Newell House Ratings and Reviews
Was in town for one night and had dinner with four friends. Hadn't been back to C-dale in almost 20 years since attending SIU. Was really impressed to see this caliber place in C-dale. Service was great, food was really good and drinks were strong. It wasn't cheap, but was worth it. I had the Chicken Piccata and it was excellent. Friends had steak, the salmon, tomato bisque, caprese salad and artichoke dip. I would recommend this place if you are looking for something a little bit more upscale in C-dale.
I was very disappointed to see that Newell House had an Eclipse Menu on Friday night, and that it only included one vegetarian entree. This was my anniversary date night, and we had been looking forward to a classy dinner in Carbondale. Nowhere on their website did it say that there would be a special menu for the eclipse. I hope to go back sometime and eat there, and hopefully the full menu will be available.
This is our second year spent for Father's Day at Newell House. Table of 8 with two young children. Service was fantastic. Food fabulous (I love the Mornay Sauce). Pricing reasonable. My family looks forward to eating Father's Day Brunch at Newell House. We intend to make it a family tradition.
We had reservations, but the place was fairly busy so we went downstairs and had a drink and appetizer while waiting for our table to be cleared. Once seated, the waiter was prompt with drinks and took our orders. Food arrived in reasonable time and was good. Waiter was attentive to our needs and overall this was a good experience.
We took our SIU senior and his friends out for a celebratory dinner the night before graduation ... the service was wonderful, as always, as the food superb. We were just sorry that the famous signature mushroom soup was not on the abbreviated menu. It is a classic dish! We love Newell House.
Our waitress was very nice and the reservations set on Open Table were very easy. We had a corner table set aside which is exactly what we wanted. Our food was not spectacular at all though unfortunately. I ordered the crab cakes and was unimpressed. The red pepper aioli over the crab cakes didn't have much taste at all. Presentation of all the items was nice except for the chicken pesto that my friend ordered. It looked like green baby food slopped over a piece of chicken. We had never seen pesto like that before. We all felt that our entrees were completely overpriced for what we received. A few more menu selections would have been nice as well. We had a variety of appetizers, stuff mushrooms, spinach artichoke dip and the potato cakes. The mushrooms didn't seem fresh and the stuffing just kind of plopped out of them. The spinach artichoke dip was fantastic and everyone enjoyed. The potato cakes tasted like shredded pre packaged hash browns and nothing more. Overall, the ambiance was nice but our food was just blah and not worth the price that we paid.
I highly recommend the Newell House. I made a reservation for a holiday/celebration dinner for my employees and their families a couple weeks in advance and it was ready to go when we arrived. The server was slow to get our drink orders at first, but other than that the service was great overall. Great atmosphere, friendly staff, clean environment, tasty food, and they offered multiple gluten free options (just be sure to ask first as it's not specified in the menu). I'd love it if the gluten free options were labeled on the menu. It was almost too loud to hear my table at first, but once some of the other tables behind us cleared out it was great. We all loved it.
We had always wanted to try Newell House. It was absolutely wonderful. Both the prime rib and ribeye were delicious and cooked to our specifications. The white chocolate bread pudding with bourbon caramel sauce was the bomb! It was the best dessert I have
eaten anywhere! Try it if you go, you will love it!
