About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Hot spot
  • Lively
As the first uptown New York location for legendary chef Nobu Matsuhisa, we opened with much anticipation in the summer of 2005.Nobu's co-owners are his longtime partners: renowned restaurateur Drew Nieporent, Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro, and Hollywood film producer Meir Teper. The restaurant showcases Nobu's signature new style Japanese cuisine with classic dishes such as Tiradito Nobu Style and Black Cod Miso. The restaurant received three stars from the New York Times.

I started with the miso soup and shashito peppers den miso which we were both tasty. I then followed up with the yellowtail/ jalapeño hand roll and finished with the beef toban yaki. I did not feel the beef toban yaki was the best but I will be back to try more of the menu for sure! The lychee martini was very smooth and delicious!

The flavors and presentation were impressive, and the staff was attentive throughout. That said, the overall ambiance wasn’t quite what I expected. The dining area leaned more toward a family-friendly vibe with minimal intimate seating, which felt a bit off given the price point. I was hoping for a more elevated or romantic atmosphere. However, the bar downstairs had a much sexier, more grown-up energy—I’d probably return just for that, and for the food, which truly stands out.

Food was excellent. Our main server was good. Additional servers bringing individual dishes out need to learn to smile, speak clearly and show more passion for the food and service. At these prices I expect excellent service all round and we didn’t get that.

Waited for 10 minutes and waved my hand for 5 minutes to be noticed. There were probably 3 other waiting staff that saw me but none took much initiative. They seemed way more keen to get us pay for water/drinks though, as they come check every 2 mins for water or drinks order but nothing much else. After the initial service disappointment it was fine. For me, the rock shrimp was way too salty. I left most of mine. Black cod kept up its standard through the years.

My husband and I have now dined at NOBU57 over 50 times over the years. We ordered the Omakase last night. The spicy tuna hand roll was great. Then the first three courses were delightful. Then, a fish dish came (bland and uninspired.). Nothing exceptional (about it B-).Then a steak dish. Next time we will just order off the menu (mostly fish). It was expensive and not great. I had to get up and locate the waiter twice (once for cocktails). Not the NOBUY57 that we love.

The lamb chops were raw and the service was super slow with waiter talking to next table over for 10 minutes
