Contemporary American

Welcome to Nightwood. Jason Hammel and Amalea Tshilds, owners of Logan Square's Lula Cafe, invite you to join us in Pilsen -- at our open kitchen, on our patio, in our wine room, with the warmth and fragrance of applewood scenting the air.

We are a farm to table restaurant, featuring local produce and sustainably sourced meats and fish on an ever-changing, handwritten menu.

Spit roasted chicken, whole slow cooked pork, squash grilled over the open flame, a simple bowl of perfect fruit and sorbet. Hand in hand with the best farmers and craftspeople of the midwest, we cook with bold simplicity and care. We are looking forward to seeing you soon.

I'm sad that Nightwood is closing. It's one of my favorites in Chicago. I'm so glad I got to dine there over the years and to check it out one more time before closing. The meal was delicious and the whole experience was delightful - as expected. Good bye, Nightwood. I look forward to patronizing Jason Hammel, Kevin Heisner, and Matt Eisler's next project!

I love Nightwood. It's a go-to. The brunch menu is well balanced, every single food item is well-thought out but not "bougy" as I would like to call it. It's foodie brunch, in an authentic manner. The smallest details matter at this place, from the awesome coffee - to the staple donuts. It's just different yet real. The atmosphere is relaxed, the outdoor area is unique and not crammed like most brunch places. Their drink menu is amazing - they have a full bar with an excellent selection. Sad to see you go Nightwood, I will miss you.

Sad to see Nightwood close its doors next week, but hopeful that the next chapter will be every bit as good as the restaurant we have come to love.

Really enjoyed our first visit to Nightwood. Very eclectic looking space, comfortable and more casual than I expected. It took an unusually long time for the server to greet our table and take a drink order, but after that, the service was friendly, knowledgeable and on point the rest of the evening. We shared the crispy sweetbreads and lamb tartar to start. Both outstanding. Entree were the trout & chicken. I didn't try the chicken, but the trout was delicious. Had a really crunchy texture on top, the fish was perfectly prepared. We also had a side of their radishes, which were nice. Butterscotch custard for dessert was tasty, but would try something different next time.

I went here for dinner and we started out with the oysters, steak and trout as our entrees. The oysters had this salty taste during each bite but did not overpower the rest of oysters. Steak was just the best with the sauces and it was my first time having trout. Bones were removed and the crispy black rice, just super yummy!

I have now been to Chicago three times in the last 5 years and I have been to Nightwood four times for dinner. My friend lives a few blocks away and is a regular there so we have gone there three times together. This trip he was away but I knew I couldn't visit Chicago and not have a meal there. I was not disappointed. I took my boyfriend on our first night . It was cold and rainy out but the restaurant was warm and inviting. Everyone was in good spirits. Our server, Sara, was sweet and accommodating giving us all kinds of information about the neighborhood and other places to go during our stay. The food is always delicious. There is a variety of seasonal starters. We love their buratta. It really is hard to decide what to order. Definitely go hungry and share many plates! The main room was beautiful with big windows looking out onto the rainy street scene. The patio also offers a comfortable ambience...great for warmer weather. Next time I want to sit at the kitchen bar and watch the chef and crew.

My parents and I visited this little gem of a restaurant. When we walked in, my eyes were immediately drawn to the bucket of rose wines and I knew this is my kind of place. They had a special menu just for rose wines. We started with the burrata and oysters. The burrata with lemon, pine nuts, asparagus & dill was absolutely delicious. The oysters were good too, but the burrata stole my heart. I had the chicken for dinner, which was very sweet & spicy & had a ton of different textures. It is definitely for the starving diner as 1/2 a chicken was more than I could eat. My parents ordered the hanger steak & trout & both locked their plates clean. Overall, we had a great experience & will try to come back next time we are in town.

The restaurant world is saturated with 'New American' cuisine at the moment. I am generally reluctant to dine anywhere that is categorized as such, because I find, in general, the food is over salted and doused in butter or animal fat--the food isn't given enough thought or respect. Nightwood lets the ingredients speak for themselves, and had atypical variations on standard 'New American' menu items. I was really, really impressed. Will return the next time I'm in Chicago.

We arrived 30 minutes early for our dinner reservations and was told of a local bar that would serve us a cocktail. It was a bit of a dive but fun! Knighthood opened promptly at 5:30 per our reservation and we were seated in the covered outdoor space. Service was prompt and efficient with the food coming out as expected. We had a few appetizers and wine to start the meal. Three of us had the hanger steak while the rest had the trout. The trout was the better of our two options. We need to order a taxi which the restaurant did for us without worry. We arrive at the Goodman Theater for our show on time and full. Good dinner I would recommend as a good foodie experience but won't plan on returning if only due to the number of good restaurants in Chicago.

