We were immediately seated at a lovely table overlooking the river. The menu is extensive—both overwhelming and novel—so we chose the tapas platter for the whole table (three of us). The beer and wine list had interesting and unusual offerings. Service was enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and very attentive—clearly a young team keen to impress. All the tapas items were delicious and well prepared. The chef’s talent shines through in the variety and finesse of each dish. The dessert menu, in contrast, was simple—just three choices: chocolate mousse, crème brûlée, and lemon posset. We all had the posset and found it outstanding. While not inexpensive, the meal offered excellent value and was thoroughly enjoyed. This restaurant clearly aims to impress and bring a touch of sophistication to the food scene in this county town.

We enjoyed our lunch at The White Horse. We ate in the bar because our dog was with us and had a choice of tables. It was a warm day but the bar is light and airy. Service was efficient and friendly. The menu is fairly standard pub fare - fish and chips; ham, egg and chips, etc - but was well cooked. I had chicken roulade (chicken in parma ham with spinach and sun-dried tomatoes) which was a bit more ambitious and tasty, although the Lynonnaise potatoes were soggy and oily. After lunch we had some tea in the garden, which is very pleasant, with views of the village square and church. When we booked, I was asked if it was a special occasion. It was my mother's 95th (!) birthday, which I mentioned. However, no reference was made to this while we were there, which made me wonder why ask the question?

We don’t often write reviews but wanted to share our experience because we really couldn’t find fault. A friendly welcome, superb real ales brewed by the owners and food that was really well cooked and presented. Compliments to a talented chef. We both enjoyed the hake dinner and each tried different desserts. Nanook and the Black Bear bitter were two of the best ales we’ve had for a long time. We will be back for and we’re looking forward to trying your sister establishments. Thoroughly recommended.
