North Beach Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
I have had excellent meals here for 30 years and just returned hoping it would be the same. It was...almost. The food remained excellent, they still served the Petroni wines, and the ambiance was similar with experienced waiters and bartenders. What was different? I had to ask for the olive oil! Italian restaurants are also renown the expectation that you will not feel rushed, have the time to enjoy your meal and your friends, and even have the table for the evening if desired. Unfortunately, something has been lost with this tradition at North Beach Restaurant. One felt hurried, if not harried and that took away some from the experience. However, I will be sure to return at the next opportunity and expect that similar decisions by others has necessitated the need to move people through the restaurant. Too bad that some things are not timeless.
The North Beach Restaurant is my favorite restaurant in San Francisco. I try to eat there whenever I'm in the city. The Tuscan food and fine wines are beyond amazing (don't miss the Tiramisu in any case), and the staff are absolutely charming. I've been eating there for 30 years and I'm never disappointed.
Disappointed. Arrived and was told they did not see my reservation on open table, but they said they would find us a table. Wanted a delicious Italian meal in North Beach. I ordered Ciopino- it was only so so, lots of fish very little shellfish and only 1 prawn. The salad was good. My friend enjoyed her seafood risotto.Dinner was pricey and server was less than attentive. I do not plan to return . There are many other restaurants to choose from in North Beach.
Visited North Beach Restaurant many, many years ago. Always remembered it as great food, great service, and great ambiance. Wanted to try it again. We weren't disappointed, though, alas, over the years, your memories become distorted. Still, we had very good food (two pasta dishes and caesar salads), attentive service, a good wine, and a leisurely evening.
Overall, a very good place to dine before going to Club Fugazi. We arrived before the crowds so it was very quiet inside. The host called me by name which was very welcoming (and I am not a regular). Our waiter made several menu suggestions. Food was brought to the table timely and it was served hot. We had the burrata to start which was the only disappointing menu item (not as rich as others we've eaten and missing the lovely olive oil drizzle). Otherwise we enjoyed linguini with shrimp, veal scaloppine and fettuccini with scallops. All quite tasty.
Waiter did not tell us any of the days specials;, we heard about them later from another table's waiter. My osso bucco was extremely salty, served with a very small slice of pre-made polenta, and a forkful of broccoli rabe. My husband's veal saltimboca was tasty but the veal was a bit tough. My son ordered a salmon steak and was pleased. I was expecting a good experience, given the restaurant's reputation. I would not recommend this restaurant--given service, food quality and price point. I would not return to this restaurant--SF has too many excellent ones to choose from.
The service and the wait staff were very good. The food was horrible. Stale bread, tasteless food over salted. I had the veal that was on special and it was so fatty and tasteless. The raviolis were under cooked and the sauces were just plain bad. Such a waste of $100++.
I haven't been here in years and when we visited the other night it was as though I had been coming for years as it was before we moved out of the area. Treated like old friends, truly a old family feeling. Enjoyed it and forgot how I loved the Pasta de la casa - al a Bruno.
We absolutely enjoyed every single thing we ordered. The Scallops were perfection, The appies and salad were amazing. My husband said one of the best veal parms he has ever had!! I had not been here in years. I have to say it is better than I remember. Simply a wonderful meal and superior service!!
The best fettuccine alfredo I have had!!! I go to North Beach Restaurant every time I am in town! One of my guests said it was the best salmon he had ever had. Exceptional service each time I have visited. Thank you!! Can’t wait for my next trip!
We took our son here for a farewell dinner, he was off to Thailand for some fun and volunteer work. As always, we had a great dinner. We had reservations for 3, but at the last minute my other son and his fiance wanted to join us, and this busy restaurant made it happen. I always have the Carbonara when I come here, should probably try other things, but since I don't get here as often as I'd like, I stick with the dish that makes my mouth water.
I booked a reservation for 6 people for New Year's Eve. When we arrived, the restaurant was packed and a little hectic up by the host stand. Once we were acknowledged, we headed to the downstairs room (did not know about) which was really cool! Had a different atmosphere than the upstairs but just as classy and well maintained. Our server was fantastic! He really made our meal enjoyable and was very knowledgeable about the wine and food menu. He was very accommodating with our requests and did not rush us at all. The food was very delicious and everyone enjoyed their dishes. There are lots of great Italian restaurants in North Beach and in San Francisco so I had high expectations with North Beach Restaurant and my expectations were certainly exceeded!! We will definitely return.
We had dinner on New Years Eve. Our total experience was delightful. We started with the Antipasto Toscano for Two: Home-Cured Prosciutto, Salame, Cheese, Marinated Calamari, Veal Shank, Beans and Salsa Verde. I am a fan of Prosciutto di Parma and was concerned the Home-Cured would not be as good. The Home-Cured was excellent. My partner does not eat seafood but when he tasted the marinated calamari he ate more than his half, and ordered the calamari-fritti for his main course which was prepared to perfection, accompanied by excellent sauces. I chose Veal Saltimbocca alla Nerone - Chef's Creation. Delicious. We finished dinner sharing Cold Zabaglione - Della Casa: an ending to a perfect meal. Service was superb. Corkage fee for our bottle of Dom Perignon was $35.00. We selected wines by the glass: the Barbera and Sauvignon Blanc suggested by our waiter were perfect accompaniments to our main course. The authentic Tuscan cuisine speaks for The North Beach Restaurant's longevity founded in 1970. Often we can not recall "what we did" on previous New Years celebrations. We will always remember celebration 2018 at The North Beach Restaurant. Thank you for a superb evening.
Great food and service on New Year's Eve. The waiter commented that they were really overbooked but he did a great job of staying on top of everything we needed with an excellent attitude. And the food was delicious. As we entered, the person we checked in with also commented on my online request for a quiet, romantic table as a surprise for my boyfriend and did his best to accommodate us. it was still pretty noisy there but I think that's common at every good Italian restaurant . This great dining experience complemented the rest of the activities on an excellent New Year's eve
We attended for a dinner on New Year's Eve so perhaps the increased level of patrons led to its downfall. The service was incredibly slow. When we ordered we were told there could be no substitutions, even when we were willing to pay. The chicken marsala was the worst I have ever had. It tasted like candied chicken and was entirely inedible. Unless the recipe changes, it should be taken off the menu completely. Overall it was a highly disappointing experience, at a hefty price tag.
A legend that continues to live up to its deserved reputation. Thankfully the techies don't have taste otherwise this landmark would be ruined. Keep up the outstanding work and professional, old school/world yet quirky service. Outstanding. And I weep just thinking about the vodka sauce and the veal. Ambiance? Accept it for what it is, and not for what it does not pretend to be, thankfully.
