Nicholson's Tavern & Pub Ratings and Reviews
We had driven to Cincinnati from Indianapolis to attend a concert at the Taft Theatre, and we always try to find a moderately priced restaurant near a concert venue to enjoy before the show. We usually stick to Indy or Chicago for shows, and usually go to an English or Irish themed pub... both of us being part Scottish, we were delighted to find Nicholson's! The duck fat fries, housemade ketchup, and Scotch Egg were fantastic! (The Scot Brown and fried fish parts of our meal were fine, just not exceptional) Our waiter, Corey, was funny and attentive... we had a great time!
Always love coming to Nicholson's. it is one of my favorite places in Cincinnati. Service is always great, and the food is wonderful. We ordered two appetizers, and split the entrée. That was more than enough. We always like to go here before the Aronoff, and this just adds to enjoyment of the entire day. Highly recommend Nicholson's!
I was able to make a reservation online which was very convenient. My daughter and I are going to a show at the Aronoff. They seated us immediately, the waiter was knowledgeable and helped us make selections that we were interested in. It was awesome to be able to substitute side items that each of us wanted to try with our meal. The beer was excellent, the choices were excellent. We talked a little too much at the table and ended up having to get our check pretty quickly but the waiter didn't give us any bad attitude about that brought it immediately. I would highly recommend this place! It was an expensive dinner, but it was a special occasion.
Went on a date night. Atmosphere was excellant in the back room by the fireplace. Food was great and the prices are very resonable. Great customer service. Waitress had great communication skills. Noise level was excellent. We could carry on a good conversation. Overall rating for this experience was excellent.
The ploughmans bread board was amazing. It would be great to share before a meal or to eat just as a light meal. The Blood & sand cocktail was absolutely amazing. Very smooth, and just rolls over the tongue. And you cannot leave without dessert. The pot de creme is a must!
We were seated in the very back room. The room was extremely noisy and dark. It was my first time for dinner. We had to scream to speak with each other. We couldn’t hear the server, and she had a hard time communicating with us. We had to ask for our drinks after 5-10 minutes. We were asked to order our dinner before we received our drinks or APP. The entrees came before we were finished with our salad.... table not big enough for all the plates. It was very disappointing. I wouldn’t seat guests in this room for dinner service. We should have asked to be moved.
Visiting family member in Cincinnati and wanted a special venue for dinner. Have been to this location in the past and have enjoyed the food, the service, and the atmosphere. A good selection of beer/wine, in addition to favorite menu choices and ample serving portions. Will continue dining at Nicholson's and recommending to friends.
We had reservations at Nicholson's before seeing something across the street at the Aronoff. The server was extremely nice and helped to make sure we had our food, drinks and bill as quickly as possible so we didn't miss our show. (Which was our fault for cutting it too close.) Everything we had was DELICIOUS. The lamb burger was unique and melted in my mouth. We will definitely be back when we have a little more time to slow-down and enjoy...and have more than one beer!
My mother and I went here for dinner before a show at the theater and only had a bit of trouble when we walked through the front door. The host stand was behind the bar which took a moment to find. We were seated right away due to the lovely reservation app they have online. Our waiter did an excellent job with his introduction of himself and the restaurant. He offered the typical start of alcohol and appetizers but was not too pushy when we wanted to jump strait to dinner. It took a little why to cook but it was worth it when it arrived. Mom got the pot roast and it was absolutely delicious. I got the lamb burger and asparagus and it was also fairly good although I have had better lamb. For dessert we had the chocolate pot we creme and it was heaven! I will definitly be back and will reccomend to my friends.
I have always loved Nicholson’s for their great food and location to the Aronoff. But on Friday's it is not as nice and relaxing as other times. Our food and drinks were great, but the pacing of the meal made our table look like a pile up on I75. We were still eating an appetizer when the salad came and a few minutes later our meals. I was never offered a refill on drinks. Everything seemed to be hurried along. They were busy, but we had made reservations and were rushed out in less than an hour. Just not the atmosphere we were looking for that night.
This restaurant has never let us down, great food, great scotch , great service. It was my older brothers 60th Birthday, we could not have chosen a better setting or a better place to eat. We could actually hear each other speak without yelling, we will return!!!
