Nolen Kitchen - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
Food tasted good . Crab cakes could be better , they were a bit mushy and. It lump crab .
Edamame was tasty with siracha salt .
Wild chicken: white meat was a bit tough . Dark meat had good flavor with mustard and mushrooms .
Sea scallops were cooked perfectly and tasty.
Risotto was a bit lukewarm .
They could warm their plates to ensure that the base the food is sitting on doesn't cool .
Great service .
Wine selection is nice.
Trendy 😆, good for get together with friends or even with kids . Anniversary dinner / maybe pick somewhere else with a bit more ambiance . It was noisy and sometimes hard to hear across the table . I would go back and try lunch .
Great experience-we ate on the patio and it’s beautiful. We had poke as an appetizer and it was wonderful. I had scallops as my entree and my husband had short ribs with truffle mac and cheese. We each thought we had picked the best dinner. I’m sad that I can’t remember the name of our server because she did a terrific job. Can’t wait to go back.
Pretty good however I was very disappointed to find the menu had changed - no longer offering some of my favorites. Our server indicated here is new ownership and therefore some signature dishes are no longer available. Too bad that your on line menu still includes them, which is why we opted to dine there that night! :(
I must preface this with the fact that I eat out a great deal because I travel for a living. The tartare and the veggies were amazing. I decided to opt out of a larger entree. My service was just okay. It was just me and there were long periods of time where my server was not available. I know it is hard to balance attention versus diner privacy. Overall, she was very nice and genuine but young and often greeted me as "madame" and a Mrs. I am a single 40ish female and both of those sounded really artificial. I think most of her demeanor was just her age and lack of experience. She noted that the apple pie was the "best" dessert and it was really just average - sliced apples with a crumble. I was actually surprised how traditional it was based on your menu and she may need to describe it like that going forward. As a southerner, this was just run of the mill. She was kind and took it off my bill. On the whole, I would definitely come back.
This was my third time dining at Nolen Kitchen and it was easily the worst experience I've had thus far. The service was subpar and the food was right there with it. While the appetizers were spectacular and full of flavor that was about the only part of the meal that was. Whichever chef prepared our entrees failed to season or add any type of flavor to the risotto, crab cakes and scallops. The dessert was really the kicker though. We ordered 3 different flavors of ice cream all served melted and what did remain was a merely ice. Then I was presented with a plastic spoon to enjoy my soup since they noted that they were out of spoons....The restaurant was not full even close to capacity and yet they handed me a fast food plastic spoon in all seriousness. I mean come on. Overall the experience was very disappointing and I had colleagues from out of town who were expecting a fantastic meal at a neighborhood gem.
Service was moderate, taking almost 15 minutes to get a cocktail even though restaurant was only one-third full on a Saturday night. Food was very poor. This included chewy, dry blackened chicken sandwich. It was more burned than blackened. Meat in pasta dish tasted cheap and gamey. Music was dated, and menu had no creativity. Dead for a Saturday night. Place may be suffering from a death spiral, where food quality is lowered to save money, but then you continue to hemorrhage customers due to poor experience.
Nolen has lost their game a bit. Their patio needs a refresh. Broken table/chairs/umbrellas. Their paper menus were dirty, covered in food, and over used. You get the sense they are not doing well since they have not reinvested on basic things like reprinting of menus and patio furniture.
The Fried Green Tomato appetizer was wonderful as were our chicken sandwiches. We had wonderful and attentive service and ate outside on a charming little patio. We noticed people from the Myers Park area walking there to enjoy the food and wonderful seating on the patio.
Cute restaurant in trendy area so I had high hopes. Restaurant was modestly busy for a Friday evening with several larger groups present creating a high noise level in the space. I ordered the shrimp and grits which was recommended by the server. It came out with 5 large shrimp and looked good; however, it was so salty that I could not eat it. I finally got the server's attention and he took the entree back to the kitchen and sent over a manager who stated that they would remake it. It came out after my husband had finished his entree so kind of ruined us eating together. Would have expected them to either comp the entree or offer us a dessert on the house for the poorly prepared entree but nothing but an an apology was offered which was disappointing considering the price point. My husband said his burger was fine but nothing special. Probably would not return to this place as there are better options that are less costly.
Pleasantly Surprised! Went this past Saturday with my wife. Started with drink and app at the bar. Bar was empty, but service and cocktails were great as well as the Tuna Poke! Service at table was great as well with Lou. My wife had Salmon with a Quinoa which she liked. I had Scallops and Risotto. Both were very good. Restaurant was a little on empty side but patio was full. Will go again.
I had a very good experience at Nolen Kitchen several months ago, so I took my office staff out for lunch this week. However, the experience was not good. On the bright side, our server (Jeff) was outstanding - very attentive, courteous, professional and efficient. However, the food was inconsistent: my chicken sandwich was spicy (not noted as spicy on the menu) and extremely salty, my colleague's Tiramisu was far too creamy (she took 1 bite and left the rest - unfortunately she was too embarrased to say anything until afterwards), and the ice cream was extremely icy (like it was freezer burned). In their defense, they did take the ice cream off the bill, but their response was "it is kept in a freezer, so it should be cold and icy".
Our experience at NK is always wonderful! Lou is such a pleasant and fun server. The food is very good and a great value. My husband and I love the chicken & waffles, omelets and French toast. We also love the mini chocolate scones they give you while waiting on your breakfast to arrive! Perfect for early morning breakfast as they open at 9am. All and all a great restaurant we highly recommend!
I had an outstanding lunch- half salad and half sandwich. The NK salad was extremely fresh with vibrant colors and a light vinaigrette dressing and the cab cake on ciabatta was full of crab/ minimal filler. I left the business lunch looking forward to my next Nolen kitchen visit:
NK never disappoints. One of our favorite restaurants in Charlotte. My husband & I love going here for Sunday breakfast. They are one of the few quality restaurants open early on Sundays. The food and service are always superb. Lou was excellent on this visit. We highly recommend NK!
Not many people there, so it was quiet and easy to talk. The Cobb salad was very good, though I think the dressing was a little bland. I had coffee and apple cobbler with ice cream for dessert. It was great!! The service was very good and atmosphere was pleasant. The biggest negative for me was that the water was served from a large chilled bottle that was left on the table, but there was no ice at all. The water quickly became lukewarm. I would go back. Easy parking.
Great place to eat at! Simple clean atmosphere with the noise level very low civic good for any occasion. The menu selection is great, a highly recommend the muscles they are far far the best I've had around in the area lately. I had the scallops which were phenomenal! I definitely will be back to revisit this restaurant. Their beer selection is average with a few seasonal beers but definitely something for everyone.
We went to Nolen Kitchen for Father's Day and it was the wrong choice. It took a bit (5minutes) from seating to have the waiter come to the table, only to say he'd be right back. We were seated just outside the kitchen, one of the worst places in the place. I was bumped several times, servers running in and out of the kitchen.
My wife asked for a glass of water, and finally went to the bar to get it. We were almost finished by the time some came to ask if we needed anything.
The place was packed so perhaps our experience was the outlier, but I would not give it another try.
