National Exemplar Ratings and Reviews
This was not our first visit, as we've been for other evenings and lunchtimes...also the year we went to India we had Thanksgiving dinner here. We met good friends from Springboro for dinner...we always have a pre-Christmas dinner with them, usually at the Golden Lamb in Lebanon, but since it was sold to new owners several years ago we have been disappointed in their menu and an ambiance that has changed from the old historic inn to something we don't particularly enjoy. Our food at the National Exemplar was delicious! Three of us had the prime rib, which was cooked to perfection for each one of us...the fourth in our group had a vegetarian option which he enjoyed. My lemon tart with berries for dessert was yummy! The one disappointment was the carrot cake...first of all, it's way too large a serving and should be advertised as a dessert for two; secondly, however, our friend said it was far from the best carrot cake she'd ever had. My husband's pot de creme with peppermint whipped cream was delicious.
The Hungarian Mushroom Soup is unbelievable! The recipe is on the web if you want to make 2-1/2 gallons!!! Our waiter Billy from Hammersmith London was charming. We appreciated the complimentary birthday dessert for my friend Linda. The bread which accompanied the lamb lasagna was charred to the point where we sent it back. There were several glitches with the wine service. First a glass of wine was delivered after we had changed our mind and ordered a bottle. Then a bottle of French Vouvray at $48 was brought instead of the $38 L'Ecole No. 41 Chenin Blanc. The bill showed both the glass and the Vouvray, but it was fixed. The hostess was very nice about it. No restaurant is always perfect and I give our experience 4 stars out of 5!
Atmosphere is warm and inviting for intimate conversation. The menu is a nice change in pace from typical dining experience at other locations.
Service staff was courteous and professional. Our food was prepared as requested.
Our overall experience was great. We’ll return again more frequently.
We came here for our anniversary. They gave us champagne, to celebrate :) That made the night even more special. So thank you for that! They gave us carrot cake too! I didnt think i liked carrot cake but it was actually amazing! We had a couple issues with our food but they fixed the issues when we mentioned them. I had the chicken & my date had the filet.
Stayed at the Mariemont Inn for our anniversary for the weekend. Ate there for dinner and breakfast. Outstanding ambience. Incredible service. Expertly prepared food. Five out of five. Made our anniversary experience memorable. Highly recommend for any meal and any occasion!
I arrive before the restaurant opened, so I took a seat in the waiting area. There war several employees sitting at a table, but no one got up to welcome me or to let me know how much time it would be before the restaurant opened. They could've been more welcoming.
Went for Restaurant Week, so first time here. Food was not that great, although they tried. The wine pairings were every good with the three course meal. Duck confirm crepe was ice cold. It was supposed to be served cold but it was out-of-the-fridge cold. Fish was tasty but overcooked. Carrot cake was scalding hot and undercooked. So hot the icing melted all over and it was mushy. I really wanted to like the restaurant but....
We are regulars of The Presidents Room at The Phoenix where we learned that they are sister restaurants w/ the NE. My friend and I had a rare Saturday night off so we decided to finally visit. Our server Maddie was wonderful from beginning to end. The management team went above and beyond to make our first time dining experience very memorable. We cannot wait to come back and try their fall menu! Cheers team!
We wanted a quiet outdoor dining experience on a Friday night. The National Exemplar really fit the bill. Our waiter, Jeremy, was congenial and knowledgeable. Food service was a good pace, and food was tasty; soup, salad, sliders and ribs. The neighborhood strolled by but didn't disturb. We caught up with our friends and they were impressed with it all, having not been there before. The wife kept saying, "This is so nice!" We will all be back.
Not a great value, had expected a bit more from the menu. Sides (vegetables) that accompanied my entree were very skimpy. Fish was a little overcooked. Everyone else's entrees were fairly good. Other than that, a good local convenient neighborhood restaurant in an area without many choices.
First time here, outstanding. New server couldn't work the crazy corkscrew, but he was cute trying. Apps were good: pork riblets and marcona almonds. Salads were divine. Entrees were delish. Medium rare filet was cooked perfectly and generously sized, with roasted brussels sprouts, roasted tomatoes, pureed potato. Cleaned my plate. Sicilian linguine with mussels was and old world delight...saffron linguine. Amazing. No desserts, we were too full. But the server knew it was my birthday and brought us three desserts... chocolate ganache cake, raspberry cheesecake, and their famous carrot cake. TO. DIE. FOR. The wines were varied and very good, although horribly overpriced. Overall, a great restaurant, a wonderful memory, and we will be back!
A friend and neighbor recommended the National Exemplar and gave it high reviews. We originally came for "burger week" but plan to go again for the Monday Oyster special. Our waiter, Aaron, was friendly and very personable. We dined on the patio and enjoyed the warm evening breeze. The Hungarian mushroom soup was exceptional!
Chose restaurant because they participated in Cincy Burger Week 2017. Burger was very good but they changed the Hungarian Mushroom soup recipe! :o(
Our waiter, nice guy, but forgetful and unorganized - perhaps new to position. Had to ask for spoons (??) for the 3 of us that ordered soup; should be served and consumed while hot.
Also, he totally forgot one of our beer orders and finally, when the tabs were delivered, they were substantially incorrect.
We went there for a quiet early dinner, to celebrate my birthday. We were able to find a quiet booth, on the side of the dining area. We passed up on the outdoor seating -- too hot and sunny. Nice selection of food, generous portions, great service. Unbeknownst to me, my companion had brought in a birthday cake beforehand. At the appropriate time, the server brought out the cake with a lit candle (mercifully, no singing), then took it back and sliced out some pieces to serve.
