Horse & Barrel is an award-winning whiskey bar with 100+ whiskeys and bourbons, specialty cocktails, craft beers, small bites and a friendly bourbon-loving staff. Nicholson's Tavern & Pub Ratings and Reviews
Even with the reservation we were placed at a table by the bar. It was a bit of a rush because the show had just let out. Service was slow, server was apologetic but still slow. One would think being directly across from the theater they would know better how to handle the rush. Food was good.
Have been to Nicholson's several times and always had a great experience. This particular evening I was going to the Aronoff and my nephew and niece were in town from Indianapolis for the show and dinner. My niece is a chef and was very pleased with the food and atmosphere. The food is always tasty and I love the themed cocktails that go along with the show. Will definitely return.
Food was great. Poor server was likely deaf and had been at Nicholson's only two weeks, he said. Everyone had at least one thing wrong with their order. We were in a hurry to get to the Aronoff and almost missed the opening of the play. It was my birthday, and he made a big deal out of serving my birthday dessert, then charged us for it! As we were running late, we did not even mention it. We will go back because of its convenience. This new server needs to be more "seasoned" to work at Nicholson's! Please!
We've eaten there many times some really good some not so....this evening it was very good except for how loud. This is the worst thing about eating there is the noise it's almost to the point you can't hear each other unless you lean across the table along with the person across leaning. Can't figure out why they don't address the noise, they have to know. I do know if you sit at the bar it's one thing but in the very back dining room there is no excuse. Now the food, the pot roast was excellent as well as the oatmeal crusted trout. You can't go wrong with either. My half portion wedge salad was very good but small. Our friends had the turkey burger that was good but the waiter never brought pickles he asked for. Overall it was a good experience but could have been a great experience if it weren't for the noise.
The location is perfect for play nights. They are prepared for larger groups on these nights. I love that they have specialty drinks for the play themes. And, the best part.....they allow booking through Open Table for groups larger than 6. The other downtown restaurants do not allow for more than 5 or 6.
The server we had was Scott ? he was very kind and helpful and guided us to the right choice. My daughter got salmon patties w/ mashed and the bread board and I choose a cup of tomato basil soup . My soup was delicious paired with a small piece of bread and it was wonderful. Her dessert was cheesecake with toffee pieces and looked magnificent!
I just want to take a moment to thank you for this amazing experience my daughter and I experienced together and it would not have been possible without your generosity, kindness and .... I have no more words to say just a hug!!
Thank you my Friends

This was only the second time we had been there. The food was good again. Our waiter was very good and friendly. The only thing was it seemed to take longer than last time to get our food. We were going to concert and felt rushed by the time we got our food. I think next year we will try to schedule an earlier time.
We went for dinner before the theater and the food was fantastic. I had Lamb shank that was the best I ever had. My wife, who us normally a light eater, had the roasted half chicken and finished it all. dessert was rum bread putting that just melted in your mouth. Service was great and the management was very attentive. we totally enjoyed our experience and recommend everyone to try them
The location was perfect -right across the street from the Aronoff. The hostess and staff were friendly and professional. Michelle was an attentive waitress. The food was fresh and delicious. They even kept our left overs until after the show. The only downside of the whole night was that the table was wobbly.
We were put in the back of the resteraunt with a draft and I had requested the room with the fireplace. Our waitress spilled a coke all over the table and left us for minutes to find towels to clean it up. We had to get up ourselves. We had to ask several times for drinks. Our appetizer was served cold. (Brie) It was sent back. We had to place our used plates and wet mess on an empty table. Nothing was offered to us for inconvenience. Waitress was sweet but terrible service for a party of 8. We would have stayed longer and had more drinks. Not sure I would return or recommend and we chose you over Maplewood in downtown. Disappointing!
We always go to Nicholson's for Christmas Eve lunch. They have the best fish and chips I have ever had ... anywhere, including the U.K. Shepherds pie is very nicely done. It's a good-sized portion,a little bit spicy. The pot roast melts in your mouth and is a very large portion ... even at lunch. The have a very large menu of single malt scotch and several beers on tap. I especially enjoy the Young's Double Chocolate Stout and the Fullers's. The ambience is cozy, especially in the fireplace dining room. The bar is large and impressive. The wait staff is friendly and helpful. Nicholson's is my favorite restaurant in Cincinnati when I'm in the mood to be downtown and have a casual, cozy meal with family and/or friends. Well situated for both the Aranoff and Taft theaters.
Good service from our waiter, but not so good from the kitchen. Problem with parts of the meal being served cold, while other parts were nice and hot. It took 30 minutes to get our dessert, but the waiter apologized for the delay and said it was on the house.
We have dined at Nicholson's many times. This time...I was disappointed. The service was lacking; they didn't bring our drinks until we reminded them and our soups never made it to the table. I know it was during the holiday season...so things were busy....but I was disappointed because I specifically came for the soup. All we got from the server was...I'm sorry with a smile.
Server was good. But the whole experience was a bust, first the place was cold, my wife had to dine in a sweater and jacket, the noise level was obnoxious but that could be expected in a Tavern I suppose, the food was wretched, we both ordered the fried chicken, for a $52.00 meal, three small pieces of chicken, which were over cooked, the macaroni was cold as were the green beans. I’ve seen many posts since the beginning of December that they are experiencing heating issues.
My first time ordering the Fish & Chips. I've heard they were so good. Won't do that again.
Everything was cold. Two guests at our table had to send the fish back and ask for hot fish. The fries were cold. We didn't bother to ask for new fries. WE were cold. Apparently they were experiencing problems with the heat. They really should not have opened that day. We had reservations but would have gone somewhere else had they informed us. I don't think we'll be back. For the price and the recommended fish and chips item - our food should have been fresh and hot. All tasted as if they had been sitting around a while.
Typically we love Nicholson’s but Sunday we had an 1130 reservation before a 1pm curtain- at 1220 I asked our waiter about how long and he gave no eta. We finally talked to the manager who said everyone had come in at once before the musical and bengals game and they were behind. We had about 10minutes to eat. My son is autistic and doesn’t rush well. I guess the moral is don’t go during busy times.
We were seated in the back room and it was so cold. Our table was extremely uneven and nothing we could do kept it from rocking when touched. One of our bourbon glasses had a streak of something gross on it. And one of our appetizers was delivered to another table. Having said all that, our waiter, Cory, was fantastic and so accommodating given all the obstacles we incurred. The food was very good.
Was very disappointed in our visit to Nicholsons ...as the temperature in the restaurant was extremely cold. The wait staff informed us that the manager/owner was there earlier that same day and knew the heat was not working properly. It was too cold to enjoy our meal...and the waiter kept bringing us hot chocolate and warm cups of water to warm our hands.
