This was the worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant. The food was two hours late. The table was sticky. The waitress was scarce and overburdened. When our meals finally arrived, in random batches, they were cold and crusted over after sitting out. The meals were inedible. As compensation the manager (who did not come to our table in person) offered us a gift card, and he was still going to charge us 100% of the bill. We were there for a special occasion, and the evening was ruined. We declined the gift card, needless to say, no one from our group will ever return to Nico's Tacos again, but thanks for the offer.
I wanted to love it and it turned out to be ok. The food is not great, nor terrible. The service was fair and the house the restaurant is in is cool. To the restaurant: this is a great location, please work on the food to ensure this restaurant stays in the neighborhood. Everything was adequate which doesn’t cut it in the competitive Mpls market. The food is lacking passion and soul.
Fantastic tacos, great service and made from scratch margaritas. So good!
Love Nico’s! I recommend it to everyone. Food is always great, drinks are good and it’s a cute cozy little place for a fun experience.
Unique old house turned into a restaurant with a kick of character on the outside. It's too bad it doesn't carry into the food, it surely has a lot of potential in such a city! The prices of the food were disappointing because it really wasn't that great & we were wanting something good, it was a loss with a lot potential too bad for them.
This was hands down the best authentic Mexican food I have found in Minnesota. Our entire group loved it! A gluten free eater in our group as well and she was happy with her options.
Tuesday night reservation & they were pleasant and flexible when we called to say we were going to be late. Appreciated that they found a table for all 5 of us (most of the restaurants tables are not made for 5+, so it was very considerate).
No ambience and rundown. Not the type of place that appeals to me.
Great margaritas and shrimp tacos, small but extremely worth the time to stop by and enjoy their menu.
Great food and excellent service. The tamales are the best ever!
We like the variety of salsas. The veggie tacos and the fish tacos were both delicious, as was the cactus appetizer. Tasty margaritas, too.
While the food and drinks are great, and the members of the wait staff do the best they can, the management is absolutely abysmal. I made a 7:30 p.m. reservation about 36 hours in advance, and four of us arrived at about 7:35. We were not acknowledged at all for about five minutes (as the restaurant does not have a host), and when somebody did speak to us, he told us there was not a table available. Our reservation was listed in the system, which he showed us, but they did not have a table available. We waited for an additional 20 minutes, standing in the entryway. Nobody offered an apology, a drink while we waited, or even acknowledgment that we had made a reservation that was not being honored. We were finally seated about 30 minutes after our reservation time. Our server did not offer an apology, and when I asked whether the manager might consider comping our first round of drinks given the situation, I was told "no." I would love to love Nico's for the yummy tacos and great margs, but the total lack of acknowledgment and respect really put a damper on what would have been an otherwise great evening. I recommend you choose a different place for a fun dinner out in uptown.
Pretty poor service, ignored and no one seemed interested in really making us feel welcome or appreciated. Food was cold when delivered and who charges for chips! Too bad we were hoping for a nice evening.
Met up with a friend at Nico's for lunch on a Sunday. It was pretty quiet and we were seated immediately. We ordered Barbacoa, Chorizo, Pastor, and Pescado tacos. All were very good eats. I'm looking forward to going back on a Monday for 1/2 price Margaritas.
Our margaritas were tasty, as were the chips and guacamole. Surprisingly, for an early weekend dining slot, they were sold out of the squash tacos, so I ordered a quesadilla instead. It turned out to be a delicious second choice.
I've been to Nico's before but this night the service was not good at all. Our server never asked if we wanted drinks when we sat down and didn't seem familiar with anything on the menu. He did not come back to check how our food was either. Fortunately, it was delicious, as I expected it to be. It was quiet but the temps may have kept people home. Our table was cold as we were near the door. There were other options for seating that would have been better on such a cold night.
We were looking forward to trying a new Mexican restaurant. The food was very disappointing. It lacked flavor and was not authentic at all. The food wasn't even hot when it arrived at the table.
very comfortable and friendly, good food and service
I love this place. It is warm and cozy. The food is prepared with love.
The Carne Asada outstanding - tender and tasty. Margarita's are best in the city with 100% Agave. Alejandro provided an exceptional customer experience!
We went for restaurant week and we were not disappointed. We had margaritas and Carne Asada and the best Tres Leches I have ever had! We are looking forward to coming back.
We found Nico's on the Minneapolis/St. Paul Magazine website for Restaurant Week and the menu looked promising. However, once we arrived it was a different story.
The service was extremely slow. It took about ten minutes before someone brought us water and took our drink order. When the drinks came we ordered the chips and salsa to start. After fifteen minutes had gone by and the chips and salsa hadn't we decided to leave. We were there for a total of about 45 minutes and ended up going to Burch just up the street and had a great experience.
