North Gate Grill Ratings and Reviews
I like North Gate Grill for business lunches because of its ambiance, good menu choices, and excellent service. The restaurant is usually an easy place to get a table and an easy place for conversations. It fills up when the hotel (Capital Hilton) hosts a conference, but otherwise is spacious and open with a very pleasant street-level view of 16th Street NW from large windows that fill the dining room with light. The menu has salads and sandwiches which I have almost always found to be well-prepared and tasty. Many of the servers have been there for quite some time.
first-service. The wait staff was so thoughtful to refill glasses and proactively provide to-go boxes-and so interactive/chatty w/our kids. We tipped accordingly.
Christmas brunch was great too. Kale and sweet potato mix-not bad! Bacon, turkey, prime rib (a little overdone but flavorful), waffles, eggs, fruit, French Toast casserole with pineapple run syrup...$10 bottomless mimosas/bloody Marys...Such a good last minute find on Christmas morning. Would like to try the regular menu.
I've already spoken with a manager about this, and have been offered a free meal to compensate for the experience I had. And I feel badly about writing this very negative review because I've eaten here a lot both previously when it was "Twigs" and since it's reincarnation, and I've previously always had really good experiences. But the level of service we experienced was so very poor that I have to caution future diners to inquire whether the staffing issues they had when I was there the other day have been addressed. As it was, my friend and I ended up leaving the restaurant after waiting for 1/2 hour for our order to be taken then another 1/2 hour for our food to show up, which it never did. I am hopeful that they will fix the problem because this has always been a convenient, reliable, decent place that serves pretty good food to meet friends, family or clients.
The North Gate Grill is right across from our office, so it is a wonderful place to take visitors. The menu, while not exhaustive, has some good options - and the food is always great. One of the highlights is always the attentiveness of the staff. Generally, it is not super crowded making it a good spot for a quiet conversation.
Now, if they were only open for dinner...
Myself and two other co-workers had visited this place on 2/11/15 for lunch. I had reserved a table for 3 for 12:15 PM. It took about 30 mins for someone to take our drink order and an extra 20 mins for another server to take our food order. We did not get our food until 1:30 PM. Staff was unorganized and unprepared. Manager was no where to be found after I requested to speak to the manager.
Mr. Terry - what a wonderful person. His jovial spirit and smile are welcoming. He was very courteous and personable. He really made our visit to the North Gate Grill worthwhile.
Our server was very gracious and attended to us with wonderful efficiency.
I have nothing negative to say about my dining experience on December 8, 2014.
I arrived at 11:30 for an early lunch. I was seated right away at a table near a window with a view of a courtyard garden. The server was attentive but not intrusive. The soup and salad combination was wonderful. The ambiance was conducive to catching up with an old friend.
I treated two of my staffers to lunch as a celebration for their promotions. We really enjoyed the space, the environment, and the food. The service was absolutely wonderful & the she-crab bisque soup was so meaty that we were all full from it before we even started in on our main lunch course. Thus, we all came out wagging left over bags for dinner... And even that was delicious, as I sat on my couch and enjoyed my uhh... Lunch! :-) Will definitely be back!
I go here fairly often when I want to have a good lunch and be able to hear my lunch companions. I almost always sit in the back room which is also attractive and light filled and lunch is good and I can converse with my lunch companion (s). I will be doing so again today.
The evening began with the sound level for the music increasing dramatically on several occasions -- so loud we could not hear ourselves. We had to ask the manager several times to turn it down. He always complied quickly but it was disruptive nonetheless. One of our guests ordered a drink that the bar tried to remake with a different ingredient because they were missing one. Awful. Should not have tried to pass it off. Service was so so. The food was the best part but some of the "small" plates would better be described as "minuscule" plates. Would not go back.
From the moment my large office group arrived, we were made to feel like they were waiting just for us. We were seated in front of the large windows, which I previously requested. Immediately, the servers began to ask for our drink orders and promptly returned with them. The food orders were handled the same way. Yet, we were not made to feel rushed. Before going to North Gate Grill, I had never been in a large group at a restaurant where every individual diner was made to feel like they were important. The food was very good, and overall the service was top notch. Thank you for making our office's celebration perfect.
Last minute reservation for ten (adults and children), but there was only one other couple seated when we arrived Sat late PM. It was nice to have all their attention, so service was good. The dining area is bathed in light with a green-house-like wall. The radiation made me uncomfortable after a while. It is an attractive room and there's adequate spacing among the tables. The kids got fries with their meals and they were visually appealing in the little metal baskets, and quite tasty. They only had two chardonnays by the glass, and the Votre Sante was not my style; the Acacia was fine. Sandwiches, salads, and mains: we got it all and everyone cleared their plates. Well done.
Of all the restaurant choices I have around the 15th to 17th & K St area, I pick this one for working lunches -- where I need to hear and be heard by dining companions. The ambiance is bright, contemporary and pleasant, with large windows looking out onto 16th Street. The service is excellent. These servers are true professionals -- most of them have been with this restaurant and its predecessor for many years. It's a hotel restaurant that doesn't feel like one. I travel a lot and know what most hotel restaurants are like. Plus the food here is above average.
Northgate is great for lunches with clients and business partners. The room is bright and pleasant. The noise level is perfect for conversation. The waitstaff are professional and discreet. I've had a number of items off the lunch menu and I've never been disappointed. Nice presentation.
We had a pleasant experience. The food was good with the basics found at many other hotel brunch spots: fruit, omelette station, muffins, etc. Interesting option = baked french toast, which was like a bread pudding. We had an extra-friendly server. For $22, a decent deal downtown.
So, it started off with the host....he looked extremely overwhelmed when we came in.
He said we had a reservation for 4 even though I clearly
reserved a table for five. He was wandering around trying to figure out what to do with us and then brought us to a table that wasn't ready. When we sat down we were given three menus to share among the five of us. We were never given two more menus.
Then it took forever before our server came to take drink order. One of us ordered sparkling water and was brought tap water. Our server also assumed our appetizer order was our entree order.
We were at this restaurant entirely too long for a business lunch. The crab soup was cold. The rest of the food was fine, but we will not be going back.
