About Niu Japanese Fusion Lounge
Opened in August 2007, this spacious pan-Asian eatery in the River East right next door to the AMC Theatres combines original design with a rare sense of humor and adventure. Niu's fluid, sexy, casually luxurious dining room can accommodate up to 225 guests, so large parties are definitely welcome. An added attraction is the sleek lounge area complete with a spectacular "must-see" chandelierhich.
One of the reasons that people keep coming back to Niu is of course of the eclectic food and drink selections. Our inventive menu blends Sushi, Japanese, Thai, Korean, and Chinese influences: little bites of modern Tokyo, Bangkok, and Shanghai, all blended in with the energy of Chicago. The menu offers a variety of sushi basics, but the real enticements are the one-of-a-kind "fusion makis" with such names as "Sexy Mexican," "White Angel," and "Diablo". For those sushiphobes, there is a fantastic selection of vegetarian, stir-fry and soup creations.

Niu Japanese Fusion Lounge Ratings and Reviews
When we checked in with our reservation, the hostess asked us to wait, but the restaurant was half empty. Others came for pick up and were taken care of and some walked in and were then sat before us?! Once seated in the dimly lit, large space, I noticed the leather seats were very worn down and the table- diner-style faux wood tables- were also chipped. I became concerned about the food- it is sushi afterall. The menu, however was really good. Lots of options for my whole family (we were celebrating my daughter's bday). Our waiter arrived. He seemed very unsure of how to greet us. He wasn't able to explain items like the tea options. But it was more than that as the meal went on. 1) he took my miso with my spoon still in the bowl, not on the side, i wasn't done. 2) He never cleared our other empty appetizer dish before bringing 2 of the 4 entrees. My daughter and I sat with our maki waiting for the rest of our family's hot dishes. I will say the food was very good! Really- great rolls, nice tempura, fluff lobster rice. 3) Then when we weren't even all finished eating he asked if we wanted anything else. I said no thanks. And he dropped the check. WE WERE STILL EATING?! No plates had been cleared and he wasn't done with his shift. He continued to take tables. When the table was cleared- not by him- but a non english speaking busser, whom i asked for a dessert menu b/c as i said in the reservation- it was my daughter's bday- the mgr gave us the menu. We ordered a simple cake. It took 10 minutes to serve? We asked and he said the kitchen was working on it??? finally, after finishing the cake, we placed our credit card in the bill fold. He took it...and only then added the cake, rather than before. it was the oddest thing. And yet, I still over tipped! because i worked in food service for several years and know how hard it can be. As we left I told a different hostess that 3 stalls in the women's restroom didn't have TP and that he needed more training.
Went here last night with my family it was easy to get reservation and the place is walking distance to our hotel at the Sheraton Grand. The ambiance was great and clean. The servers were great until our waiter forgot my order and I had to remind him. I got my dinner but my kids and my husband finished eating while I’m still working on mine. The server made up for it by giving us 10% off total bill, I think that was a good gesture. The food was ok but the dessert was delicious. My kids love the mochi ice cream.
We have been to Niu several times and it's one of our favorite restaurants in Chicago. It's relatively easy to get a reservation at even on a weekend. The fish tastes very fresh and the presentation is always very nice. I'd recommend Niu to anyone looking for good sushi in Chicago without a hassle getting a table. Delicious!
Just into town in Chicago and went looking for sushi for lunch near my hotel. Was able to get in for the lunch specials served before 3pm. Sushi assortment was 4 nice sized nigiri and a maki made out of shredded mystery fish. with salad and miso. Spider roll was half soft shell crab and half shredded mystery fish. It was okay, not great, but not bad for the money. Ingredients were fresh.
We were in Chicago for the Thanksgiving Day Parade that our son was marching in. Not knowing what would be open on Thanksgiving we gave NIU a try and were very happy we did!! Great food, ambiance, service!! Will definitely be back next time we are in Chi-Town!
We've been to Niu several times before and it's always a reliable venue for high quality sushi. Service is attentive without being overbearing. The ambiance is pleasant with interesting decoration, though the lighting level is low enough that my older eyes needed the assistance of the "flashlight" app on my phone to be able to read the menu.
Our group tends to go there for the sushi, so I can't comment on the food that comes out of the kitchen. The sushi is of consistently high quality and the selection of nigiri and rolls is reasonably good. (Can't compare to sushi-friendly cities like S.F. and Seattle, but....
Average menu with standard sushi choices. Nothing really stood out on the menu. The rainbow roll I had was presented well but taste was missing. No side orders of tempura when I asked, however, the waitress returned with a suggestion of sweet potato tempura side. This sounded acceptable but when I received it, I was surprised that it actually was presented in a sushi roll form. Too starchy and lacking taste. I was disappointed with my choices.
NIU is a great little restaurant with creative cocktails and food. The variety of appetizers, sushi rolls, and entrees are impressive. We eat here quite often and are always happy with our meals. The wait-service can be a little hit or miss, but overall satisfactory and never very bad.
The food was excellent. We all had something different and everything was wonderful. Excellent service and comfortable atmosphere. It was lively but you could hear those at your table without a problem. Definitely recommend this place. It was fun and tasty.
Was in Chicago on business and I was hungry for sushi rolls so I used Open Table to find sushi restaurants near my hotel. This one looked interesting and it was a short walk from my hotel. I found the atmosphere modern and pleasant. The service was fast and the waiter friendly and attentive. The sushi roll was great! I will definitely go back when I am in Chicago again.
