The sushi is outstanding good - as always.
The furniture need replacement - looks old and not very inviting for sitting down in business clothes.
The service was less good than usual, must have been a long day for waiter...
It was a choice of convenience and turned out to be excellent!
Our appetizers of spicy tuna and sea bass were excellent in flavor and presentation. Our sushi and sashimi entrees were very tender and flavorful. The Sashimi Combination was so artistically presented that other patrons stopped to comment. I highly recommend this restaurant.
They have pretty good sushi and ramen. Fresh and delicious! Prices are reasonable as well. Great ambience.
Niu is one of our favorite restaurants in our neighborhood (Streeterville). We’ve had most of the menu and have never been disappointed. The sushi is exceptional and the other kitchen dishes are always great. Large portions, so everything is definitely shareable! Service is great as well. Good drinks from the bar and the cucumber water is a nice touch. Would 100% recommend!!
Becoming a ritual, movie at the adjoining theater and dinner at Niu.
Surprisingly good menu and outstanding preparation of even the most
'routine' thai dishes. Really is a neighborhood gem.
Great atmosphere! Great food! Wonderful service! Recommend to everyone.
The specialty sushi rolls were outstanding
Service was attentive and timely
The restaurant is comfortable and roomy, they keep it pretty dark in the back half of the restaurant. Too dark for me. I had to turn on the flashlight on my phone to see the menu
Both the dragon and sexy Mexican rolls were great.
Also, some of the best service I've had in a while.
What a great find! I ordered two maki rolls, both of them excellent. My server was friendly and very knowledgeable. Will definitely be back.
Excellent choice and convenient downtown location for sushi and other Japanese specialties.
Went there with the kids, service was great, food choices were excellent, and the ambience was quaint. The lighting was subdued, almost too dark but that allowed for some fun poking at our table...! The Pad Thai was different than our eleven year old expected... but that didn’t deter her appetite! And she wolfed down the ‘new’ dish with relish. I ordered the red snapper.... and dug into the serving dish with a singular mind not to share... it was that good.. the green beans were super fresh, the onions were super juicy.... the fish was fresh and prepared to perfection. The side of rice was very well cooked and super tasty.... our four year old ONLY ate that....!
The Kung Pao chicken was a delicious balance of mild spice, tender chicken and classic flavors making it delectable as well.
Except for the lack of kids games and crayons (which by the way, is how we normally eat at home anyway), there was very little negative, if anything at all that I could find.
A great place Forbes intimate conversation or family dining.
The food was excellent, as was the service, but the ladies bathroom was unclean and, (this is important) the soap in the dispenser was what I call 'Catholic School Soap"--liquid that smells terrible and the scent of which never leaves your hands. Up your soap game and clean the bathrooms and it will be a regular place for my friends and I to go.
Sushi was average. Decor was worn. Chairs were beat up. Waiter kept on forgetting things.
Excellent sushi and appetizers, really loved the shisito stuffed peppers and the sexy Mexican roll. Will come back for those :)
Food was pretty mediocre. Not even the white rice was very good
We chose this restaurant primarily because it is located next to the movie theater and had an appealing, reasonably priced menu. Thus, we weren't really expecting to be overly impressed. We were delightfully wrong in our expectations. The ambiance was fantastic, well suited for a romantic date. The food was amazing! The service was very good as well. We will definitely visit again, and we've already recommended it to others!
post movie late lunch was great. They let us order Ramen Happy Hour a few minutes after it ended, and it was delicious. Great place to go after a movie at the AMC 21 on Ohio. Everyone was wonderful and it was not noisy!
NIU has been a favorite of mine for many years; I absulutely love this place! My last visit was a bit disappointing due to very poor service from the waiter. I will keep his identity concealed, but this is where our service fell very short: 1) major deduction due to him not even noticing that we had issues with one of our dishes and he never came back to the table to check on us until it was time to pay, 2) bringing our food and no silverware leaving us to try to flag down a bus boy, 3) Not knowing the answer to a question about one of the ingredients in the ramen. The food at this place is wonderful and filled with flavor which fortunately made me be able to look past our waiters errors. Hands down one of the best places for sushi, noodles, and unique appetizers! Despite my one pretty awful experience with a waiter, I will be returning in the near future.
