Never a bad time at Ned Ludd, always extraordinary.
We took a friend for her birthday, were delighted to find a parking lot, warm candlelight, lovely service and great food for dinner. We shared several small plates with great flavors and textures, then all had the 'rib' (a steak that night) over puree of root vegetables, perfectly cooked and small enough portions to finish. After dinner the staff brought our friend dessert with a birthday candle--perfect!
Ned Ludd is an experience in itself. The small, eclectic restaurant is a tucked away gem. The atmosphere is very inviting. The service is exceptional. The menu includes a delicious variety of Northwest dishes. We had the mushroom toast as an appetizer. That alone is reason to go to Ned Ludd. It was more than divine and I regretted offering to share it with my friend. My dinner partner had a seasonal pork dish that he said was fantastic. I had the roasted whole trout. I was looking forward to trout roasted in their wood fired oven. However, the delicate fish was so overly seasoned and dry inside I could not finish eating it. I tried scraping the thick layer of herbs (which made the fish taste incredibly salty) off, but the intense flavor of them permeated the fish. If I had had my eyes closed I would not have known I was eating fish.
I certainly would like to return to Ned Ludd to try another dish. It is a wonderful place to enjoy dinner out and I cannot assume the meal I had is indicative of the other items on the menu.
This was our first time at Ned Ludd. My cousin was visiting for the day and wanted a “Portland foodie experience.” I am happy to say that Ned Ludd met and exceeded our expectations! The food was exceptional, the service was incredibly friendly, and no one batted an eye when we walked in with a 5 yr old. The four of us left stuffed and happy, and the bill was very reasonable.
I can’t wait to go back!
Ned Ludd was a fantastic dining experience for me and my out of town guests! We were having a reunion as college roommates, and I requested a special cocktail just for us. Kyle the bartender called me in advance to discuss the details and promptly after seating us, a beautiful "Rose City" cocktail arrived at our table. My friends were very impressed and happy! The food was great and is very shareable amongst family and/or friends. The mushroom toast was delicious, as was the risotto and the fresh trout. It was a perfect Portland experience, especially if you are entertaining company from other places. You can't go wrong at Ned Ludd!
Excellent porchetta and Trout dishes. The kids board was excellent. Special shoutout to the cocktails. Well done!
Enjoyed our Valentines Dinner Date. Absolutely will return
A staple dining experience in Portland! Great drinks, yummy food, and very chic ambiance.
I love Ned Ludd. We had our wedding reception there in 2018 so whenever I’m back in Portland, I go back. This time I brought two newcomers to Ned Ludd and both loved the food. They will be back for sure!!
This is our third time back to Ned Ludd. Every visit has been consistently great, with terrific seasonal menu changes, outstanding flavors, and friendly, knowledgeable service. We really enjoy introducing this restaurant to friends, and those that have gone on our recommendation have all raved about it! Thanks for a terrific experience!
Love the food and staff and cocktails. Bread is fantastic. They can do no wrong.
It was over the top amazing thank you for making it so special
They were very accommodating as we changed the number and time a few times. Such a lovely time!
This was our favorite restaurant we visited whim in Portland. The meal and service were both excellent!!
Delicious food all around. Wood-grilled veg and porchetta were highlights. Delightful, informed service. Thank you.
Our third time or so, awesome as always. Had multiple smaller dishes, one main, dessert cookie. Amazing tastes, presentation, creativity. Great service as well - present, helpful, not overbearing. Cocktail was really tasty and fun as well. Look forward to next visit.
Cozy environment with interesting menu. All the dishes we ordered were delicious.
Fantastic meal, had the chef's choice. Kicking ourselves for not getting to Ned Ludd for so long. Amid the buzz of all the great Portland restaurants, this went below the fold too quickly on us. What a gem... Shhh....
Trust me, get the mushroom bread. The place is high end in all the right places and none of the wrong ones. Nice wines, great food, nice people, but not ostentatious, and as an added bonus there wasn't anywhere for me to tip as it is baked into the bill already at a set fee. Loved it.
Delicious food with many vegan options. Nice atmosphere and great service
Wonderful flavors and textures on each plate! Service friendly and patient! Ambiance casual, comfortable and relaxing! Watching the prep, cook and service team operate was fascinating. They all operated so calmly, quietly and patiently with each other and the guests. Outstanding evening all around. Thanks Ned Ludd.
We came on NYE and they had a seven course tasting menu. The food was good, but not great, especially at this price point. I wouldn't return or recommend this restaurant to a friend.
The food was excellent. Everything we ordered was perfect. We had the green salad, the mushroom toast, gnocchi, and duck. We cleaned our plates.
There were four of us. We chose the feast! Being our first time there we only had the reviews to go by. Everything was so delicious and unique. Service was professional and fun. Thank you! We will definitely be going back again!
Needed to be leaving the restaurant at 8:30, sat down at 7 and ordered the Christmas Feast. We asked the waiter if it would be ok timing wise and she said that they could squeeze some of the courses together. We walked out at exactly 8:30, incredible service.
Ned Ludd was outstanding. the mushroom Brie toast was amazing as was the Brussel sprouts. The service was fantastic-attentive without being pushy or overly intrusive. Fantastic meal!
Fantastic, start to finish. Best service in Portland.
The appetizers, charcuterie board and field greens were fantastic. Porcetta entree was horrible with too much fat, and drenched in apple and mulled wine. Hardly edible and really expensive. More entrees needed and focus on wood oven versus overdoing the marinades.
I always enjoy Ned Ludd. The Sunday-Tuesday Prix Fixe meal is a great tasty value with interesting wine pairings. The cassoulet was a particular hit. Salad was a little less inspired than usual but still tasty. Patricia Green wine pairings were a treat. Service was good.
Four of us - Had high hopes for Ned Ludd, it was on the list for some time. The service was OK, had to flag our waitress a couple of times for bread, drinks etc. even though I don't think she had more than two tables (this is a small place). Two of us had the rib eye steak with crab. Unfortunately the bernaise(?) sauce pretty much overwhelmed the meat. One of us had the rye gnocchi which was very tough and chewy. Big plus - they did comp us one of the steaks without asking since they could tell my wife did not like it ( she just kind of pushed it around on the plate). Desserts were the high point of the meal - excellent. The staff were pleasant and the place was warm and inviting, but all in all not as good as expected.
fabulous on every level
Wonderful overall! Will definitely return!
Great food--very creative and flavorful. Great service. Will definitely go back.
Food and service were great. It had been years since I had been there and need to go back more often!
Once you are seated, they bring you some tasty nibbles to enjoy while you peruse the menu. My Flank steak was perfectly cooked and the Slow-Roasted Porchetta melted in your mouth. Our server, Fia, was excellent. Tasty drinks and an excellent music on the stereo. Wonderful dining experience. I look forward to returning soon.
My wife and ordered the Feast, which is basically chef's choice off the menu. It was fantastic! Five courses, not over priced, healthy portions, and dessert to top it off. Can't wait to go back.
Service was the star tonight. Top notch, attentive, friendly, and fun. Dishes were good but some hit and missed. The octopus salad was inventive yet the octopus was overly fishy and cooked far too long as it was dry and tough... Gnocchi was excellent... great burned butter flavor, moist yet chewy, and came with wonderful squash. Porchetta was excellent but it had way too much sweet accompaniments (apples and grapes) and wish it was a little more balanced. Chocolate chip cookie in a skillet was excellent but needs to come with more than a couple ounces of milk (which is amazing!).