Nightwood continues to delight & engage your taste buds with seasonal offerings. The kitchen is a pleasure to watch as this powerhouse of talent plates appealing textures & flavors for you to share or savor all by yourself. Nightwood's comfortable atmosphere is the perfect place to sit at the chefs counter or at the bar to enjoy what might be the best hamburger & fries offering in Chicago. The comfortable outdoor patio is a perfect place to kick back & enjoy one of their creative cocktails. The Burrata is a not-to-be-missed starter, the fresh spring flavor of mint compliments the pesto / cheese / cracker bread. Save room for dessert! Service is friendly, knowledgeable & professional - paced by you. It is an easy, relaxed vibe. Make your reservation soon.

I wish the restaurant was more vegetarian friendly, I realize they're not aiming for that but always nice to have a few options if you're going with a group and few of you are vegetarian and don't end up having to order the same and possibly the only thing on the menu... And NO, fish is for Pescetarians, not for Vegetarians.

We really enjoyed our dinner at Nightwood, at times it was sublime. The very fresh ingredients were prepared to perfection. I had the house made spaghetti appetizer and it was perfectly al dente and very tasty. The chicken was amazing, the asparagus perfectly cooked, the wine list was good and the service was wonderful, understated and smart. The plate of cookies and coffee topped off a perfect dinner. You will not be disappointed at Nightwood.

We are glad that we discovered this restaurant. The food was innovative and delicious. They are conscious of sourcing and the dishes are noteworthy. The service was wonderful; recommendations when followed were spot-on. At first we were seated at a somewhat dreary spot in the restaurant. Then, the maître d' was very polite about letting us choose any seat in the house. Really, this is a great spot--unassuming and yet fantastic. I have found that so many foodie, innovative places are overdone and have a distinctly non-diverse clientele, which becomes unappealing to me.

Been many times to Nightwood, but the cheeseburger on the menu was absolutely awful. Ordered medium rare, got extra well done. Tasteless, dry, and, believe it or not, tough. Worse than McDonald's and Burger King. Carrots side dish was OK as was my friend's roasted chicken.

Love this place. Have only been for lunch, but Nightwood never disappoints. Took my mother for Mother's Day, and she ordered the burger, which was delicious. The only problem is that the tables are way too close, which seems to be the trend nowadays. One of the waitresses bent over right over our table, which was not appetizing. Hopefully, they will address it. Also, the doughnuts are excellent.

I was looking for a perfect location for a gathering of colleagues from all over the world (about 30 people) in Chicago. Most of them happened to be foodies. Nightwood turned out to be a perfect location, as it is not located in the touristy downtown loop area, but rather in an older neighborhood. Chef Jason and his staff were exceptional in making all the accommodations for the group in the downstairs private meeting area. The food and wine were exceptional. The entire group was pleased.

I had seen write-ups on Nightwood and have been meaning to visit the restaurant for some time now. Living in Little Italy, I have so many good options on just Taylor, Randolph, Halsted, or Lake streets for dinner out with family or friends. I finally got my chance Thursday evening to try Nightwood and everything worked so well (reservation thru Open Table, parking on the street, got seated immediately, great service, very good food - enjoyed the in-house baked bread, endive salad and wood grilled trout, nice wine list, nice space), that I have already made another reservation for dinner at the restaurant with even more friends. Of course the food is good, but what I especially appreciated about my experience was the space and noise level that actually allowed my party to enjoy the beautifully plated dishes which combined so many unique but tasty ingredients. The restaurant was near full inside, but the noise level did not impede the conversation at our table. We were seated in a booth, which was cozy, but there was more than enough room for all of us to 'spread out.' I liked that there was a warm, rustic vibe to the atmosphere and food, but that this was accompanied by polished service.

Had Sunday brunch with a couple of girlfriends. We were about twice as old as the other diners, but the staff made us welcome and were attentive throughout. The noise level was high when we got there, but we were able to converse, and after a n obnoxiously loud party in a nearby booth left it was a much more pleasant but lively vibe. The food was terrific - we split the two donut "appetizers" - a lemon curd filled and a maple iced with bacon crumbles. They were wonderful. The handmade tater tots were crispy and delicious and I had the polenta with braised short ribs and soft boiled egg. It was messy and delicious! The only thing I was less than impressed by was the Bloody Mary - not enough horseradish and a little light on the garnishes (what? No olives?)
