Norio's - The Fairmont Orchid - Kohala Coast Ratings and Reviews
We thought we would give this place a try since we were staying at the Fairmont and our daughter was dying for sushi. However, the bread was the only food item that wow'd us. The sashimi was fishy tasting and the rolls were stuffed with rice and sauce. The sushi was as good as our local kaiten place (conveyor belt place) but cost about 3x as much. Really wanted to love it...really disappointed.
My husband and I had dined at Norio's last year for our anniversary and the dinner was wonderful. We were excited about going back again. However, we did not have a good experience and were very disappointed.
My husband ordered the seafood soup, which, when it arrived, had less than a ladle of soup in the bowl. Very surprising for the price. He ordered sushi for dinner, which he said was excellent, and I ordered the special, which was salmon. When I ordered it I said it wanted it "cooked through". It was a beautiful piece of salmon but it was rare in the middle. When the server came back by, I asked her to please have it cooked more. She apologized and the restaurant manager came by and also apologized. When my plate was returned to me, it was about half the size of the original and still wasn't cooked through, although it was charred on the outside.
I was surprised that I wasn't given a new piece of fish as I would have expected that from this restaurant. But, aside from that, no one came back by to see if it was cooked properly. I thought that was odd since two people had come by to apologize for it not being prepared the way I had ordered.
So, what should have been a nice evening and meal, as we had experienced the year before, it was not. And, there was no discount given or offered.
This was our first visit to Norio's. As we live here, we did not try the sushi, so cannot comment on it. It looked good from the distance. The first thing I noticed was how wonderful the bread was...who would have thought green tea bread could taste so good...with the honey butter, I was in heaven. I would return just for the bread. The salmon special was a little too rich, but the wagyu beef was very good. Our table was outside, and the view of the sunset was perfect.
Liked it so much, we went back the next night. This time we had the whole snapper plus we had the Wagyu again. Awesome. Only wish I had more room, so I could have had more bread.
Great ambiance, elegant yet cozy. The staff was outstanding! Great Aloha service, our waitress patiently explained all options for our sashimi and sushi selections. Everything was delicious, fresh, and beautifully presented. We'd definitely return to celebrate a special occasion.
We ate the Endless Sushi which was incredible in not just the unlimited quantity of sushi you could eat, but the QUALITY as well. The lobster and wagyu beef rolls were magnificently plated and presented and the taste matched the incredible presentation. The service was attentive without being overbearing. I appreciated the warm hospitality of all the staff. The sushi chef even looked at us from the bar and wanted to know if the sushi was good which we replied "oishi." We certainly will return as the price may be high, but the quality and value is well worth every penny!
We went for a birthday dinner. The food was excellent. Plenty of choices for non sushi eaters. Service was excellent. The staff was friendly and attentive. The ambience was upscale. Great views, romantic if on a date, open for outside eating, quiet for good conversation.
The Kona lobster was delicious and cooked perfectly. They allowed us to order the steak and lobster which are separate meals then they split the meals and served us steak and lobster on our own plates. The staff was super friendly and helpful. Very attentive. We would eat here again in a heartbeat.
good selection of meat, fish, and seafood.Whole deep-fried fish was tasty.AYCE Sushi rolls were fresh and creative. Steak was thin but tasty. Misty our server was energetic, full of good suggestions, and very accommodating! It was her BDay- Happy BDay Misty and Mahalo!!
We did the all you can eat sushi menu. Wide variety of rolls and everything was great. I wish I hadn't stuffed myself but I guess that's what happens with this arrangement. Also good selection of Japanese beers and sake. Excellent service too. We are definitely going back soon.
Beautiful setting overlooking pool and beyond. It you're there for sunset, it can't be beat. Main entrees including pork were tasty but portions were definitely on the small side. Sushi was disappointing, rolls were very small, pricy and soggy with mostly rice, more like a half a roll you would normally have in a decent sushi restaurant. Very surprising based on expectations.
I took my wife on a date to Norio's. We had lots of good choices abd decided to stick with sashimi and nigiri. Everything we had was excellent! Located in the Fairmont Orchid hotel, the restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating. We were outside where we could see the ocean beyond the grass of the hotel. Beautiful. Dessert rounded out the meal. Again excellent. My wife is ready to go back for another date with me so that rates the event as 5 Stars!
We are staying here at the Fairmont Orchid for our honeymoon and have been told to try Norio's for dinner. Well we did and it was fantastic. I ordered some of the best sushi I have ever had in my life and got to enjoy it sitting at a table outside with the ocean breeze coming in. Everything was great.
Outstanding Sushi / Sashimi
Excellent Value for food and service and ambience
Definitely recommend for sushi lovers
My wife and I visit Hawaii regularly this is the best sushi we've had on the island
Also though we didn't participate they're also a Japanese steak house.
Oh almost forgot to mention they have a extensive
Sake menu to choose from
We didn't love it. It was really disappointing for being at such a nice hotel. We eat sushi a fair amount in North Carolina... and it was much better than Norio's! My rose sangria was way too sweet. The miso soup was way too salty. The shrimp tempura inside the sushi roll was soggy and cold. It was defiantly not made to order. The rice on the sushi was mushy. It was an all around not great meal
We Got seated for about 1/2 hour , no one come to serve us , it took quite a while before someone show up and gave us cold water ....and after we order , we were left alone again , just don't understand what is going on....for the green tea that took no time to prepare it didn't cane not until we complain , soup came out warm! The Resturant doesn't even seen like busy busy ! I think they forgot about our whole table or we are not drinking any alcohol that's why we are not that important ?? Not recommend this Resturant to anyone , services is ridiculous bad ! Doesn't matter how good the food are !
My mother and I had a fabulous time at Norio's, enjoying the sushi rolls and overall dining experience. I can't recommend it highly enough as a great restaurant for special occasion on Big Island.
Ambiance: romantic, yet somewhat casual (you are still on a beach after all), and very welcoming.
Service: Staff was extremely attentive, wonderful at suggestions to order, and brought a beautiful dessert for my mother's birthday.
Food: Ah the good stuff. Although I knew the food would be good since it's a Fairmont, the quality and creativity were so much better than expected! We opted for the all you can eat sushi, which, for the two of us, isn't usually worth it. This time, it was. Not only are you not limited on which rolls you can order (though there is a limit on quantity for certain rolls), but it's definitely a great value if you're only interested in the sushi rolls. We were expecting a much more expensive meal when we opted to go here for dinner, but I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised that the prices were not outrageous, the food exceeded expectation for a typical tourist location, and we were never pressured to order more like at some high-end restaurants.
I will DEFINITELY come back here next time.
Very disappointing meal. The quality of the fish was adequate (at best); however, the preparation/presentation was severely lacking, including (but not limited to) improperly prepared rice and edamame; burnt soft shell crab; 45+ minutes between order and first course; running out of sake... In short, the restaurant, as well as the Fairmont Orchid in general, appears to be understaffed (although the waitstaff, without exception, have been extremely courteous) and severely lacking in quality control.
