Nicola Restaurant and Bar Ratings and Reviews
Sometimes the service is sketchy, it started out questionable, but the waiter made up for the miscommunication about table assignments. Love the beet salad, however they eliminated the pecans :( and the menu is an adventurous combination of flavors. Disappointed only two Rieslings to choose from but it is an Italian restaurant. The owner/host is always so cheerful and welcoming. The bar menu is a good deal.
I've taken my dinner group to Nicola twice, and it's been a popular choice both times. The first time we had a group of about 20, the second about 4. Both times the staff accommodated us with friendly and accomplished service. The food -- I would call it N. Italian-- was great. I, totally accidentally, chose wine that the connoisseurs among us rated as excellent. One of the very best features, however, was how quiet Nicola was. If you'd like to have some great, light Italian food, drink a good bottle of wine, and have a conversation, Nicola is worth a try.
Outstanding service, Alex our waiter was very attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. We're already planned a future dinner and have requested Alex as our waiter. Food was terrific and the specials were prepared to perfection. This was our first time dining at Nicola's and both Nicola and Speranza made you feel like you've been a customer for years. Nicola's has become one of our favorite restaurants after only one visit.
I should have sent it back, what a total letdown the burrata appetizer was! No creativity whatsoever and the toast/bread (not sure what it was) was totally dry and tasteless. Awful. Why would a restaurant of this caliber serve such a mediocre dish? I wish truly authentic Italian restaurants allowed their customers to enjoy a meal like it would be served in the homeland too....slow...relaxed....our waiter was ok but too much in a hurry to move the night along. Fortunately, he was easy to ignore.
Great neighborhood restaurant. This place has it all...private and inviting patio, a decent size bar, party room, and of course traditional seating. The homemade pasta is "craveable". I love the Tagliatelle ai Funghi Selvatici Fettuccini, wild mushrooms & truffle.
Outstanding experience! Service was prompt and attentive. What really got my wife and I was how reasonable the prices were. Great food and great value all in one! Rack of Lamb was over the top and my wife's pasta was fantastic. True home made stuff and you can tell the difference!
We had a wonderful dinner and were able to eat outdoors, enjoying a beautiful fall evening. I had the cioppino, which in my opinion, is the best in the city. There were clams, mussels, calamari, shrimp, & fish in a tomato based broth. Excellent taste!! My other half enjoyed the spaghetti shrimp scampi. Very flavorful and again, excellent taste. Our server was attentive and very pleasant. The owners do a great job in operating this authentic Italian restaurant!!
We love Nicola's. Excellent service, friendly, specials are enticing. Fresh herbs grown by Nicola. We have pulled up to the restaurant and he is out there picking fresh herbs--he grows so much in such a small space. You are made to feel so welcome. Drinks are delicious.
Set up reservation for my husbands birthday. We live about 45 minutes away and wanted to celebrate somewhere other than Delaware. Not sure why I mentioned reason for the dinner, it was not even acknowledged. I also had scallops with veal...my cats nose was bigger than the scallops. Had to ask waiter if we were to get bread.. he blamed the help for us not getting any. Food was good, not sure if I would travel this far again to eat at this restaurant.
Our first visit to Nicola was very enjoyable for my wife and a friend. We were very pleased with the beet salad, our house-made pastas, our wine choice, and the desserts. Our server, Igor, was very professional, and was friendly and willing to chat when I tried out my Italian language skills. We definitely plan to go back.
Four of us had dinner during Dine Originals Restaurant Week. The service was odd from the time we walked in. One of us got there before the others and was at a table we couldn’t see from the door. We gave our names and the hostess said “Oh yes, one of you is in the corner.” She made no move to show us, so we had to guess but of course found our friend. Our server seemed to be the only one in the fairly large room we were in, and he was in a hurry to take our orders, but not in a hurry to bring them. During the meal, he cleared a plate next to mine and knocked over a partial glass of red wine that got a couple of spots on me, on the padded booth next to me, and on my purse. The server’s response was to say, oh too bad and bring me a glass of club soda and a napkin. Luckily there was no permanent stain on my clothes but no one seemed too concerned. He did bring the person whose wine he spilled another glass. The food was excellent and this wouldn’t stop me from recommending Nicola but the service that night was a negative.
The restaurant itself is very aesthetically pleasing. It's pretty small inside, reminded me of Figlio in Upper Arlington, and it's somewhat dark inside so makes for a romantic date night. The bar is also small and cozy and probably only seats about 8 people. We sat at the bar for a drink while they were clearing a patio seat for us. The drink menu is really good, and I tried one of their specialty drinks which was delicious! The outside patio is really cute and private with lots of flowers and herb plants. Our server was Igor who was nice enough but not overly friendly but that could have been because it appeared he was covering the entire patio by himself. What helped with the service somewhat was that the manager was going around to each table just making sure nothing was missed and checking in on tables which was definitely needed. The service was a little slow and it did take a little longer to get our meals but the food was fantastic! We ordered the Baratta appetizer which was this soft cheese, pecans and honey over a piece of toasted bread with a pear slice. They just need to bring a few more pieces of the bread with this appetizer. For my main course, I had the pasta with wild mushrooms and truffles and they added grilled chicken for me for the protein. It was superb! The only other complaint, Igor never asked to refill my wine glass nor water glass the entire night. He stopped at our table three times and never once asked if I wanted another glass. In fact, my husband had to yell out for him to come over to our table so that he could order another glass. I just wanted to see how long it would take him to finally ask me if I actually wanted another glass of wine but sadly he never did. That really surprised me seeing that that's where restaurants make all their money. All in all, it was a fairly good experience. The food was fantastic but the service definitely needs some work.
The food at Nicola was superb... probably the best lasagna I have ever had...even in Italy. For the quality of food and atmosphere, the service was subpar. Front hostess was talking to a friend at the bar for at least 5 minutes. Waiter was non attentive. Left large gaps of time between checking on us.
