We spent 2 hours at the restaurant eating and talking. The opportunity to interact with students and to observe them in the kitchen was delightful and the food was extraordinary! We would return in a moment.
My daughter and I were in town for a visit to the New England Culinary Institute so I thought it only appropriate that we have dinner at the NECI's restuarant so she could see what it was like. The food was nicely presented and very well prepared. The serving sizes where proper portion sizes not the over abundance of food that you sometimes get other places. My meal came with mashed potato's and they were by far the best I have ever had. The assortment of the spring veggies that came with the dish were very good. The only thing I didn't like was the fresh mint ice cream that was served with my strawberry shortcake dessert. The waitress immediately went and got me a dish of vanilla ice cream and a yummy chocolate cookie. Would go again.
We ate outside, which for a street was surprisingly not noisy (5:30pm Saturday sitting).
Caution: we presumed the menu on the web site was real ... it was not what they were serving, I wish they either had an updated menu or place a statement saying it was a representative menu. Given this is a culinary school, we studied the menu to learn exactly what the "funky" offerings were, then we got there and found most items were totally different. That was disappointing.
For a school, I was surprised at the relative poor timing of service. It may have been related to being outside on the deck; but that is no excuse. Some of the wait time between courses and for the final payment process was very long.
The food was very good and artfully displayed; the staff (even the ones that did not serve me personally) was friendly and seemed to care whether I had a good time. I would definitely recommend it to others and have done so already, in fact.
Our party of seven had a lovely time at Main Street Grill. We enjoyed the spring prix fixe menu and the servers were very accommodating.
I was in town for work with a few colleagues, and we decided we wanted a nice meal. We were seated quickly, looked at our menus, and all decided on the prix fixe menu which included 1 choice of 2 appetizers, 1 choice of 3 entrees, and 1 choice of 2 desserts. We all decided on the salmon as the entree and went to order when we were told that they were out of salmon. So, I settled on the gnocchi which was good, but there were just 6 pieces with some greens. The salad appetizer was also good, perfectly dressed, but finished in 4 bites. The dessert, the chocolate dish which was also very small. I do not demand huge portion sizes, but I would like a restaurant to give a full serving size, which I do not feel was the case here.
Overall great experience for anyone willing to have outstanding quality food prepared with ingenuity.
Everything was absolutely delicious, and the portions are big enough to both feed you and keep some room for the desert !
NECI does a very nice job providing a quality dining experience, with very well prepared foods and attentive, but unobtrusive service. It's on my short lis of local mid to high end dining locations.
While more expensive than many other area restaurants the food is gourmet and the restaurant's commitement to sustainability makes the extra expense worth it.
NECI provides a culinary delight with a varied and sophisticated menu, all the more impressive as students are still learning their craft.
Great food, generally economical. Had the tapas menu, which in other places tends to be pricey. Not here. Fun to try various dishes.
Great Sunday brunch. Lots of choices; usual steam table stuff, made to order omlets, roast beef etc. but also varied selection of pates, salmon(smoked and poached),sushi, unusual vegi stuff and great mini deserts. $19 for all you can eat was a great vlaue. Normally not a buffet diner as I don't usually eat enough to make it worhtwhile but the salmon, pate, deserts and cheese were woth it alone. Had to wait as the reservation was at the last seating at 1:00 and the table hadn't opened up but there is a nice bookstore next door to hang out in and eventually was seated in the bar downstairs which was quieter anyway. Some presentations cleared off quickly but were promtly refilled. Attentive staff.
The brunch has a fantastic selection of exquisite treats. The staff is friendly and attentive. You can't go wrong. We love it every time we go.
The mint pea soup was a fanstastic liquid spring garden. The lamb schnitzel was the best schnitzel I've ever had. I'm ethnically German and I know what I'm talking about.
I hope the mint pea soup and the lamb schnitzel/red wine pairing from that day will both become part of your standard menu.
Outstanding food and service! Can't wait to return.
Womnderful lunch. The NECI students and staff do a fantastic job. We always dine at least once at the Main Street Grill when we visit our son in Montpelier.
Keep up the outstanding work.
great prix fixe meals, excellent value, $3 pints of Vermont beers
Very imaginative Sunday Brunch menu, and the students are so much fun. They are learly trying their best, and they are successful-! Though a long drive for us from Boston, its worth the trip.
Delicious food and excellent service.
Once again a fabulous brunch! We look forward to our next meal in a couple of weeks when we are down visiting our son that is a student at NECI.
Enjoyed a wonderful Sunday brunch buffet. Lots of locals. This is a culinary school with students preparing and serving so don't be too critical. However, the food was first rate and if some things aren't perfect you have to realize these are students learning. Would like to return to try their tapas menu in the lounge. Overall, an exceptional value.
Great brunch! We were delighted by the quality and variety of food.
Amazing food, great experience and pretty good service (the waitstaff was friendly but without personality). The only issue was that the restaurant was freezing! I know it's Vermont, but turn up the heat! When spending $100 (for two) I shouldn't need to wear my coat inside.
The food was great, and the waiter was excellent about explaining menu options and describing the food. Very accommodating of kids. We were also celebrating a birthday which was handled really nicely.
This was our 3rd time visiting this great NECI establishment for their brunch. I would highly recommend this place to anyone. All the food was wonderful and the staff terrific. Thank you for another great meal and hope to see you all again soon!
Perfect for families and friends. Lots to choose from. Enthusiastic staff. My favs - dumplings, chicken salad, fire-roasted bread, sushi, lava cake, cookie spoons with chocolate and rose petal. Others in my group loved the smoked fish, cheese selection, pineapple dessert, among other items. Loved the service and attention.
Never disappointed. The food was great. Being a cooking school's restaurant, I have experienced some delays at times, but the wait staff has always kept me updated and the food and price is worth the trip.
Food always interesting and well prepared. Oddly, the appetizer portions are large and the entree portions. Small. Almost the same.
My seafood appetizer was fantastic as was the lamb shank.Crocker,my server, paced my dinner nicely so I could read my history book! Great place!
Best place to eat lunch on a Saturday afternoon in Montpelier.
The presentation of the food is kind of stuck in the 80's -- paper doilies under the soup bowl, cheese sampler on an oval white plate, tourneed vegetables, etc. It was kind of like eating in an anonymous big hotel restaurant...
The Sunday Brunch is FANTASTIC!!!
Over the years this NECI restaurant has improved so much, especially in the training of wait staff, not to mention the quality of the food. When one spends nearly $30 for lunch, not a small amount for many Vermonters, one expects the best, and that is what brings me back to Main Street Bar & Grill!
It was great especially celebrating birthdays.
Service by Lucas was great - I can't believe he's only 18! Loved the options for vegetarians and also the local meats. Thanks for a great brunch and another wonderful memory!
Absolutly fabulous dinner prepared and served by culinary students! Would highly recommend this experience to anyone who wants value and a diverse culinary experience.
We found the student waiter following around a bit much. The student was obviously very inexperienced. Perhaps let them start with lunch. The meal was very good except the crepe and sorbet dessert was not. The citrus caramel sauce was lame and the crepe was boring. The poached pears were tough as though not ripe when poached.
Overall the meal was good. 2 meals were excellent and 2 were so-so. The variety of meal choices had something for every palate. Service is unmatched.
We go to the Sunday brunch on occasion, mostly with family, and it is always superb and highly recommended!
The experience was great. I imensely enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. Of special note was the pumpkin soup, outstanding! The service was just what I was looking for, there when I needed it, invisible when I wanted peace. Over all, it was one of the better dining excperiences I have had in a number of years.