The only saving grace was that the bartender was smart enough to comp our drinks.
The food was only okay. The service was not good: we had to repeat ourselves several times and she often came back with more questions. Probably wouldn't come back as there are better bars and better taco joints.
Where to start? I think there may have been only one guy working. I made a reservation online using Open Table (had never been there before) - I was not "checked in" - which means I don't get the points. The chips were stale. The salsa "trio" for $8 was about 3 tablespoons each of mediocre salsa. There was a dried up chicken skin thing in our chips. Server was like - whatev. Brought more stale chips. The over-priced margs were horrid. The cheese quesadilla was soggy and literally dripping with - I don't know what. The street tacos were tasteless, lukewarm to cold and also soggy. The side of beans ($4 for about 1/3 C of beans) were most likely emptied from a can - unseasoned. The table was so sticky. Terrible service. Way overpriced, and to top it all off, this was supposed to be my birthday dinner with my kids. It *was* memorable in the worst way possible.
A great neighborhood gem. Just outside of downtown, this is a great place for a margarita and Mexican food.
The drinks are fantastic- a great menu of margarita options.
The food was delicious.
A bit tiny, so definitely use Open Table to reserve. The patio dining is the way to go.
Parking is very limited (street).
Food was just ok, nothing you couldn't find at any other Mexican restaurant. Our server was very nice but he only ended up being our server because whoever was suppose to take care of us never showed up. The place is in a old house and a pretty dirty one at that. The ambiance, well there is none and it's so loud you can't hear table mates. Lots of people outside which is probably the reason they are popular but even with reservations we couldn't get a table out there to enjoy what seems to be the only good thing about the place.
Chips could be warmed
Plates could be provided for chips and sals
Went on a Thursday night with some girlfriends for dinner and drinks-wasn't super busy and many tables were available inside (probably didn't need a reservation). Waitress forgot to put in our sides and I ended up getting my side of corn 30 minutes after finishing my tacos. We then ordered drinks and it took another 35 minutes for the waitress to bring 3 margaritas to our table. Food was pretty average. There are many other places in the city to get tacos and margs so I probably won't be returning to Nico's.
Went to celebrate girlfriend's birthday. The food was good and quick, unfortunately they were out of majority of things to make drinks so the drink options were limited! Was great!
I loved the food even though they only prepare tamales once a week. I looked at the menu before going and would have loved to known that before choosing that restaurant. I didn't like being seated right behind another table when there were so many other empty tables available for privacy. I will go there again now that I know what to expect !
They were to busy to seat us and recommended we went elsewhere because they were short staffed. We appreciated them being honest with us.
The margaritas were delicious and part of the happy hour deals. I was not as enthused about my tacos.
Went here for the first time to celebrate my birthday and was NOT disappointed! Our server was amazing, the food was superb, and the drinks were to die for. Amazing happy hour specials! Will definitely be back!
Great margaritas and wonderful tacos. Live the outside seating.
We were a group of 13 pre-theatre goers looking for a place to gather for drinks and nibbles on a Friday evening. Jason took great care in setting up a private space for our party, and Simeon crafted spectacular drinks for us. Food was ok, satisfied the diverse bunch that we were, and the service was really friendly and accommodating. Setting is a gorgeous repurposed Victorian on Hennepin, outdoor seating available, awesome tequila choices. Recommend the chicken nachos, enchiladas, and authentic (Mexican street) tacos.
It took 10 minutes for anyone to acknowledge us after we walked in, even though at least three staff members had seen us. The restaurant was empty yet everything we ordered took what seemed like twice the amount of time it should have. The chips were stale and flavorless, the three tacos we had were sloppy and soggy and gross. The edges of the tortillas were dry as if they had been sitting out for days. Overall this was one of the worst restaurants we have been to in Minneapolis, and it's an insult to Mexican cuisine. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
closed. We placed an online reservation for 8PM on Friday night We arrived and they were unexpectedly closed.
Very Yummy food. Everything we got was delicious. Only thing is that NO ONE could bring us the correct food. 4 different times we had to talk with our waitress about not receiving the correct food. She was definitely over worked and frustrated that her coworkers couldn't do their jobs correctly. The food we ended up getting (as close to our order as we could get) ended up being delicious and I would go back. They need to train their staff more, and get it together although.
We were a bit disappointed with our visit to Nico's. Our server was good, the tequila list was impressive, but the food was subpar. My tamale was nearly inedible.
First time going with my fiancé we both enjoyed our selves. Food was very fulfilling.
It was a limited menu and they only served tacos which were awful and a bite size snack not a meal. Left disappointed, however our server was very nice and great. I would give it another try on a different night.
