Perfect for a date or friendly gathering ! You won't need to scream to be heard!
Great apps and main meal. Delicious wines by the glass as well.
No table available when i showed up. The lady didnt care about this even if i did reserve. They put us in a corner. Desapointed. Never will return . Food was really good.
It was super quiet when we arrived at 7. The table was ready and we sat down straight away. Our group of 10 arrived over the next 30mins but it took over an hour to get drinks by which time we were hungry too! Food was slow to come to start but was all delicious! We had the three course chop menu but it was not explained to us that this was the only menu available and why. It would have helped if this had been explained to us as some people were disappointed by the limited menu and I was confused as to why it was limited as when I had checked the website it had had a great menu, one of the reasons I chose it! The food was however very good and the cost was great! It took too long to receive our bill and we ended up having to go up to pay, which inconvenient considering we had 9 separate bills. I Would like to give Newtown another chance when the full menu is available and hope that the service, which was friendly and polite, is a little quicker when needed.
Food portions were really small. But the food was tasty and the servicwas great.
I've made a reservation two weeks before the date for a group, wrote a note saying that we wish to be at the patio. Did not get any response that we didn't have the spot.
When ready to order drinks, there was noone on the floor. Later, someone came out and had to shout to the back that we are ready.
Of course we waited for food.
After visit, I was surprised how other bars and resaurants are so crowded still. And soon I understood from the above service why it wasn't so at New Town.
For the price range, you would expect for more. At least a better communication.
Excellent food, great view, it's a shame that the music was so loud to the point of being annoying. Especially when the dubstep kicked in around 9pm.
I wanted to set up a special dinner for my girlfriend (now fiancée) as we were travelling from Toronto to Montreal . From the time I sent the email request to the restaurant to the completion of my dinner and engagement proposal, the experience was beyond exceptional.
Sigal Schafier the group coordinator reached out to me and helped plan the whole event, from the menu to how I would propose. She wanted to make sure that our evening was a memorable one. When we arrived on Saturday, she was there to greet us even though it was her day off.
The food was exceptional and the wine paring suggested was perfect.
The steak was cooked exactly how I requested and my fiancée's pasta was exquisite.
Sigal and Suzie were professional, courteous and caring and went above and beyond to make sure our day was a special one.
We could not have asked for a better place and perfect ambience to start our journey together.
thank you so much from the both of us
Visagine and Sanjay
The problem is that they do not share smorkers than NOT smokers and the space for each table (outside) is to close and it is no confortable to get good time.
Expensive for blend food with no taste. I don't recommend it
Very disapointed with your service since when we arrived at the restaurant it was closed. How can you send me a confirmation of my reservation to a closed restaurant!
I felt embarrassed in front of my american friends because of this!
I will neither recommand the restaurant to anyone nor your service!
If your salad comes out 20 minutes after everyone else has gotten their food if should be taken of the bill. Especially it was your only meal. When we say we are ready for the check we shouldn't have to ask 3 more times to get it.
We selected the restaurant because of it's location in relation to the F1 street party. Our visitors from our of town were thrilled to be in the middle of the excitement. However, we were very disappointed by the "forced" Grand Prix menu. We made the reservations weeks in advance and were not informed of the limited and very expensive menu. We were unable to eat off the regular menu and as a result over spent for the quality of the meal. The restaurant wasn't very busy possibly due to the street closures however it felt like we were over charged in order to make-up for the low quantity of customers.
The service was also lacking. Our waiter was a temp, 1st day on the job, who had never opened a bottle of wine. When spending over $125 pp, one expects a certain level of service. I understand that you needed to ramp up for the busy weekend however hiring quality should take precedence over quantity.
we were a group of 4, unfortunately, the waitress forgot my drinks twice and got me the wrong plate once. she offered us shooters to get pardon. This was probably the only bad experience we had and we will probably go back again, especially for the 5@7 where the drinks are 2 for 1.
