The food was delicious but VERY small portions which is expected at such a restaurant. However, I was disappointment because our waiter said almost everything could accommodate a gluten free allergy but the two things I wanted on the menu couldn’t be. The staff needs to be more aware of allergies. Overall enjoyed the restaurant.
We went to dinner here before seeing a show. I considered ordering the trout, but it was described as having garlic which I cannot eat. I asked the server if I could get it without garlic and she said "I don't see why not." Of course, my dinner arrived with garlic. Then, it was too late to really order anything else and have time to eat it before the show. The maitre d' offered me scallops which I don't like or fish tacos which he said could be done in 3 minutes. I got the tacos and they were blackened and too spicy for my taste. He could have mentioned that they were blackened. All in all, very disappointing and we won't be back.
We had a wonderful preheater dinner , delicious small plates . Perfect blending of taste and portions . Great wine list .
Food was outstanding. Tomahawk steak was beyond perfect. Service - Ziggy, specifically - made our anniversary extra special.
Fun, creative menu...excellent service from our very knowledgeable server. Smaller plates and entrees all good. Try as many as you can. Skip the desserts, very weak.
Wonderful and delicious. The service was excellent and sensitive to our curtain time. Only issue was that we were seated next to the kitchen and thought the view was good, the smoke was rough for me. I noticed that there was a fan but it was not strong enough to divert the smoke.
the staff was great and they constantly update their menu
Excellent ambience and service. Great menu and presentation. Joe is a treasure.
Went before a show. Nice atmosphere and friendly waiter. Very long time between first and second course (at least half an hour). Excellent squash bisque; halibut entree - fish cooked well but overall dish was bland; mushroom risotto was fair; cake dessert was cold & hard, seemed like it was/had been frozen not fresh, not worth the $10 cost. Also not much on menu for vegan /vegetarian diners.
Wonderful. JP the waiter was exceptional.
Great service, waiter got us out in time for concert, food was creative, very good, small portions.
Great bar, friendly staff, excellent food, and great service... We really enjoyed our time there...
Our food was all superb. We started with a butternut squash bisque that was probably the best such bisque we've ever had. Our entrees were both excellent and the dessert was wonderful. Service was extremely attentive and friendly. The diversity of items on the menu is impressive, and this one of the few restaurants we've been to recently where there were more than a couple of items we wanted to try, and the prices are very reasonable. The wine list also had a nice selection at affordable prices.
Service was a little slow, especially drinks from the bar. Something that was a little odd was being told we should use our spoons when I requested forks for dessert. The food was very good, though.
We had dinner before PPT. The service was prompt and informed. We loved the menu. The food was very tasty. We would definitely return.
I have been to this restaurant many times over the years and I have to say it seems that it is not the establishment it once was. The service was very spotty. It took 20 minutes from the time I was seated to finally being acknowledged by a server. Once our server got there he was fine but when you go out of your way to schedule dinner before a show so you do not have to rush it defeats the purpose when 20 minutes of your time is eaten up by being ignored. The food has gone from being excellent to simply serviceable.
Sorry to say we had very poor service and the food was mediocre. Ambiance is nice but I would only go back there for drinks at the bar. Ordered cocktails before dinner and it took 15 min to get to the table and I had to ask a second time.
Dinner was lovely - a restaurant in which a conversation can be had while dining is often difficult, but Nine on Nine was great. We thought we found 'A Find.' My dining partner and I chose a simple pre-theater meal of beet salad, sliders, and oysters. All were yummy. Beer and wine selections were good too. Service was friendly and efficient. BUT - and yes there is always a BUT - we returned post-theater to resume our discussion at the bar. Well what a surprise. What had been a bright and energetic scene transitioned into a dark and disco-star-light scene with LOUD music blasting. What a mistake. We shall return to the dining room. But not as often as what we originally had thought not wanting to risk walking through the pick-up joint atmosphere at the bar.
My food was cold. When they took it back to heat it, it was still cold. The restaurant is expensive but the food is not great. Too bad.
We enjoy eating here before the ballet. I had the lamb chops - done just right. My guest had the halibut. The dessert are great & change often. Try the truffle pomme fritts - delicious
Nine on Nine is our go-to place for pre-ballet dinner. While other places are loud and difficult to have a conversation, it is easy to hear your friends at the table. Request the tables along the window if it is a date night. The people-watching is always part of the fun. We started with the Cheese Plate. The 3 cheeses were very tasty. What made the plate extra special were the accompaniments---honey, mustard, fruit, pickled vegetables, olives, etc. We also had the Autumn Soup (pumpkin and squash). Loved the creme fraiche and ginger. I ordered the halibut and my date ordered the beef. The fish was tasty. Unfortunately it was also a bit cool. This is an issue I have had recently when "savoring" a meal (not only at Nine-on-Nine). The waitstaff brought the food as soon as we have finished our appetizers, but it seemed as if it had been sitting for a while. We will return again to Nine-on-Nine. It isn't an inexpensive meal, with the wine, but the food is usually very good.
Everything was very good except for it took about 40 minutes to get our dessert after desert was ordered.
