NINJA NEW YORK Ratings and Reviews
Still enjoyable but I think the novelty has worn off and the food quality was less than stunning. Overall - would only go if I needed a venue for a kids birthday or something so out of the box that it could be fun for a drunken night out. It's not about the food and the "tricks" were just ok.
PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU'RE PLANNING ON EATING HERE FOR A SPECIAL OCCASION
At first, taking the elevator down and traveling through the "tunnel" to get to our table was exciting. But that was probably the only thing exciting about this whole place. All the waiters that were supposed to be in character as ninjas were lackluster and seemed bored and as if they didn't want to be there.
Each entre with a special symbol next to it was supposed to come with a "ninja presentation" and we ALL ordered those except out of 5 meals only 2 of us got "ninja presentations" and they were stupidly boring. The magician did a card trick and that thing where you tie the string around a ring and WHOohoH it was never tied on the entire time. AND HE MESSED UP ON THE CARD TRICK. TWICE.
The ambiance was tacky and not as nice or as intricate as we expected to be. And the food was OKAY at best, it was nothing you couldn't get at your local sushi place if not worse. Except where where your bill would be $50 at ur local sushi place, at Ninja New York we paid a bill of $200.
Disclaimer: all of us are 18 years old and I would say that the very young children around us were much more enthused. And the waiters also knew it was one of our friend's birthday and they didn't do anything more special than the waiters and applebees would do.
Our visit to this location must didn't meet up to our expectations based on the website. Actually it was a big dissapointment. Food was of bad quality. Especially the soup, very bad... Prices are way too high for the quality you get. Didn't get a 'show', only some lame shouting.
Maybe nice for a childrens' birthday party, but not for a romantic diner.
We had a blast here for my fiance's birthday. The dining experience alone is worth the price of the check. The presentation of the dishes is super creative, and the actual ambiance of the restaurant has to be seen to be believed. The food was good, but what you're really paying for is the experience. A surprise favorite was the miso lobster bisque appetizer, which was delicious! This is a great place for kids or kids at heart, but maybe not for those who are easily spooked or particularly jumpy!
Experience was great and a really fun atmosphere especially celebrating something like a birthday. The service and the different ninja shows that they do a really unique. The one downfall is the quality of food, multiple dishes tasted funny as if they were cooked with some kind of chemical taste in it. The burger was okay, the ribs had a strange taste, the fries were over cooked, but the dessert (ice cream and cookies) were pretty good. If they could just fix the quality of the food this place would be excellent .
We celebrated our son’s 6th birthday. This was a perfect blend of great food, the perfect theme and a wonderful staff! They specialized menus along with all the additional effects really make this a fun and unique experience.
My sons love this restaurant - they are getting a bit older (14 and 15) - but still they wanted to go (again) when we decided to stay in Manhattan overnight. We've been four times and my wife is Japanese (born in Tokyo) so she is hard to please on themed restaurants - but loves it. The ambiance and service are fun - with ninja magicians - and the food (if you choose well) is very very good for a place designed mostly about fun and theater. It may be me, but there seem to be more western options on the menu than when we first went a few years ago - but you can still eat decent Japanese food. Good Japanese beer (Sapporo on draft) ... decent choice of sake (we stuck with beers).
When my wife offered to translate the writing on the menu card (it's a quote from a very old Japanese poem) - the New York waiter already knew ... and knew where it came from ... impressive training. Arigato gosimasu
Was our first time and we just went to see if it was as good as we had heard it was.... it was even better! Surprises await from the staff and throughout the meal. Loved the magician at the end as well. And the food was surprisingly delicious (you don't think theme places will have food as good as regular places, and the food there was better!)
Worth the trip downtown, even without kids!
Had been to NINJA years ago for a client dinner, so when my boyfriend was in town, thought it would be a fun experience to try again. Well this time, we were seated in what can only be described as the Kids section, which had none of the ambiance of the rest of the restaurant. The food choices were pretty limited and very tourist-y. Since we knew we didn't want to stay, we just ordered some sushi rolls (quality of what you'd get at a take-out spot, but WAY more expensive).
The kids and families around us looked like they were having fun, and the servers were all very nice, but overall, things have definitely changed since the last time I was there.
Understanding that this is an entertainment event as much as it is dining. If you are looking for authentic Japanese cuisine this might not be the place for you. The menu was simple but good. The real attraction is the ninja village decor and the server ninja costumes and fun for the kids. The sushi was good. Miso soup was good. Their greater menu seemed to cater more to American pallets.
This restaurant definitely was unique, set underground with Ninjas jumping at you when you least expect. A magician came to your table and entertained as well. The food isn't cheap, though not extremely outrageous...and you CAN share! That makes it much more reasonable, and less waste of food. The only negative was they were clearly trying to move you along and make room for the next party. As we took the first bite or our appetizer, our meals came out. We met in NYC as a central location to Long Island and NJ...and were not able to enjoy time together and relax. It was in/out. At least while we were in, it was an interesting and tasty experience.
If you have not tried Ninja. You MUST! FUN, energetic dining experience with outstanding food and fantastic, attentive service. We will go again very soon! A truly entertaining dining experience. And the magic show at the end blew our minds! (bring cash tip:)