I had to return the salmon because it was overcooked and also the side veggies were way too spicy ; it was impoosbile to eat that. The second plate was still very spicy and salmon too cooked again just less than the first one. They should get a better chef for that kind of 'fancy' place. Service was nice but not that efficient because not enough staff ; the view is really worth it and the terasse itself is very nice but that's it.
le personnel tres desagreable, la personne à l acceuil etait extremement rude, au vestiaire elle à mis mon manteau de vison et celui de mon mari un dur l autre pour ne pas utiliser 2 supports
au souper le personnel ne semblait pas vouloir etre present
We went there on a busy Friday evening during the holiday season of 2014. The online reservation process was easy, and when I emailed them with some questions I got a clear, prompt reply. I think the only disappointment was the area of the restaurant we were given: a small corner area by the bar on the 2nd floor restaurant with awkward sitting around a low coffee table. For a group of 15 there was no place to sit and frankly no ambiance. I think they could have anticipated (or consulted with me) to provide a more suitable arrangement. Thankfully we were only 8 and they could bring some extra chairs to create a sort of "living room" setting. Otherwise the service and staff were friendly, and the 2 for 1 happy hour prices fair. Overall it was a good experience for an office 5 to 7 but next time I will book with more time in advance so we get a place in the 1st floor lounge.
We did not order food so I can't offer a comment on it.
I wanted to take my staff out for a christmas lunch and thought Newtown would be a great place. I'd been there many years ago and has some very good memories. However, when we got there we were told that the restaurant ( upstairs) was open for dinner only so we had to sit in the bar area downstairs. Worst of all, apart from the three of us there were only two other people in the entire restaurant which made for a pretty depressing atmosphere overall. I actually apologized to my staff for my poor choice of restaurant.
My girlfriend and I had reservations here for the 20$ deal going on as part of Montreal's citywide festival encouraging people to try out nicer restaurants for less.
The waiter was fantastic. He checked up on our table regularly enough even though it was packed, the glasses never went empty and he made good recommendations.
We were seated right next to the entrance, so it was a bit uncomfortable having people buzzing by back and forth. I would have preferred better placement granted we had made the reservations a couple of months in advance.
Seeing as this was a type of new cuisine, we had the pulled pork burger for the main course. It was rich and very tasty, but it seemed a bit out of place for the venue it was being served in.
My meal at Newtown was such a disappointment! After walking through the crowd of smokers at the front door we went upstairs where the hostess offered us a table behind her station. I asked for another table and she said everything was reserved. I reminded her that I had a reservation and I had made it quite a while ago. We sat down and a few units later she said that she had another table if we'd like to move.
Wel were there for restaurant week so there was a special menu. None of the food was as described. The tapas was a plate of fried foods and fthe fish tacos were and over cooked flour tortilla with what might have been a fish stick inside cooked on a panini press. I wish I had more room but this was the worst meal in Montreal.
I have been several times to the Newtown. Since last time they have changed their menu, which is clearly redesigned to attract a different type of customers. The menu is less sophisticated and more sports bar type. I will probably not returned to this restaurant, since their is plenty of sports bar food around.
You may be tempted to book your group dinner here because they're one of the few that offer online booking but please don't make the same mistake we did. The service was horrendous. They pray on large groups as a chance to deliver inferior service and food.
We were not offered drink or food menus until asked. Took an hour for us to get a basket of bread and a bottle of watered-down sangria. Our waiter also dropped a bottle of wine on the floor and then proceeded to serve it to us. I ordered the pasta of the day with shrimp and when no shrimp were on the plate, I was accused of eating them. This place was a service disaster and took a good shot at ruining what was supposed to be a very special night. Do yourself a favour and go elsewhere.
Over all it was great from food to service to the nice ambience of the restaurant.. i celebrated my birthday there and we all had fun.. :)
I asked for a Sangria... Was asked if I wanted white, red or rosé? Answered RED!!!! Got white... sent it back.
Ordered pasta with garlic sauce, cherry tomatoes and parmigiano... Got fettucini in tomato sauce, 2-3 pieces of cherry tomatoes and did not see or taste parmegiano cheese!
