Nix's Mate - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
Restaurant appeared to be changing ownership. Not appropriately staffed so wait staff was constantly slow. Requested a table area to celebrate a retirement and hostess wasn't even aware of the request. Two popular dishes were not at all available (how can you be out of lobster in Boston???). Took over 1/2 hour to get coffee served and they were out of decaf. To top things off, wifi password would not open so could not send an important email.
Have been to this restaurant many times in the past and it was GREAT. That's why I recommended it for this retirement celebration. Needless to say I was embarrassed.
Very disappointed. Have been to this restaurant in the past and really enjoyed it. On their website they advertise $1 oysters every day from 4-7. We arrived to be told they did not have any oysters because they were closing the restaurant next week, but she could not tell us where they would be going. They should not advertise something they aren't offering. The restaurant was practically empty. We chose not to stay.
Made a reservation for Mother's Day at 11am through Open Table a few days before Sunday, May 8th. I was directed to Open Table through their website, which stated that they serve brunch from 11am-4pm. This was perfect for our Mother's Day Brunch! However, once we got there things changed. We were told that they DON'T serve brunch and that new ownership took over a month ago and has yet to change the website. Needless to say this killed our Mother's Day plans because the menu they offered for lunch did not appeal to our mothers. Thankfully the hostess had given us a few recommendations in the area and we were able to salvage the day. I hope that they have fixed the issue by now and make it known to people who plan on it for a special occassion that it is no longer available.
I feel like the restaurant has 'dialed back' the creativity of their luncheon menu -- that used to have echoes of their more intriguing full dinner menu (Which I have not seen)
Don't get me wrong, many of the items are quite good and like I've said I've been 2x in a week -- but the burger, the club sandwich, the variety of salads, etc. are pretty 'safe' fare on a menu for a business lunches... totally understandable. However I recall a DINNER menu that was pretty cool and there were some tastes of that in the luncheon menu.
Either way, I'll be back.
Very loud and the wait staff was horribly dismissive. The hostess literally threw the menu at me. I had a reservation and she told me that I couldn't take a table (??) but could sit in the lounge. Very strange over all. Not surprised they closed up shop at the Hilton.
Nix's turned out to be a bit more trendy than we were expecting. It is an after-work gathering spot with couches and high-tops, not so much a dinner spot. However, I had one of the best lobster rolls I've had in awhile. The appetizer selection looked good too, although we were definitely looking for a more substantial meal. Good food, at a reasonable price. We chose the place more for convenience than anything else, and it turned out well. We were a little too senior for the rest of the crowd, although Nix's is in a Hotel. The waitress wasn't the most attentive, but other staff helped out.
The appetizer tuna tacos were delicious. We had the filet and a steak tip caesar salad and the meats were cooked exactly as we had ordered. Our waitress Jessica was informative and fun to talk to. The laid back atmosphere was just what we were looking for and Nix Mate fit the bill.
i went with 4 girlfriends to celebrate a birthday, saturday at 6pm. it was dead quiet, but we also went in the middle of a snowstorm. the oysters were good (nothing to write home about), and the drinks were good as well. overall nothing bad about the experience, but the vibe was the best part about it. very cool interior.
I've been to Nix's Mate on several occasions and find that it is a reliable spot for casual business meetings as well as a family dining spot (e.g., after the aquarium or away from the Theater District crowds). The menu has some terrific standards but also a handful of surprises (e.g., there was once a lobster with a maple glaze, or chicken & waffles, etc.) that make dining here a pleasure. I'l be back.
Not a great place to go for lunch, as service was EXTREMELY slow, so much so, we asked for our coffees to go (but that added another 10 minutes to our wait). I was with a group of 7 people and we were in a semi private room. We felt like we were forgotten because we rarely saw our server. Would not recommend the Eggie Tuna Tartare...bizarre combination of eggs, pickles, tuna and a mayo type spread. I had asked for greens as my side. I got fries. Steak salad with rice noodles...would not recommend. Noodles were not rice noodles, more like raman noodles and my colleague said it tasted like cole slaw...disappointing. One colleague ordered the chicken sandwich specifically with bacon on the side. It was served ON the sandwich. Don't know if these errors were server or chef, but little attention to detail on someone's part. Because were were a larger group, 18% tip was automatically added. If I had the choice, I wouldn't have left a tip or a very small one. The restaurant was so loud, it was hard to hear people sitting next to you. We did start with appetizers, lobster tater tots and calamari....those were both good, but small portions. In the Open Table reservation, I had noted it was for a birthday celebration. Nothing special was done. Two thumbs down overall...would not recommend for a meal. Perhaps for drinks at the bar would be a better choice if I had to go back.
Took two of my employees here for a business lunch. Two of us had a salad and one of us had fish tacos. The presentation of the food was gorgeous. The portions were just perfect. All three dishes were delicious. Our waitress was very attentive. We didn't want to go back to work. Highly recommend. I'll be back for sure with others.

I know I'll be back several times.
The waiters/waitresses were more interested in talking to each other than serving. After being seated it took so long for water to be brought out that we had to look around to ask for someone to bring some and there were barely any other patrons. The atmosphere was nice and the food was ok.