The food was pretty good. My daughter an I always go before a show because of the signature cocktails. There has ALWAYS been a non-alcoholic version for her. When we asked about that, our server said NO and was obviously annoyed that we dared to ask that question. So we ordered water and asked for a minute. When he came back he said “I can make a black berry sprite”. We were never offered refills on drinks or water. I ended up chewing my ice at the end of our meal. He gave me the wrong bill at the end and when I flagged him over he said “I’m coming!” Again, annoyed. Not a good experience. We will most likely go somewhere else for the next show. If I want this kind of service I’ll just go to Taco Bell instead.
An overall very disappointing experience. I came into town to visit my mom and see Wicked and I made reservations at Nicholsons as we always do before a show. We were greeted by an unhappy and rude hostess in a nearly empty restaurant as it was still just before noon. The hostess immediately brought us to the very back room where it was awkwardly silent and cold. We told the host we would prefer to sit at a table towards the front of the restaurant where it wasn't so dead quiet and cold, and she rudely informed us that those tables were for reservations only.... after she just sat me FOR A RESERVATION. So we ended up having to sit at the bar even though I had a reservation and by the time we left there were still open tables in the front of the restaurant that we clearly could've been seated at. Really ruined the lunch and the terrible and rude services makes me feel like reserving a table at Nada for the next show we attend will be a much more pleasant option.
Food was good. I enjoyed the Scotch Egg. The haddock sliders were okay. Actually, one of the two was great, they other was not so great. A little tough and chewy. The themed drinks were excellent. Our server was wonderful, and the value was good for the part of town. I also adore that there is valet just outside the door. Wonderful benefit when you are heading to the Aranoff.
I think our experience at Nicholson's would probably have been a little better if we had sat somewhere other than a table in the bar. It was VERY loud, partly because the music was turned on so high. We could barely talk to each other. I had made a reservation a week before so I don't know why they couldn't have sat us in the dining area. We thought the food was average. My husband said his porkloin was overcooked. I had the shrimp linguine which was pretty good. Our server was sweet and the drink specials were fun. My daughter loved The Elphaba Elixir (We were seeing Wicked which was across the street). I really liked the dark woodwork and Scottish vibe. I would try I again but ask to be seated away from the bar.
This was not our first visit to Nicholson's, but after this experience, it might be our last. Our server, Charlie, seemed swamped by groups and unable to keep up with his tables. Our drink order was taken by another server and we received our non-alcoholic beverages fairly quickly. My soda was flat, but I did not get a chance to tell anyone until 15-20 minutes later when Charlie came to our table with my cocktail. He mispronounced the cocktail and spilled part of it down his hand. He then said that he would be back soon, but he did not come back to us for another 20 or so minutes. We were catching the show at 6:30pm, so when he did come for our order, we decided to skip appetizers and just order our entrees in the interest of time. I never got a refill of my soda, but my family did receive 1 water refill each. The menus (which are large!) stayed on our table for the first 30 minutes that we were there. I saw a manager collecting them and she seemed to be coaching Charlie, but she did not come to our table. We waited FOREVER for our food and other tables that came in after us were served before us. Charlie stopped by to say he would check on our order, but then approached another table and took their order. We had to wait for the bill and it was incorrect. This happened to all the tables around us and we all commiserated together. It was laughable, but super frustrating. Both large parties next to us insisted on just getting all the bills from him and paying at the bar. Our reservation was at 5pm and we BARELY made the 6:30pm show. He did apologize to us and thanked us for being patient, but it was such a bad experience.
Our food was great. Our service was awful.
The waiter had no experience with tables on a time line. The manager helped get our order in, but then we waited for the server to bring checks. He was the slowest.
Once he brought checks, they were all incorrect. I have been to Nicholson's several times prior to this. I have never received service this bad before.
We ate at Nicholson's Saturday before a show at the Aranoff. Our server was very good. She took our orders quickly, the food came out quickly and she cashed us out quickly. Just what we wanted. I also called earlier in the day to add another person to our reservation. I was delighted when he said I could. I figured they would say no since it was last minute and we would have to cancel our reservation. But it worked out perfectly! The food was great!
Great place to have a wonderful diner. Nicholson's Tavern & Pub has the best Irish food and drink. We love this place, it is only too bad we live so far away. We make reservations every time we come to the Aronoff for a show, and now is it expected. Love it. Tom & Beth
