North 44 Ratings and Reviews
Hadn’t been to North 44 for a large number of years ... so my memories of it are a stellar “foodie” destination with incredible table service and utmost professional atmosphere ...so now I know again that things change and so did North 44 ...BUT the food is no longer at the leading edge ... there are many more alternatives to this menu which tends to mediocrity and old style sauces to mask underperforming mains and appetizers ... at one point on this Saturday evening the noise ambience bordered on that of a downtown raw bar/meet up/hook up destination ... somehow Scaramouche and Scaramouche pasta bar have evolved elegantly to maintain an au courant presence, atmosphere and menu content... even Mitsura without Capra has delivered an outstanding edginess to menu design and execution ...watch your side mirrors North 44 because the competition is about to pass you and leave you behind... Mark McKewan’s reputation deserves better !
There are so many things I like about North 44, but the most significant praise I can offer is that after 20+ years of visiting this venerable establishment, I have never been disappointed. The food is rock solid, service is on point, and the ambiance is relaxed yet sophisticated.
This meal was on New Year's Eve, and I've always found that restaurants "struggle" on New Year's Eve. Not here. I was very happy to see their regular menu and no extra tables lurking in corners.
The lobster tagliatelle with chanterelles appetizer was the highlight of the night for us - I would have eagerly ordered a full portion! It was truly an example of flavors "you just can't get at home". My date's tuna carpaccio appetizer was very good - citrusy, smoky, and well seasoned.
Main course special was beef tenderloin and king crab for my date, which she relished, and which was thoughtfully cut for her in the kitchen (she has a broken wrist). My main was ostrich, also very well cooked, although to be fair, I think I'd get the beef if I had to do it again.
Desserts were lovely and delicious.
I was happy to pay the the bill when it came. Well done.
I absolutely loved my meal. I ordered the duck. My fiancé ordered a steak and it came as just a steak on a plate nothing else. We both agreed that it was overpriced for what we ordered. Service was excellent though. Would go back again for a nice date night.
My wife and I celebrated New Years Eve here. It was one of the best meals of our lives.
We started with salads, and for our entrees she had duck and I had ostrich (with thanks to our waitress who described these exotic dishes to us). The food was gorgeous and meticulously prepared. Every single bite was delicious and, sincerely, perfect. We ate very slowly to appreciate the complexity of each dish.
Our meal with a couple of drinks each plus tip cost us about $260 which is a rare extravagance (and certainly the most we've ever paid for a meal) but it was absolutely worth it. It was a luxury and a privilege to be served by such a talented team of experts.
We have always had a wonderful dinning experience at No 44 and this occasion was no different.
Excellent food, service and ambience. Among the many reasons we like No 44 is that, unlike many Toronto restaurants, you can hear each other at the table and have an enjoyable conversation.
While it is the case that North 44 is one of most expensive restaurants we have gone to, the quality of the food combined with the feeling of comfort and the ambience of the restaurant( and the fact that one can whisper and actually be heard) made our experience truly memorable.
This is a very elegant restaurant and it was quiet enough for a conversation, unusual these days. It wasn't completely full so I'm not sure what the ambience would be when every table is occupied. The service was lovely and attentive. Waited perhaps a little too long to take our dessert orders but we weren't in a great hurry. The food was really delicious, both entrees and desserts. The three of us thoroughly enjoyed our dinner.
I selected this restaurant so my girl friends and I could have our yearly Christmas dinner together at an exceptional restaurant. I will begin by saying the ambience and decor are beautiful. We were seated quickly and our waitress came over relatively quickly to take our drink order. Please keep in mind the restaurant was busy but not full. Our reservations were for 8:30 so a later seating.
After receiving a basket of bread we were left to enjoy our drinks. When the waitress finally returned, she told us the feature dishes and took our order. We asked for more bread but had to remind the waitress about it. We asked for a wine menu which took a while to come. The waitress didn’t come back to ask about our wine choice until the appetizers came, once they did we gave her our choice but didn’t receive the wine until we were half way into our main course. (The food was served WAY to quickly too)
The food is delicious but over priced for what you are getting. For $150 a person, I expected more than what we received. Also, there was no apology made for the delay in wine and while the waitress and bus boy were clearing the table, I had water poured over me and my jacket. Yes it’s only water but it would have been nice to have been compensated in some way.
We felt rushed, neglected and wait staff could have been friendlier.
Not worth the money. So many good restaurants in Toronto. This one will not be in my top 5.
I got the water knocked over and my gnocchi had a hair inside of it, unbelievable. I must say service was good. Also must say the gnocchi were amazing but after the hair, it took the magic away and killed the night for me. I guess these things sometimes happen but unfortunate 2 glitches back to back. They did make me another plate of gnocchi and did not charge - however for me this took the magic out of my night and couldn’t eat more....
The place is about the food and does not disappoint. I like it for a quiet night out after a crazy week. Not a see and be seen but sometimes that is exactly perfect! Service is solid and the room is small and cozy. But the food is the main event. There is no bad choice. Enjoy.
Food was good, what there was of it. Two small pieces of Bison for my main course and a few fork fulls of Salad for my appetizer.
My girlfriend had to make herself something to eat when we go home, after spending $300 on dinner!
Server was in a bad mood, and continually reached over the table or over top of my girlfriend to serve me or put pepper on my food.....so very unprofessional!
The place was half empty on a Saturday night and used to be one of the premium restaurants in Toronto. They have let it go now and I assume with no body coming anymore will be closing down soon.
Perhaps it is time as they have lost their enthusiasm for serving their customers.....
l have been a long time fan of the McEwan brand and quality.
I was disappointed with the food.
The fish was delicious but it was sitting on a bed over processed/over cooked spicy vegetables soup!
I would have preferred the vegetables to be fresh and crisp and clean. $48 is just not justifiable for this dish!
We came with fairly high expectations given the venue... but our meal and the service went way above our expectations. Of note, our server noticed that we were enjoying a nice conversation over our appetizers (she did not know at that time that it was a special event) so she came and asked us if we wanted to wait before the chef got going on our main course . I am not sure I have ever experienced such good service and it made the main course even more enjoyable once we were ready to move on to that stage of our dinner. Outstanding!
Simply put, North 44 sustains. It has literally never let us down. The menu seems to be constantly revived, and the service is unparalleled. Elaine the hostess, in particular, is beyond amazing. This is a high end dining experience that feels like family. I cannot say enough about it.
Food at No44 is consistently excellent and our most recent visit to celebrate our anniversary was no exception. The meals are creative and expertly prepared and delicious. We even had a special note to us written in chocolate on our desert plate. We had a wonderful evening.
We have been to North 44 many times over the years mainly for special occasions. This time it was my husband's birthday. Service was outstanding as well as the food. We both had the bison tenderloin entree- it was cooked perfectly to order and the flavours were amazing. The tomato and buffalo mozzarella salad appetizer was equally pleasing. We have never been disappointed at this restaurant and that's why we keep going back.
Cuz today is my boyfriend's birthday, and when I booked North 44, I wrote down some requirements for them. And I got a call from North this morning for confirming the reservation. And we talked about the details about my requirements. Then we went to North, the surrounding looks terrific! Services and foods are awesome! Actually foods tasty is similar with by mark I don't know why lol. Really worth the price.
