Nico Ratings and Reviews
I have always liked Nico's but this time when I made a reservation a week ahead to go with a good friend they offered me the only choice of a table in the BASEMENT (don't do it!). When I asked for a table upstairs I had an hour wait …long enough to add an extra bottle of wine to the bill. I'll have to rethink Nico.
We went on a Friday night, obviously a busy time, and the restaurant was very crowded. One of us was seated right where waiters were continuously coming out of the kitchen with food or going down stairs -- tight squeeze. The service was very fast -- nice if we were in a hurry, but we wanted to enjoy each other's company as much as the food, and we clearly got the message that they wanted us to clear out to make way for other customers. Not the place for a relaxed meal. I had the homemade fusilli with shrimp -- light on the shrimp for $23 (4 shrimp in my serving!) but the homemade fusilli was delicious. My sister's saltimbocca was disappointing - covered in a gloppy gravy, and she left half on her plate. Very loud and crowded. We will not come here again.
First timer-website said there were gluten free options-and yes there are and kitchen is happy to work with you any way. We all enjoyed everything about this place-it is noisy-close quarters-wait staff is great. Waited about 25 min after our reservation to get seated-valet parking!
Nico was great! Food was delicious and the staff were very kind towards me. They were down to Earth and I was happy to learn some of their names during my time there. I went for a dinner date and it was my first time in the North End for Italian so it didn't disappoint. Some of the staff didn't speak English very well so it made getting water a little nuisance at times but it didn't ruin anything. Great vibes and my date and I had the window table so great ambiance.
What an excellent meal we had. I ordered the Ravioli Porcini. I asked about adding or topping it with some Prosciutto. Our waiter suggested (and said he had done it recently with Pancetta) I went in his suggestion & it was fantastic ! Outstanding flavor all the way around & my wife was very pleased with her Chicken Saltimboca. It was our third visit to Nico & we will keep it on our list of Go-To places in Boston's NorthEnd!
After looking at the menu and reading reviews, I made reservations at Nico over several other restaurants in the area that were highly recommended. We started with the arancini - delicious. Mushroom ravioli, shrimp with fusilli, and gnocchi were fantastic. The seafood special was jaw dropping. My husband had the meatball and spaghetti and although it was very good, he wishes he had been more adventurous. Service was attentive. Overall a very memorable Thanksgiving for us!
The pasta is perfectly cooked and the calamari had a wonderful tangy sauce. The wine list was interesting and approachable. Service was friendly and straightforward. The space was much smaller than we imagined so the seating upstairs is tight. I would never eat downstairs. It's a bit kitschy but comfortable at the same time.
The food was delicious, the servers attentive, and the atmosphere festive (and busy!), even for a Monday night. We had a large group for a special occasion and were treated to a few desserts to share for the table, which was an unexpected but welcome bonus.
As so many people have already stated, the guant meatball and fresh spaghetti rock! Out party od 3 had 2 of those and the other had the cioppino which was a fabulos pot of lobster, scallops, shrinp and tender calimari in a delicious broth over fresh fettucini. Just great. We also staryed with a delicious buratta and proscuito salas. SO good.
Our waiter, who was from Morrocco, was attentive but not intrusive. He gave ezcellent suggestions on both wine and food.
It was a great evening. The only reason it is an overall 4 is that we were seated 20 min after our reservation and that was hard for us. We had someone with us who is not able to stand for long and there was really not a good place to wait without standing and getting bumped by the busy waiters. I was glad that we were seated downstairs.
Food was great, great atmosphere. My only knock was we felt a little rushed; our plates were cleared and the check was deposited on the table. No offer of dessert. Several members of the wait staff kept checking on us from across the room to see if we were leaving, like they were desperate for the table. I’d still go back, though.
The food and our server were great but we had a 7:30pm reservation, got there at 7:15, and still had to wait until after 8pm to get seated. An explaination as to why they were running so behind on our reservation would’ve been great but nothing was said other than “we are running 30 minutes behind.” Once we were seated we had a great meal but my experience was definitely tainted by the wait.
Oh, the meatballs... they are just so good with sauce and ricotta on the side. The fresh pasta is amazing. The place is tiny and always jam packed, and even with a reservation you will probably have to wait. The wait can be uncomfortable because the place is so small that there is really nowhere to wait (except outside which is fine when the weather cooperates!).
This restaurant was exceptional. The food was absolutely delicous. We all got something different and the meals were all excellent. I wish I could remember the name of the waiter but he was fantastic as well . Had a great personality and was very educated about the menu! Will definitely be back.
My wife and I ate at Nico with a friend on a recent Friday night at 7 PM. As others have frequently mentioned in reviews...the food was very good, authentic Italian (which you should expect in the North End), the portions are large, the service is excellent, the space is small and it was indeed very noisy (vibrant, some might say), to the point that it was impossible to have an intimate conversation. Would I return? Absolutely, although I might opt for an earlier or later reservation on a weekday rather than hitting it at a peak time on a weekend night, as it was a bit chaotic, in the main dining room and the foyer/bar area. Ask for Hakim as your server...he was great. Ciao!
