We go every year in march, have always been pleased.
This is a favorite among many available restaurants in the area. The food is always delicious. It is a great option for people who are gluten intolerant.
Kitchen was on point. Service was good.
We went for brunch. I had delicious lobster Benedict. My husband and I shared freshly made donut holes served with chocolate sauce and raspberry sauce. This is a must have if you go for brunch.
We have never had a problem anytime we have eaten here!
The ambiance is pleasant, quiet, with a pastoral view over the marshland.
However, the food was nearly inedible, fish was dry and overcooked, dessert was
obviously old. Moreover, the service was poor, largely it seemed due to understaffing
during our admittedly early dinner. Finally, the piano player at the bar only added
to the creepiness with songs from the forties. The Rudder can be just fine if you strike it
at the right time, but this certainly wasn't it.
Lovely setting, our waitress was very nice, but service was very slow in getting our meal.
When we arrived at 3:30 as booked we were seated immediately and our waitress showed up in a timely way, was very pleasant and personable. My wife had baked Haddock and requested mashed potatoes instead of rice. It was all very good. I ordered the Shrimp Scampi which was very good. We both used the lunch menu and the portions were just right. We will be going back and will no doubt have the same dishes. The price was reasonable. Less than 39 dollars including a 6 dollar tip. We did wait a little while for the waitress to come back to ask about desert and then give us the bill.
I was there on a much needed celebratory date with my husband. We had been there a few years ago and the experience was more "elegant" than on this occasion. It was very loud and felt like a family style restaurant. For the price it would have been nice to have a more quiet / relaxed atmosphere.
Very disappointed in this place. The server was not friendly at all, or very attentive. The appetizers were okay, but the meals were bland and over-cooked. The fish didn't taste fresh, even the haddock, which is unbelievable, considering how cheap and available fresh haddock is. Neither my husband or I ate even half of our entrees. The kids liked theirs okay. We did appreciate that the host came over after to see how it could have been better, but there were no attempts to make amends. Definitely would not go back or recommend.
Food is always great... risotto Soo so good!
Waitress was excellent.
Our meal was wonderful. - had the haddock with the seafood stuffing excellent and carrots cut and cooked beautifully.
The lunch time caesar side salad was marginal with lettuce, very scant cheese and croutons too big and tough to eat.
Normally I'd say this place is too loud but we were fortunate there were no large parties in the separate section of the restaurant and the view was still nice and the service was good although we were right in the path of the servers. How to appreciate you doing Groupon which made it more affordable for us.
We had the best service and a wonderful meal - all the seafood dishes we tried were very delicious and fresh. We loved that we had a wonderful relaxing time and never felt rushed! :-)
A pleasant evening with good food.
We have dined here several times and enjoyed it. Last Saturday night it was awful. Poor service and we waited over an hour for our meals. We finally walked out before they came because the waitress didn’t check in the meal status or us. Really bad service. Not sure if we will go back.
Got a great deal on a Groupon. The food was very good. My boyfriend who was celebrating his birthday ordered a sirloin special and it was overcooked which we unfortunately expect at restaurants and the piece was very grisly.
Great selection of seafood. Bright atmosphere with views. Waitress was very professional and attentive.
My wife and I went to dinner on Sunday evening. There were very few people in the restaurant yet the service was amazingly slow. It appeared only only person was working both the bar and dining room. As for the food, despite the tasty sounding array of choices I thought the food was very average. What was most disappointing was the fact that EVERYTHING was cold! You can imagine how difficult it is to eat lobster bisque that was literally thick due to its temperature. As for the remainder of food: seafood cakes, fried calamari and popcorn shrimp it was average at best. To be frank with the exception of the calamari everything else seemed to be out of a box. We very seldom complain of restaurants(and did not do so to our server because I just wanted to put it behind me and call it a night) but I thought the Muddy Rudder should be aware of what our experience was like and hopefully take any/all necessary corrective action. Good luck in the future. Brendan
We go here often on date night. The atmosphere is great and the service is very good.
Our food and service were fantastic!!! We sat a little longer to enjoy the live pianist.
The restaurant is warm and welcoming. Our server was attentive without hovering. The food was very traditional, well prepared, and tasty. There was live piano music in the background— a lovely touch
We love the Muddy Rudder. It's a wonder place to dine with family, friends, dinner guests, and Veteran's Day.
Service was good but the food was mediocre. Nice location.
We enjoyed our evening with Muddy Rudder for dinner. In our party we had three generations and there was something wonderful for each of us. When the food arrived it was delicious and we left completely satisfied. We are planning to return for another wonderful meal.
We have been to the Muddy Rudder many times over the years. This last time was a bit disappointing.Three of us were disappointed in our entrees. The rest was fine.
