Nicholson's Tavern & Pub Ratings and Reviews
We arrived to find that the hotel next door had just experienced a kitchen fire; so our table was literally aglow with the fire truck lights and sounds from the fire crew. That would have been alright had our server been on top of things. While she was friendly, she was not quick by any means; took close to 15 minutes just to be greeted at our table and served water.
The bread board app was delicious. My husband loved the steak & fries, my son enjoyed the shepherd's pie very much. I had the salmon which was wonderful as were the haricot verts, I subbed out the mashed potatoes for mashed sweet potatoes and they were cold. Again, the server never came back to check on us until it was time for the check. It was our son's bday so I encouraged him to get a dessert which she replied sure and it's complimentary.
We will go back; but it could have been so much better
We went there before our matinee Show at the Aronoff. This was my first time eating here for lunch. The menu was great. We had good service, our waitress was very friendly and helpful. The food was hot when it arrived and delicious. Would definitely return for lunch again.
This is one of our favorite spots to hit before seeing a Broadway show across the street. Great food, great beer & drink selections (we especially like when there are special "show" drinks that correlate to what's playing at the Aronoff) and the service is usually attentive.
We had reservations and got right in. I had the pot roast and my daughter had the pulled pork macaroni and cheese. The food was delicious! One downfall was that they were super busy and it took the server 10mins to greet us at our table. The server seemed to be so slammed that we only saw her once after we got our food and that was after we were finished eating. I ordered two bar drinks and they were very tasty! I would recommend this place to others!
We went to Nicholson's Tavern pre-theatre. We had been there before and it is very convenient to The Aronoff Center. We waited 10 minutes from being seated at our reserved time befor my husband had to flag a waiter. He was very apologetic and comped our drinks. The food was great per usual.
We're from out-of-town. Decided to eat here a bit early before going to theater directly across the street. 4:30 reservations. No crowd upon arrival. Quickly seated. Waitress very nice. Menu selection reasonable, but certainly not extensive. Prices mid range. Definitely reasonable. Food very good. Prompt service. Would certainly eat there again.
Even with the reservation we were placed at a table by the bar. It was a bit of a rush because the show had just let out. Service was slow, server was apologetic but still slow. One would think being directly across from the theater they would know better how to handle the rush. Food was good.
Have been to Nicholson's several times and always had a great experience. This particular evening I was going to the Aronoff and my nephew and niece were in town from Indianapolis for the show and dinner. My niece is a chef and was very pleased with the food and atmosphere. The food is always tasty and I love the themed cocktails that go along with the show. Will definitely return.
Food was great. Poor server was likely deaf and had been at Nicholson's only two weeks, he said. Everyone had at least one thing wrong with their order. We were in a hurry to get to the Aronoff and almost missed the opening of the play. It was my birthday, and he made a big deal out of serving my birthday dessert, then charged us for it! As we were running late, we did not even mention it. We will go back because of its convenience. This new server needs to be more "seasoned" to work at Nicholson's! Please!
We've eaten there many times some really good some not so....this evening it was very good except for how loud. This is the worst thing about eating there is the noise it's almost to the point you can't hear each other unless you lean across the table along with the person across leaning. Can't figure out why they don't address the noise, they have to know. I do know if you sit at the bar it's one thing but in the very back dining room there is no excuse. Now the food, the pot roast was excellent as well as the oatmeal crusted trout. You can't go wrong with either. My half portion wedge salad was very good but small. Our friends had the turkey burger that was good but the waiter never brought pickles he asked for. Overall it was a good experience but could have been a great experience if it weren't for the noise.
The location is perfect for play nights. They are prepared for larger groups on these nights. I love that they have specialty drinks for the play themes. And, the best part.....they allow booking through Open Table for groups larger than 6. The other downtown restaurants do not allow for more than 5 or 6.
The server we had was Scott ? he was very kind and helpful and guided us to the right choice. My daughter got salmon patties w/ mashed and the bread board and I choose a cup of tomato basil soup . My soup was delicious paired with a small piece of bread and it was wonderful. Her dessert was cheesecake with toffee pieces and looked magnificent!
I just want to take a moment to thank you for this amazing experience my daughter and I experienced together and it would not have been possible without your generosity, kindness and .... I have no more words to say just a hug!!
Thank you my Friends

This was only the second time we had been there. The food was good again. Our waiter was very good and friendly. The only thing was it seemed to take longer than last time to get our food. We were going to concert and felt rushed by the time we got our food. I think next year we will try to schedule an earlier time.
We went for dinner before the theater and the food was fantastic. I had Lamb shank that was the best I ever had. My wife, who us normally a light eater, had the roasted half chicken and finished it all. dessert was rum bread putting that just melted in your mouth. Service was great and the management was very attentive. we totally enjoyed our experience and recommend everyone to try them
The location was perfect -right across the street from the Aronoff. The hostess and staff were friendly and professional. Michelle was an attentive waitress. The food was fresh and delicious. They even kept our left overs until after the show. The only downside of the whole night was that the table was wobbly.
We were put in the back of the resteraunt with a draft and I had requested the room with the fireplace. Our waitress spilled a coke all over the table and left us for minutes to find towels to clean it up. We had to get up ourselves. We had to ask several times for drinks. Our appetizer was served cold. (Brie) It was sent back. We had to place our used plates and wet mess on an empty table. Nothing was offered to us for inconvenience. Waitress was sweet but terrible service for a party of 8. We would have stayed longer and had more drinks. Not sure I would return or recommend and we chose you over Maplewood in downtown. Disappointing!
We always go to Nicholson's for Christmas Eve lunch. They have the best fish and chips I have ever had ... anywhere, including the U.K. Shepherds pie is very nicely done. It's a good-sized portion,a little bit spicy. The pot roast melts in your mouth and is a very large portion ... even at lunch. The have a very large menu of single malt scotch and several beers on tap. I especially enjoy the Young's Double Chocolate Stout and the Fullers's. The ambience is cozy, especially in the fireplace dining room. The bar is large and impressive. The wait staff is friendly and helpful. Nicholson's is my favorite restaurant in Cincinnati when I'm in the mood to be downtown and have a casual, cozy meal with family and/or friends. Well situated for both the Aranoff and Taft theaters.
Good service from our waiter, but not so good from the kitchen. Problem with parts of the meal being served cold, while other parts were nice and hot. It took 30 minutes to get our dessert, but the waiter apologized for the delay and said it was on the house.
We have dined at Nicholson's many times. This time...I was disappointed. The service was lacking; they didn't bring our drinks until we reminded them and our soups never made it to the table. I know it was during the holiday season...so things were busy....but I was disappointed because I specifically came for the soup. All we got from the server was...I'm sorry with a smile.