Hubby got a burger... Undercooked, raw in the middle, had to send it back to the kitchen!
But the calamari were amazing!
So,... as for the food experience, not a place we'll recommand nor will we go back!!!!!!
I understand why no one eats there. Good in the summer thanks to the great terrace. Music is good. Stick to drinks (bottles drink) as their kitchen is clueless and ingredients are low quality and mix mayo into every single sauce. How can my sandwich be made with the same sauce that my fried calamari comes with?!? Above that, cheap mayonnaise is what they use a a base for their "home made" sauce.
BUT, the service and music were great!!!
We recovered at Maison Boulud. Thank God.
So yes, a 15$ sandwich can be overpriced if it's worse than a food court dead mall sandwich.
That is all.
The food was excellent. White wine was very nicely chilled. The table we were at had a bit too much sun glaring at us but overall I was quite impressed. Will be going back.
The table that I was seated at was to large in width. We couldn't even carry on a proper conversation. The food was good. The waitress misunderstood a few of the orders and forgot to bring one dinner entirely. Someone else had to order his beer twice before he received one. I wouldn't recommend Newtown simply because the service was not good. Other than that, beautiful restaurant and good food.
There was a large party on another floor so service was exceptionally slow. It took about 35 minutes to get our food after we finally ordered. I had a burger (which was slightly over cooked), unknown to me it comes with zero side dishes. Just the burger. Once my burger arrived, I ordered a side of fries which still hadn't come out by the time I was done my burger. Our server couldn't be found to cancel the fries order (since we were done eating and finished our wine).
Although to be fair, the service staff was accommodating and apologetic when I did eventually cancel the fries and there was no issue over the charge on our bill.
I would recommend checking to see if there are large private parties on the night you want to make your RSVP.
We came for the F1 and had diner on the Friday nite. The food was lovely, we had the seafood set menus basket. The white wine was not chilled tho which was poor form really. Went upstairs to the rooftop bar and the place was jumping if that is what you want. Did not really like the DJ music but it's all down to taste. Went to the bar on the ground floor and really enjoyed it there. Great bar staff and quick and attentive.
Don't go on Sunday
The good kitchen is closed.
Prior meal upstairs is great
Sunday it's just a bar with some ok food
Food wasnt great and waitress kept on spilling stuff but it wasnt a terrible evening.
Not sure i would go back
The food was excellent but it was almost impossible to get our servers attention for refills and to order.
Great location, great modern restaurant with just the right level of light, music and noise. Menu options are limited but you'll find something to please everyone. Prices are very competitive for the quality. Service was above and beyond expectation. Good job Newtown team!!
We went here for Valentine's Day supper and were very pleased with the food, service and ambiance. The prices were very reasonable for the quality.
The food is always great and this time was no different. The service was different this time though, it used to be that your server was good and friendly, our was extremely attentive, courteous and humble. Loved everything about our night.
We were a group of 16 ladies who were in town for a fitness conference. Needless to say that we were tired, and hungry!
The choices from the CHOP menu were awesome. Some of us had the cod which was melting in our mouths, and others had the veal which by some facial expressions were priceless.
The attention that we received from our main server was special. The others that helped were truly courteous and discreet. We were fortunate to arrive on time and have a quiet time in the restaurant before it became busy with diners that start their evening later.
The only downfall is that we all found the wine and drinks price quite high.
We reserved like last minute, they booked us anyways. We got there 5:30 sharp and they were changing the set up so we had to wait. We waited about 10 to 15 minutes, our table was next to the window so we had the crescent view. Never book a table at 5:30 on a Saturday night, we were the only customers. So the service was excellent ! We ordered cocktails, followed by our main dish, in between we had fresh bread and butter. 10 minutes later we were eating ravioli, burger and the short rib, the portions were Ok. My friend had like 6 raviolis in her plate, i had 3 asparagus with mashed potatoes and an average piece of rib, the burger was the only enormous piece. Dessert was Delicious ! Total of the bill for 3 around 145$ .
