New South Kitchen & Bar Ratings and Reviews
First of all my server, Kelsey, was excellent. Very knowledgeable about the menu including items not listed on the menu. She recommended a new appetizer, Andouille Hush Puppies that were amazing. I had Grilled Meatloaf and Mashed Potatoes. The meatloaf was exceptional with a demi glace that was superb.
Additionally I had a handcrafted cocktail, a Bourbon Honey Cocktail that was also excellent (I consider myself a bourbon connoisseur).
If you are in Charlotte, in the Matthews area, I HIGHLY recommend paying New South Kitchen & Bar a visit!
We've been to New South Kitchen several times for dinner, lunch and special occasions. Great menu and good service. Items I typically seldom order out I gravitate to here. Especially the meatloaf and chicken and waffles. Great bar selection and friendly and knowledgeable bartender. All said a great place for a laid back, enjoyable time.
My wife and I are very regular customers. The owner/chef Chris Edwards seeks local suppliers and the menu specials change daily. Always prepared fresh for your table the way you want. Usually he has a daily fish special which is always prepared a different way deliciously. We have dined at New South for over ten years. We keep on trying other dining places but keep on coming back to New South because you can not beat it!
We've been dining at New South Kitchen (aka Dakota's) for 22 years and have never been disappointed. Hosts and owners Chris and Sue are always cordial and the service and wait staff are truly exceptional. Food is creative, always freshly prepared, and pleasing to even the fussiest palates. Never had a bad meal at their establishment and look forward to many more dining experiences.
Table for 6. Kids meal for a toddler came out right away, which was great. Appetizers come quickly too. Once the appetizers were finished, it was an additional 25 minute wait for the entrees to come while the staff watched the Panthers game on TV. One seafood entree (blackend catfish) was cold. Not lukewarm, but actually cold to the touch. All other meals were very good.
Been goIng there for years. Love the location for us and farm to table concept. They have changed the menu over time and once had it al a carte. The menu used to be bigger and I think they may need to go back to that or at least expand the current menu. Service is always great which I appreciate. It is time for a makeover that is for sure. Need to update walls and decor. Will continue to go. Want them to do well. Would hate for them to go.
New South was once again very good. As two couples we were there on a Sunday night and it was pretty quiet so we were able to be seated at a table for 4 in the corner bar area. A place suited for good conversation on a quiet night. All of us had different dishes..shrimp & grits, boneless fried chicken (so tender), roasted chicken and the meat loaf. Everything was delicious and prepared just right. The Something Different cocktail is always my favorite and now my husbands. I love that reservations can be made so, no worries about seating.
Food was really really good!
But the complete lack of service makes me not want to return. It started when we walked in the door and we were completely ignored by two employees. We introduced ourselves to be sat and they acted as such we bothered them.
We waited approximately 15 minutes for a server to come acknowledge us. Got drinks 10 minutes after that.
50 minutes to get our food. Food was good. Food was not warm though. I enjoyed the cold meatloaf and my wife still enjoyed her cold biscuits and gravy.
After food came we were forgotten about. Took another 30 minutes to get the check.
I don't have time for a 2 hour brunch. It's definitely not that type of establishment for a 2 hour meal.
We pretty much answered our own question of why every business around was slammed and this place was empty.
This was our first visit to New South in a few years, and I was pleased to see gluten-free options available. One thing I don't remember from being there previously is that the menu is a la carte now, and sides are at least $3 each. The gluten-free dessert option, the buttermilk panna catta was divine and my favorite part of the meal! I had the gluten-free shrimp and grits. The shrimp was delicious and cooked perfectly. The grits were quite plain, however. A friend had the gluten-free chicken and thought it was delicious. The menu items are creative takes on Southern and other fare. Everyone else enjoyed their meals, too. We did not have drinks, so I cannot comment on those offerings. The location in the Arboretum is convenient to South Charlotte areas.
Enjoyed celebrating our anniversary while taking part in the Queens Fest. All our food was delicious and loved the biscuits! Trout and pork chops were great. We'll definitely be back. I've already told multiple friends to try it. Planning for brunch very soon. Thank you for a wonderful evening.
From service to food, our experience was phenomenal. Our waitress was wonderful and helped us to understand the menu & also seemed to anticipate what we might need or want without hovering. The food was absolutely amazing, and we left stuffed but already thinking about what to order on our next visit. This was our first time there, but we agreed already that it will become one of "our" spots for date nights.
We had a family member in town for a couple days and so we invited other local family members to join us for dinner. The food was very good, great variety of options and reasonably priced. The restaurant was not noisey so it gave us a perfect time to chat. We will come again.
While we've had dinner and lunch here before, this was the first time we've been to New South for brunch. It was fabulous and we will definitely be back. We loved the variety of choices and we thought everything was a good value. Also, this kids brunch menu offered breakfast fare, but then an option for fried or grilled chicken with their choice of multiple sides. Our kids appreciate some variety past chicken fingers, etc and this was really great to see on a kids menu! The deviled eggs were really fantastic. My husband and I both tried one of the benedict type dishes and our food was excellent. Also, LOVE that you can make a reservation!
This is a charming restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating. While there for lunch I couldn't resist the Mixed Greens salad made with locally grown ingredients. The combination of the orange mustard vinaigrette (just the right amount), pumpkin seeds and aged white cheddar cheese was delicious. I added the grilled chicken and had leftovers for later! There is a nice bar with local and craft beer selections, ample wine choices and cocktails if you desire. The staff is always welcoming and happy to serve and accommodate. If you're shopping in the shops in this center where New South Kitchen is located this is the place you should stop for a bite to eat. Enjoy!