The food was good, although the fried pickle's were over priced and a small serving. The breading didn't stick to the pickles and the pickles weren't sliced uniformly. The top pickles were thick cut and nice and crunchy, while the rest were nearly paper-thin and soggy. The steak tips had an Asian marinade paired with mashed potatoes and gravy, which I found odd. I would have preferred a more classic style of preparation, rather than a teriyaki marinade. The mashed potatoes were great, but the greens beans had absolutely no flavor and seemed to be frozen and steamed. A better preparation would be fresh and sauteed with seasoning and garlic. My husband had the seafood platter and loved every bit of it. It was massive and he had 3 full meals from it. The clams were cooked perfectly, the shrimp was delicious, scallops were great, but the haddock was slightly overcooked. Oh, and the fries were some of the best around! The waitress was pleasant, but neglected to refill my iced tea, so I was left without a drink for my meal. She wasn't very attentive, only stopping by once during our meal, even though the place was empty since we went at 2:30pm. However, she was familiar with the menu and offered great recommendations. Overall, it was a great experience. The view from our table was phenomenal, and would be even better in the summer and fall. The atmosphere was pleasant, the restaurant was clean, well-kept, and well-appointed.
A bit disappointed with our visit to this restaurant. We were meeting up with friends so we needed something convenient to the interstate. Our entrées consisted of soups and salads. My Caesar salad left a lot to be desired the Romain lettuce seemed old and the 5 to 6 grilled shrimp added to it had a rather distinct taste that verged on slightly spoiled my Caesar salad left a lot to be desired the Romain lettuce seemed old and the 5 to 6 grilled shrimp added to it had a rather distinct taste that verged on slightly spoiled. My wife’s onion soup was acceptable. We didn’t see much value in this restaurant. Maybe a good spot to stop for drinks as the bar looked inviting
Our dinner was so fun and tasty. We love the Muddy Rudder for a special dining experience. Service was too slow [told due to holiday parties]. Did not feel like that was a good excuse and nothing was offered to compensate us for the 2.5 hour time at the table. Would still return but would inquire if the kitchen was struggling to keep up.
We were a bit disappointed with this visit. The service was extremely slow. We waited at least 15 minutes before someone came to take our drink order and then waited over 30 minutes for our food order. I had Fish and Chips and it was mediocre at best. the fish and fries were luke-warm. My friends seafood scampi was pretty tasteless and very watery. The pork loin dish my wife and other friend had were very good. We've eaten here many times and this was probably an anomaly, so we will return in the future.
Great food and nice restaurant in a nice spot and close to Freeport!
Quick service with reservation. Food was great. Lobster Mac and cheese was good. Wife had the grilled salmon and loved it. Waiter was very attentive. Would definitely recommend and will be back when in the area.
Service was terrible. We sat at our table for at least 10 minutes before the server arrived and then waited nearly 45 minutes for our food. My food (sea bass in miso broth) was good but my husband’s seafood platter was cold. Then it took at least another 10-15 minutes for the server to come by to pick up our payment. We had a groupon but with a charge for every side dish, it’s expensive and not worth it.
One of my favorite restaurants. Never had a meal I did not thoroughly enjoy. The atmosphere, music, ambiance, service, waitresses, waiters, ..everything about this restaurant is wonderful!
We had great seats overlooking the water. Our waitress was efficient and friendly. Three of us had the fried scallops which are always our favorite. They have a light, tasty batter and certainly are filling. The other person in our party had the stuffed haddock. He has that quite often when we go out. He said it is the best he has ever had-anywhere.
I almost forgot; we can never pass up the rudder chips with shrimp. Tasty and a wonderfully large serving. Great evening.
Good food. We always enjoy it there! Never disappointed and always a pleasant waitress or bartender, depending on where we sit!
Would definitely go back for a second try. I was there on a Sunday so perhaps the regular chef was off. Hostess was pleasant and we got seated pretty quickly although about 12 minutes later than our reservation (not required but we made one so we shouldn't have to wait.). Lots of tables were open but I guess they were not assigned wait staff.
Waitress was a little slow in service and lacking in ongoing follow-up. Had to keep asking for water refills, finally asked how food was about half way thru the meal.
Mussel appetizer was excellent but the large serving only can with two slices of bread.
Flank steak special was tough, more fat than normal and disappointing. Lobster tail add on was presented very well but cool even though overcooked so it was tough and chewy.
Seafood deep fry combo was excellent.
Table bread was excellent.
A friend and I meet here every year, and this time, while the food is always good, it was GREAT! I had the Chicken Pasta - Beer battered chicken, spinach, crumbled bacon, tomatoes, Parmesan cream and cavatappi. My friend had the Ravioli - Ricotta and spinach stuffed, grilled artichokes, and oven-roasted tomatoes in a basil butter sauce.
We looked at each other when we had the first bite and were amazed at how great both dishes were. We each had a dessert, and that plus our great waitress made us both say - 'We've GOT to do this more often!'
Food was outstanding but the ambiance was lacking. I would go here again just for the food!
We have eaten here a few times (coming from NB Canada). We enjoy the food and area.
Food was very good.
Seating was a problem. We had a 5:45 open table reservation. Arrived at 5:15 and was told we would seat you at your reservation time of 5:45 even though a number of tables were available.
Our waitress had an "I don't care" attitude. Tuesday evening family dinner. Restaurant was not full, bar was almost empty , not many patrons. Piano music was lovely. Glad we had reservations though. We "waited" for everything, water, food, refills, had to ask for dessert menu. Had to ask for check. All the meals were delicious, but the most expensive meal was also the smallest portion (seared scallops). We are local to the area.
