An antique hacienda made of adobe brick, this casual La Jolla restaurant serves up Baja-inspired cuisine in its charming dining room and spacious patio, both accented by large, inviting fireplaces. Creative dishes are both locally inspired and locally sourced by the Mustangs & Burros culinary team, who also take a personalized approach to an innovative spirits program. Sip on house-made sangria, craft cocktails barrel-aged on site, and margaritas made with Herradura tequila, hand-selected during the staff’s annual “pilgrimage” to Jalisco, Mexico.

Mustangs & Burros at Estancia La Jolla Ratings and Reviews
Went here before the Playhouse. We ate inside because weather turned cold. Our loss. Inside atmosphere is a bit sad. Chair upholstery is so old that we literally sunk when we sat down. Walls were dirty. No buzz in the restaurant. BUT, food was still good and wines by the glass delicious. Atmosphere outside is far superior.
the food is AMAZING!!!! Everything i ate was so delicious and well prepared! Ive never had scallops cooked to perfection the way they did it and the blueberry muffin with flavored butter was incredible. The ahi tuna on top of a wafer was so unique and great combo for sweet and salty taste! They were very busy when i went so service was very slow and had to remind them to bring our food missing from out order and basic things like water and ice multiple times. Other than that it was a great time and will be back for the delicious food!
Although we'd heard great things about this restaurant, we were extremely disappointed with our visit. The restaurant was fairly empty but we were encouraged to make a reservation before visiting. When we arrived, there was no hostess for several minutes so we couldn't be seated. Once we were seated, we weren't visited by the waitress or given any water for almost 20 minutes. We ordered the chips and guacamole appetizer and the chips were stale. The main course took over an hour to be served and 2 of the dishes were cold. The third dish was a painfully small portion (and highly overpriced). Overall, this restaurant was a letdown. It's a shame because the outdoor patio seating was beautiful. We won't be returning.
Our waitress was very friendly and accommodating. The food was great. However, the hostess was surly and did not look pleased to be there. She greeted us rather grumpily, which left a sour taste in our mouths. The table was also off balance. It kept rocking and made for an uncomfortable evening. Also, my girlfriend's water glass had lipstick all over it that wasn't hers, so we questioned how sanitary everything was. Lastly, the small portion sizes left us rather disappointed as well.
Overall, I would not come back here. There are plenty of other good restaurants in La Jolla and San Diego in general that render coming back here unworthy. I would not recommend this restaurant to others for the reasons mentioned above.
First, I love the ambience on the outdoor patio at M&B. It's just a few minutes off I-5 but it's like a quick vacation to a New Mexican hacienda. I had two dinners there in the last week. One before restaurant week and one during. I had tuna tartar and the fish tacos the first time. When I hesitated as to whether I wanted grilled or Baja style, the waitress suggested I could get some of each. Great suggestion and great meal. The restaurant week meal I chose was watermelon and tomato salad, seafood risotto and brownie sundae. It was also very good but portion was sooo small. One of my companions is a large man, I'm sure he went home hungry so not the best value. The atmosphere is the biggest draw for me so I'll be back!
I loved the setting of the restaurant and its decor. The food is excellent and very creative. Having lived in Mexico City for 40 years, I think the chef does an amazing job of incorporating the flavors into his cuisine. The cumin crusted steak, the grilled street corn, and the Mexican chocolate s'more were fantastic.
We chose this restaurant to celebrate my sisters work promotion and I wanted to take her somewhere special and very nice. My husband and I had been there before to celebrate an anniversary and it was unbelievably wonderful. Unfortunately the dinner with my sister didn't go so well. We had two waitresses who didn't know who was given our table. They took our order twice and brought us lukewarm food. The appetizers were lovely but they forgot to bring one of the entrees. They apologized plenty but by the time we did get all of the food it just wasn't as spectacular as I had remembered. It was a gorgeous restaurant but I felt it was overpriced and I was bummed at the service we received because I was hoping for it to be such a special evening.
Much prefer eating outside at this restaurant. We like to go before the plays at LA Jolla Playhouse. Service is friendly and prompt. Valet parking is great. The menu is somewhat limited, but if you enjoy stringing several small plates together, very satisfying.
Poor customer service! I called to confirm my reservations and make changes, but they never answered the phone and when I could finally talk to someone they had to transfer to a different person because they did not have the answer. My colleagues used to love going here after work, but everyone was not impressed.
There were 4 of us for dinner. One entree came out cold, another undercooked. The staff took both plates back to the kitchen and remade them. One entree was returned and met our expectations, the other was still undercooked. The waiter disclosed that one chef that staffs the kitchen he can really count on, the other one (that was working that night) he really had to watch. Although the manager offered us two desserts on the house in an effort to make it up to us, the meal was already impacted for us.
We had dinner here on Friday night. We sat outside on the patio near the fireplace. The ambience was great--casual and cozy with soft lighting. Our server was very friendly and solicitous, but not intrusive. My husband started with the corn bisque, which was a bit too sweet, and then ordered the filet and enjoyed it very much. It was cooked perfectly medium rare. I ordered a half Caesar salad and the sea bass. It is probably some of the best fish I have had. The top had a seared crust and it was served in a very delicious broth and surrounded by mussels. My only suggestion would be to serve bread with the plate so all the broth can be enjoyed. We also shared a very nice bottle of Sauvignon Blanc and finished the meal by sharing the bread pudding with ice cream. All in all a very nice experience.
We were staying at the Lodge at Torrey Pines for a long weekend and decided to go off property for a meal. We're glad we did. Sat outside on the beautiful patio - fire lit and heaters on. So pretty and comfortable. Some people just hanging out with cocktails and some eating dinner. We ordered a bunch of tacos to share - carnitas, carne asada and pork belly. All were excellent. Margaritas on the rocks. Well crafted. The servers were attentive and really friendly. AND there was a guitarist that set the perfect tone for the evening. We would definitely go back. Wish it was in my neighborhood....
We came for my birthday. We all enjoyed our food very much. Our waitress was wonderful. I even got a marvelous piece of chocolate cake and ice cream free. My Fillet was very excellent!! We have been here maybe 4 times now. the first 3 we sat inside. This time we sat outside. it was kinda chilly, but with the heater by the table se were fine and enjoyed eating outside amongst the flowers and huge fireplace with a nice patio.
We got married at the Estancia in 2010 and love coming back each year for our anniversary. Highly recommend everything about the resort, including Mustangs and Burros! They always treat you well and make you feel welcome. Beautiful setting. Thanks again for a wonderful experience!