Good place. Good food. Solid 4/5.
Food and drinks beautifully prepared yummy!
Terrific dinner at a very fair price in a lovely place. Also a great spot for dinner before going to Winter's jazz club, just a block away.
Good sushi and great service. We just had miso soup and nigiri and both were very good.
Good Experience. Good sushi. Sesame chicken was good. Did not care for the iced tea. Nice bathrooms. Service was remarkable. Solid 8/10 overall . Would eat again. Would recommend to family and friends.
Food is great but portions are too big, smaller portions will look more appealing...
Just really dark and loud.
Wonderful sushi! Will be back!
Lighting level is pretty dim
When we checked in with our reservation, the hostess asked us to wait, but the restaurant was half empty. Others came for pick up and were taken care of and some walked in and were then sat before us?! Once seated in the dimly lit, large space, I noticed the leather seats were very worn down and the table- diner-style faux wood tables- were also chipped. I became concerned about the food- it is sushi afterall. The menu, however was really good. Lots of options for my whole family (we were celebrating my daughter's bday). Our waiter arrived. He seemed very unsure of how to greet us. He wasn't able to explain items like the tea options. But it was more than that as the meal went on. 1) he took my miso with my spoon still in the bowl, not on the side, i wasn't done. 2) He never cleared our other empty appetizer dish before bringing 2 of the 4 entrees. My daughter and I sat with our maki waiting for the rest of our family's hot dishes. I will say the food was very good! Really- great rolls, nice tempura, fluff lobster rice. 3) Then when we weren't even all finished eating he asked if we wanted anything else. I said no thanks. And he dropped the check. WE WERE STILL EATING?! No plates had been cleared and he wasn't done with his shift. He continued to take tables. When the table was cleared- not by him- but a non english speaking busser, whom i asked for a dessert menu b/c as i said in the reservation- it was my daughter's bday- the mgr gave us the menu. We ordered a simple cake. It took 10 minutes to serve? We asked and he said the kitchen was working on it??? finally, after finishing the cake, we placed our credit card in the bill fold. He took it...and only then added the cake, rather than before. it was the oddest thing. And yet, I still over tipped! because i worked in food service for several years and know how hard it can be. As we left I told a different hostess that 3 stalls in the women's restroom didn't have TP and that he needed more training.
Sushi rolls came out quickly, service was speedy. It was a bit dark in the back booths and the music was hard to talk and hear over. Overall a nice dinner on a night out.
I usually get sushi, but went with the ramen. It was fantastic and as good as ramen from allleys in japan. My wife and kids had sashimi and some specialty rolls. They were in heaven.
We went for our Christmas dinner and everything was perfect!
Went here last night with my family it was easy to get reservation and the place is walking distance to our hotel at the Sheraton Grand. The ambiance was great and clean. The servers were great until our waiter forgot my order and I had to remind him. I got my dinner but my kids and my husband finished eating while I’m still working on mine. The server made up for it by giving us 10% off total bill, I think that was a good gesture. The food was ok but the dessert was delicious. My kids love the mochi ice cream.
Small fish is good, Rameon is not greasy and tasty.
Please bring back paper towels in restrooms please
Spoiled by the smell of the lake sadly
We have been to Niu several times and it's one of our favorite restaurants in Chicago. It's relatively easy to get a reservation at even on a weekend. The fish tastes very fresh and the presentation is always very nice. I'd recommend Niu to anyone looking for good sushi in Chicago without a hassle getting a table. Delicious!
Awesome restaurant! Great service for a great value. Really good food!
Just into town in Chicago and went looking for sushi for lunch near my hotel. Was able to get in for the lunch specials served before 3pm. Sushi assortment was 4 nice sized nigiri and a maki made out of shredded mystery fish. with salad and miso. Spider roll was half soft shell crab and half shredded mystery fish. It was okay, not great, but not bad for the money. Ingredients were fresh.
