was extrodinarily slow. It took the server 20 minutes to come over and take drink orders. After putting the order in, it took another 15 mins to get our drinks, though they were expertly made. The restuarant was maybe half full, so I wouldnt put it up to a "slammed" bartender. The food, when it finally did come, was great. The pork doughnut was fantastic, and the stuffed chicken breast was great.
River North looks like the kind of farm-to-table, hip, fun restaurant that the east village is becoming known for. It is cute and kitschy, with great details like bird-feeder lamps, beautiful flooring, and deep blue walls. The food however, DOES NOT live up to the the physical space. The "belly donut," which our server pushed hard, was great, but VERY small, and ended up being the only thing we liked. The "stuffed" chicken breast is actually NOT stuffed with anything. It is just a breaded chicken cutlet, like mom used to make with rice-a-roni. It arrived terribly overcooked, and shamefully under-seasoned. The branzino was no better, but was overseasoned and overcooked, like a piece of salt-cod. The accompanying vegetables and sauces on both entree plates did nothing to add to the dishes. There were maybe 10 people in the restaurant total, so the idea that the kitchen couldn't serve a chicken breast and a piece of fish cooked properly seems insane. But the real insanity were the prices: the "stuffed" chicken breast was $25 - for 6 oz. of overcooked cutlet. Terrible. F.
I enjoyed everything about my dining experience at North River. The staff is courteous, friendly, and attentive. The decor is charming. I'm a nature lover, so I adored the animal print wallpaper and bird drawings. All of the dishes we ordered were tasty, from the cheddar beer soup and fried chicken appetizer to the seared char "fish sandwich." Everything we ordered was familiar "comfort food," but prepared with a little something extra that made each dish special. Portions are generous too.
My husband and I had brunch at North River. We arrived fairly early so it was not busy but service, though friendly, was inattentive, we had to flag down our server at times when we needed attention. The room is handsomely decorated with adequate space between tables. The food was uninspired, not bad, just not noteworthy. I ordered a glass of wine that was awful, I suspect that the bottle had been open for days. I ordered a different wine and it was fresh but mediocre.
We were one of the few customers so the service was great. The ambiance is lovely, I would recommend this for romantic dinners. The food was good, especially the crispy beef cheeks is something that you should try. The portions were big, so you won't be hungry after three course meal.
The staff is exceptional y friendly and helpful. They do some beautiful things with vegetables, and the brisket burger is excellent. Atlantic char fried fish is an experiment that doesn't really work. But on the whole, a very pleasant and reasonably priced place for an informal meal.
We had a lovely thanksgiving day dinner at North River. The Prix Fixe menu had a nice variety of choices and the traditional side dishes were perfect and plentiful! We love the mood at this restaurant. It's casual and friendly, but there is a certain something special in the atmosphere.
Very good service, great food, adorable decor.
We went for brunch and were a little late but still got the table.
You have to try the pork belly doughnut! We ordered a second one.
my friends and I had a great meaL. great cocktails and food was excellent foodie standard quaity with an interesting menu. our favorite was belly donut. as good as it sounds!
Friend and I ordered the steak burrito platter, which the waitress said was meant to feed 2. They gave us 7-8 flour taco shells but only enough steak for 3-4 shells. Seriously?! Thanks for skimping on the steak; definitely not a meal for two as advertised. The platter also only came with refried beans, scrambled eggs, and measly steak strips,,,no pico de gallo or anything else one would enjoy in a burrito. Lackluster. The only good thing I ate was the belly doughnut. The restaurant was also not that busy (i.e. Empty bar seats) but the service was slow. Our waitress was friendly, but not very attentive.
This place is cheap-ish, but not worth the $25 I spent. Would rather go to a pricier place with really good, interesting food.
I came here on a busy Friday evening. My friend and I sat in the back we had the beer and cheddar soup, the romain salad, and split the stuffed chicken breast, we ended with the squash pumpkin cake. All the food was incredibly tasty and well plated. The ambiance was lovely and rustic, the music was catchy but not overwhelming. Oh and the cocktails were expretly made and strong to boot. All in all we had an excellent time and we can't wait to go back!
The whole experience was wonderful. Andrew was an amazing server who was both knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The food and cocktails were outstanding.
Loved all of the apps, especially the cauliflower salad, and the greens. all good for sharing. You will have to order the donut and hopefully you'll have someone adept w/the knife so all can share. Worth a bit but too much for one person. Entrees were average. Delicious ice cream for dessert. Will go back soon.
Thank goodness the food was excellent, because our server was a real sourpuss. Working a Sunday brunch seemed like the last place she wanted to be. Oh well, maybe she had a late night?
