One of the reasons that people keep coming back to Niu is of course of the eclectic food and drink selections. Our inventive menu blends Sushi, Japanese, Thai, Korean, and Chinese influences: little bites of modern Tokyo, Bangkok, and Shanghai, all blended in with the energy of Chicago. The menu offers a variety of sushi basics, but the real enticements are the one-of-a-kind "fusion makis" with such names as "Sexy Mexican," "White Angel," and "Diablo". For those sushiphobes, there is a fantastic selection of vegetarian, stir-fry and soup creations.
Service was great and my children enjoyed the beauty of the restaurant and their dinner selections.
I sat at the bar on a Friday night. Both bartenders (a male and a female) seemed so bored to be there. After ordering one maki roll, they cleared my entire plate and set up without asking if I was going to order anything else. I still tipped 20% but they only deserved half of that as 50% was barely their effort level.
We were a party of 7 consisting of 3 couples and 1 single person. We asked for separate checks and were given a very hard time about it. They kept saying we were a group - OK. But we had to struggle to get them to agree to separate checks, which they eventually did. With that, emphasized that we were a group. They automatically added 20% service to the bill. the food was good, its presentation good, the rest of the experience was good.
What the food lacked in japanese authenticity it made up in ambiance. If you are going for authentic japanese or asian cuisine, this is not the place to be. Taste I think is much catered to the american palate. Spicy ramen was just spicy, no flavor, my korean kalbi beef likewise was just sweet without the flavor I was looking for.
Mikey is the best server
It’s a pretty good spot for Asian fusion. Not the best quality food but not a bad choice if you need somewhere decent in the area.
Delicious food, great service. Highly recommend! Try the Peking chicken!
Overpriced bad food!! Save your money for popcorn.
Great food and good value prices during happy hour.
We were very pleased with the options - sushi or fusion. Server was very attentive.
The pad Thai was horrible but we ordered a ton of food and everything else was delicious. It was the best ramen I’ve ever tasted. Great service and clean. We had a great time and would absolutely return.
Four people ordering a variety of dishes - from Sushi to stir fry and everything was great. We managed to try 3 custom cocktails that were exceptional too!
Food, decor, ambience was fantastic. The wait was a little long for the food but worth the wait. What a great find.
The Specialty Rolls and classic maki were outstanding.
The food is not tasty and overpriced
Niu is my go-to spot for dinner when I bring trainees in from out of town. They love the variety of menu options and the service is always very good.
Muy buen lugar
Sushi was very good and service was fast. Only real negative was that our waiter, a younger male, was not very welcoming. He seemed like he didn't want to be there at all, didn't try to make any conversation, and overall just short, to the point questions and comments.
Japanese food was great, Thai dishes not so much.
Sushi was not god. Too rubbery. Rice was not fresh. The place is very pretty and service was fine. But sushi need to be very good to be good!
We love Niu. Visit there whenever we are in Chicago. Often very noisy and hard to talk.
El mejor sushi de Chicago
Beyond disappointing. The service was slooooow! Food was ok.
I’d only heard amazing things about Niu from my co-workers. Perhaps it was just a matter of being short-staffed? But without explanation? They receive no benefit of the doubt.
My kids know this place as the “slow place”.
Food was good, service was good, overall atmosphere was very nice.
Our service was terrible. We waited 15 minutes for the server to take our drink order. Our appetizer came out 4 minutes before one of the entrees. The second entree did not come for another 20 minutes. Tables that were seated and ordered after us were served before us. Food was tasty though.
Food was good, but not great. We had a selection of rolls and the rice was a little over cooked. Great service and a great sake recommendation from the waiter. Overall, god experience.
We had several dishes and each one was extremely tasty. The waiter was very helpful and was appropriately attentive. We sat in the back area, which allowed the five of us to have conversations across the table. I would suggest noting that the curry dish was quite spicy ( even too hot for those that eat spicy food frequently). I would definitely return, next time we’re in Chicago
Went with business colleagues. Good food. Great service. I’d eat there again.
It was a lovely dinner and evening. The only reason for the low marks on service and ambiance was that we were never asked if we wanted another cocktail and it is very dark. A bit more lighting would make it a bit more enjoyable instead of having to use an iPhone flashlight.
We would recommend and return for the delicious cuisine!
Niu is an amazing Fusion spot. We celebrated my birthday here and the relaxed minimal decor and ambiance reflected the thoughtful elegant atmosphere. We had the Lobster soup, crispy calamari, seaweed salad, and several maki rolls, all were excellent. Great value and superb attention to detail as well.
Amazing food! We will be back when we visit again!
It's a very nice place. Great selection. Nothing we tried was 'outstanding' but nothing disappointed either. Would definitely go back. It's a "Can't go wrong" place with a great setting and environment.
Niu is always a great meal! They have wonderful happy hour specials too. Love the lychee Martini's! Always very accommodating. Thanks!
Ate at Niu twice in the past few days while in Chicago. Good food. Slow service. Server on second visit was not a bit friendly or even pleasant. I'll come back for the food and cocktails, but hospitality can be taught.
Great place, nice atmosphere, sushi is outstanding!
Couldn’t be happier with our entire dining experience
I was disappointed. I have a higher expectations for a Asian fusion restaurant in Chicago. Calamari was average. Rice noodles were good.
Everything we had was good.
The interior is a bit on the dark side. If it’s nice outside, you might opt to sit outside.