We like to share dishes and sample the great food on the menu. The staff encourages this and it is a fun dining experience. We love the wagu sliders, lamb lollipops, fish tacos and ceviche.
We were extremely impressed with the overall dining/ bar experience.
The only thing that sticks in my mind about this restaurant was the service, the worst I've ever experienced. We, my husband and I, waited at least 10 minutes before anyone asked if we wanted a drink, which we did, and then it was literally a half hour before they came to the table. Does it really take that long to pour a glass of wine? The waitress explained how busy the bartender was and that she finally had to make our drinks herself. Considering there were only 3 other tables being occupied aside from ours it was hard to imagine how busy she could have been. We finally ordered our food, starting with an appetizer of the heirloom tomatoes. After 10 minutes the waitress returned to say they were out of the tomatoes, so we ordered some olives. Another 10 minutes at least to put some olives on a plate. The entree was good, but I was so disgusted at that point to care. We were offered a complimentary dessert, which we didn't want to wait for, but they did give us the olives for free.
Great food and Great service - would recommend to anybody looking for a great downtown dining experience.
great service - the waiter was extremely polite great food! -they made brussel sprouts even taste great :)
I went based on the recommendation of an acquaintance, and didn't know what to expect other than very good food (which I got). The menu is robust, and the options are broad enough that everyone can find something they will love, but not so broad that it dilutes the quality of individual dishes. The options were cohesive and complimented one another very nicely.
Everything was honestly amazing. Definitely worth going to for both food and drinks. Waitstaff was awesome.
Scallops were cooked just right, as were lamb lollipops
Our dinner was delicious. The menu has been updated and the choices are great. Unfortunately, service was really slow: It took a long time for our waiter to greet us; we had to ask for water; my husband asked for fresh ground pepper for his salad he was missing a knife to eat his pork chop; and we couldn't order dessert because we had to get to a show. Unfortunately, it seemed that they were short staffed. We will definitely go back but make an earlier reservation to allow enough time for dessert!
Were left without taking drink order for 20 minutes after arriving. Were told by server that 2 servers had called off. After 5 mins server came back to tell us Bourbon we ordered for Manhattans was out. 5 mins later brought the Filthy Martini for one in the party and it was made incorrectly. Later a second Manhattan was served up instead of on the rocks. Sums up the whole meal.
The server did an outstanding job of dealing with the overload and kept up with us but we could hear complaints about orders/food from other tables. Will give the benefit of the doubt that this was just a one-off short-handed incident BUT will not return for a while to see if this is a trend (or if this is the beginning of the end for Nine on Nine). Have enjoyed the restaurant for years before theater so I hope it's the former not the latter.
Good atmosphere. Good wine. Went there for foie gras, which was spectacular the last time there, but they took it off the menu! Very disappointed!! Filet was perfect but the vege, spiral zucchini and yellow squash, had absolutely no taste. The waiter was very good and cognicent of time since we were going to the theater. Ventilation system in the kitchen is poor. Both times I was there I came out smelling like grilled food. I’m being honest! I will go back because the food and service is very good.
Meal was good. Waiter provided detailed information about the menu items. The only downside was the service was very slow. The restaurant was not crowded but still we waited a long time for our entree.
the food was terrific. Our server was new but tried very hard. Only down side was the drinks - uniformly far below par......
There were almost too many people trying to make sure we had everything we needed. All of the food was excellent and great for sharing.
We have dined at 9 on 9 before with positive experiences but his time it was not good at all.
First, some items in the menu were not available even at an early dinner at 5:30 pm.
Second, the servers lack experience and make too many mistakes.
And finally, one item came from the kitchen with a fly in it...yes, an ugly fly in my veggies...
They apologized and offered us a free dessert for our next visit, but with so many options in the area, we are not going back for a very long time...
We were excited to return to Nine on Nine, our Pittsburgh stalwart, before going to a performance of the Opera. Being restrained, I must say that we were disappointed. The service was disorganized, with a drink order being exceedingly slow, and when received, was not what was ordered. In ordering appetizers, the roasted bone marrow was not available--a disappointment. So we ordered two orders of oysters. Though the oysters were delicious, but when the kitchen opened and separated the oyster from the shell, many bits of shell were mixed with the oyster, making chewing it perilous and uncomfortable. I had never experienced this before.
The scallops were good--nicely prepared and presented. The certified Angus beef dish was overly pounded and overcooked--it looked like a big White Tavern hamburger without the bun or pickle.
Dessert--the crème brulee--was excellent.
It took a long time to get our check--our server seemed to have disappeared or gone on break. Even after giving the long-lost server my card, it took about 5 minutes for the check and card to return.
The restaurant is so close to the theatre district that its convenience is a plus. On the other hand, one experience like this is too many.
We have frequented this restaurant but this time Disappointed in entree serving size. 3 medium-sized scallops and no accompaniment. Even with a starter course not adequate dinner.
Gnocchi entree also meager. Too expensive for no meat or seafopd
This was our third time eating at Nine On Nine and we continue to be impressed with the staff, the food and the service levels.
We both had the Halibut and shared a side of the Brussels sprouts. Both were great. From a previous trip we can also recommend the tomahawk pork chop as well as the desserts!