The ambitious and unusual menu was very interesting but the noise level was mind-numbing, even when our excellent server turned the music down. The food tasted good, but it was too dark to see it, which always causes me concern.
The staff at North River are incredibly professional and accommodating. The food was expertly prepared and plated beautifully. The ambiance was charming and cozy.
Lot of creativity here, for both the food and cocktails. Belly donut is must-have appetizer experience, but salmon crudo & deviled eggs also very good. The grilled, seasoned skin really augmented the delicate flesh of the sea bass main. And the creme de violette provided a great contrast to the mescal, lime and chile in my cocktail. Plus a happy atmosphere orchestrated by Michael, the maître d.
While this neighb place has tasty creations & fine bar treats, kitchen service was soooo slow between courses & very skimpy sides. Looks & taste top 10 / atmosphere & veggie portions 2
The facade starts the mood, is this the Hamptons? Some beachy hipster enclave? Whitewashed boards, an artful sign with a bird's head? What is this place? All is soon revealed -- a fun foodie wholesomeness of beef cheeks and pork belly donuts, a banana cream pie grandma made (if she bruleed the bananas). Smart attentive staff and a play list that harks back to a good 5 years ago or more. Mixed crowd, some youngsters, some not so much and on a scale of 1 - 10 price wise -- you're at a six without drinks. Still good value. We'll be back.
I love the decor in this place, which is what initially drew my husband and I inside. The staff is friendly and attentive. The food, though a bit over-priced for some items, is always excellent. It gets a little noisy at night, and you have to speak up in order to talk to each other. Overall, it's a really nice place - go enjoy!
This is my 4 th visit to North River and love the ambience service and food. Michael at the front is very pleasant and accommodating and the service is always personable ! The Pork belly donuts are delectable and love the hanger steak entree! Love being able to sit by the fron windows and feel the beautiful fall breeze!! I have recommended North River to many friends visiting New York!
The food, drinks and service were all remarkable. The biscuits and fried chicken were highlights. A great variety on the menu too.
Good stuff loved the brunch very yummy, portions were very generous, different eclectic. i was torn between many items, which is a good thing.
Delicious food, imaginative recipes, fantastic ambiance. A bit on the pricey side, but well worth it!
Their Belly Donut is an innovative starter. The option of half portions for their pasta dishes creates a second appetizer. Try their Rabbit Pappadelle.
For a restaurant with mid-to-high prices (not super pricey, but not a deal) the food and execution were terrific. Fantastic regionally sourced food, interesting executions, and amazing house baked rolls all added up to a fantastic experience in the East Village. Definitely a must-try.
wonderful food and service. upon realizing a dish i had ordered would have to be altered due to a component missing, the server was apologetic and the kitchen sent out an extra snack. nice touch!
amazing! Excellent and innovative cocktails, fantastic food. We sat at the bar on a Wednesday night and pretty quiet inside, but food/drink/service was fab. We would definitely go back again and you can make a meal out of sampling appetizers
We had a great time at North River. The food and drinks are quite good...we enjoyed everything. The brisket burger is delish (though it comes on a weirdly small plate) and the pork stack is great, too. The only (slight) disappointment was the heirloom tomato salad: it was expensive -- $16 -- and, while quite tasty, small. (In contrast to the burger, it's served in an oddly large bowl, which makes the portion seem even stingier.) The ice creams are all made in house and they're wonderful. We enjoyed our meal and will return.
We went with a friend who was visiting from Turkey. He loved it. We loved it. Have been raving about it to everyone!
Food is definitely pretentious (unlikely receipes!) not well cooked (eggs too hard for instance) and overpriced (16$++ for a small and simple tomato side salad!)
You have got to try this place before you can't get a reservation. Rustic decor, not too loud, great food. The waitress was not very attentive toward the end. It took about 10 min of looking for her to get the check BUT the food was totally worth it.
pork belly doughnuts
Smoked deviled eggs
This is a very cute spot to meet up with your girlfriends after work to have a few drinks and share a few apps. The appetizers were generous in size for small plates and reasonable priced. The cocktails aren't cheap, but they are delicious.
What a find! I wanted so many things that it was hard to choose.
Service was warms, friendly and excellent.
Excellent food with a creative twist.
I wanted to order every single appetizer and entree on the menu but of course that is not possible so I will be forced to make multiple return visits. The food was simply amazing.
I have only eaten in the front room and by the bar. The tables were great! The servers are knowledgable and friendly. I asked my server where they sourced their produce and he answered without hesitation. Without going into every dish I have had just try out a few apps like the roasted carrot salad, the deviled eggs, or the heirloom tomatoes. The food is original without being pretentious. A really great casual dinner spot.
