Newport Grill - OP - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
Overall, it was underwhelming. The rainbow trout was bland and dry; the accompanying wild rice managed to be both soggy (the white rice grains) and unpleasantly crunchy (the dark rice grains).
The halibut was a nice dish- very creamy and rich. The bread and butter were good! So was the service.
For the price, I expected something much better than bland and dry. We won't be going back.
Service was not that great, not detail oriented. Did not tell sommelier the correct wine to bring, we had to ask for bread (that every other table had.) Saw the wrong dishes brought to multiple tables. Mussels were very fishy, did not seem fresh. Steaks were prepared perfectly. The dress of one hostess was WAY to short...looked like she should have been at a club. Wine list was amazing with good prices!
Good Calamari Steak appetizer. Service somewhat off.
We like getting there around 5:30 PM because their Happy Hour is 3 PM to 6 PM daily and they have $1 fresh Oysters on the half shell. But what I really wanted to try is the “Pastrami Spiced Gravlax” as an appetizer. Unfortunately, that was no longer on the menu. So as an alternative, I went for the “Calamari Steak”, which was quite good.
I had the “Loup de Mer” (formerly known as the “European Bronzino” on the menu). Unfortunately the chorizo in the dish was severely overcooked. However, my wife had the Alaskan Halibut which was wonderful.
I must say that every time we have been there they are not very crowded (I doubt that 20% of the capacity is being utilized). Possibly due to location, or perhaps a pricing issue. The service is normally quite good, albeit last night may have been an exception.
Overall, we really like Newport Grill, but frankly we think their sister restaurant Ya Ya’s is far superior.
Visited for Mother's Day brunch, which was incredibly disappointing. Server was completely disinterested in our experience and when informed that the inside of the water carafe was dirty asked "do you want another one?" Drinks came out well after everyone had been through the buffet line. Most of the most popular food (scrambled eggs, bacon) were empty and the biscuits were overcooked and hard. The selection was very limited compared to other restaurants of the same price range. On top of all this was that we were seated at an uneven folding table which belonged in a bingo hall. Newport Grill has obviously lost the ability to manage a quality buffet. It was apparent that they simply brought a buffet back for Mother's Day to cash-in.
The evening started with getting seated at the worst half booth table for two facing the back of the bar chairs. Considering this place was less than 30% full; obviously they did not want us to be seated at full booth or table top with only two people. I wanted to be seated at a different table but my husband didn't want to inconvenience anyone....
This really set the tone for a 3 star night.
We went to this restaurant for my Brothers 40th birthday. It was fabulous. They had plenty of room for our party of 9 (included 2 children). The menu was amazing. Dinner was perfect, as were small plates and desserts. Our waitress was wonderful. It turned out very well for us. We originally were looking at going to the Bonefish Grill or the Bristol and could not get in. That ended up being a lucky break for us because we discovered Newport Grill. Their menu was healthy and varied, several unique items that almost all were full of healthy ingredients. We will definitely be returning for future occasions.
Our experience began by being seated late despite have a reservation for two, then being asked to move by the host because a larger group needed our table. He was gracious, and we readily agreed. Then, after being seated at the 2nd table, we waited 10 minutes for our waitress to appear. Making a long story short, she wasn't there to take our order, replenish drinks, deliver the entrees, or bring the bill (roles completed by 4 different indivduals). However, we could see her converse for more than 10 minutes (we didn't time her, but it became increasingly obvious as we awaited our bill) with an adjacent table on the opposite side of the shoulder-high wall. This waitress experience was among the worst we've ever encountered. Unfortunate.
Used birthday coupon from sister restaurant Paradise Diner as they no longer serve dinner. No problem diners may simply order from the Paradise Diner menu as it's a shared kitchen. Staff were most gracious when they found out our 3 year old grandson was joining us for dinner. Our food was wonderful and the service was like always the best! Atmosphere is great. Menu diverse and prepared very well. One of our very favorite restaurants!!
Excellent Salmon & European Bronzino.
If you like salmon you will fall in love with Newport’s Scottish Salmon. We were there for an early (5:30 PM) dinner this past Sunday. I had their Scottish Salmon and it was perfectly cooked, and is served with fingerling potato, bacon, snow peas, spinach, edamame in a citrus beurre blanc. It was excellent.
My wife ordered the European Bronzino which is outstanding. If you have never had bronzino before this is must try item for your dining bucket list. We both had their House Salad because we love it. It has field greens, shaved brussel sprouts (which adds a nice crunch), radish, feta cheese, toasted almonds, & dried cherries tossed in a wonderful lemon maple vinaigrette.
We like getting there around 5:30 PM because their Happy Hour is 3 PM to 6 PM daily and they have $1 fresh Oysters on the half shell.
The service is very good and Newport has a nice atmosphere. It is not a large restaurant so I would recommend getting reservations.
Our Saturday night dinner at the Newport Grill was very enjoyable, primarily because of the great service and, of course, a seafood meal that featured a deliciously fresh filet of halibut that was the featured suggestion of the day. This is not the least expensive restaurant in Johnson County, but the quality of the food, the ambiance, and the excellent service make it a real value!
The service at this restaurant is that of a lesser priced venue. They haven't adequately trained the food servers or order takers. Service was very slow and poorly executed timing on drinks.
Food was "okay" but the entree' salads leave a lot to be desired. Mostly lettuce.
