About MP Taverna - Irvington
Chef Michael Psilakis introduces his award-winning Greek-inspired cuisine to Westchester with the opening of MP Taverna, a modern interpretation of a traditional Greek tavern.
MP Taverna’s accessible menu brings Psilakis’ Greek fare into the American culinary lexicon and is another step towards the chef’s goal of putting Greek cuisine on the culinary main stage. “The memories I have of cooking with my family are the inspiration for my restaurants, and I hope my guests create their own memories through their dining experiences at MP Taverna,” says Chef Michael Psilakis. “I want MP Taverna to be a destination for more than just a celebratory meal; a place that conjures the familiarity of your dining room table at home.”

MP Taverna - Irvington Ratings and Reviews
I was totally underwhelmed by MP Taverna. The last time I went, it was fresh and delicious. This time we were totally rushed. The server didn’t know much about Greek food when asked and the sauces in the starter dishes seemed to heavy and over cooked. My fish and smashed potatoes were amazing as was my husbands lamb. However, service was lacking so much that I just don’t see myself going again.
Very inviting ambiance. The server was very solicitous and knew the dishes very well. The food was very good. Perfect branzini. The portions are not huge, so you will leave sated but not bursting at the seams. A note of caution about the pastas. The sauce they use is on the spicy side, so keep that in mind before you order. The eggplant dip was very well done, and perfectly complemented by warm pita. Polished everything off with a brownie that was really nice.
It’s a nice place and lively.
The food however, can be a bit greasy.
The vegetables, although ordered without butter or oil, came soaked in oil. The fish, ordered -simply grilled- was burnt.
Lamb shank too greasy
Paella was very appreciated by the diner.
Grilled pineapple desert was not paired well as served with feta.
My favorite place for lunch, since the menu is varied, there are always daily specials, it's possible to have a conversation without shouting, and it's just a nice, relaxed atmosphere. Dinner is also great for foodies, but it's noisy and crowded in the evening.
Each meal we have at MP Taverna is better than the last -- they always outdo themselves. The service is warm and friendly; the food is OUTSTANDING and portions are generous. We loved going for New Year's Eve and being able to enjoy the regular menu. Michael Psilakis offers fresh, creative, unbelievably delicious food and cocktails, and it's wonderful to have a restaurant like this without having to schlep into Manhattan. Our thanks to the whole team!
I am a big foodie and thought the food was very good and the prices were very reasonable for a restaurant of this size. The big disappointment was the service. It was horrible. The staff was polite but they disappeared after the food was put on the table. I was dying for water and the dessert took forever to be served. Getting a check was an adventure as well. I really enjoyed the food but I will not sure I will be back. The next time i want greek food I could save time by going to Astoria to eat.
We had a $100 gift certificate and the bill, with the tip, would have exceeded that. The waitress, for some reason, only used the bill amount leaving me $10 on the gift certificate. She insisted I could not use the certificate for the tip. Since I know we will be going back I just tipped in cash but that is not how it should work. I didn't make a big deal about it or ask for a manager. Also. We waited a half hour to sit since we would not accept a table next to a window when it was 2 degrees outside. We will definitely return since the food is great and past experiences have always gonexwell.
First off I made the reservation for 8:45, I got a phone call two days later asking me to make it earlier because the kitchen closes at 9 and they "did not want to rush" me. We changed our evening to accomodate them. I would have cancelled but it was Christmas Eve and reservations were scarce. Food was great. Service was not. We arrived and on the bar was a glass rack where obviously someone was stocking glassware, but the rack was still there when we left and there was another one! The waiter who sat us changed during our time there but left his work clothes piled up on the hostess stand while he did something else, which looked horrible. We ordered a trio of Greek dips and what came was just hummus, when we asked they brought us the trio but did not charge us for either. They said it was on them, which was very nice but how can the place make money if they keep giving stuff away. Anyway the foor was AWESOMW but the service was equally HORRIBLE. It is a shame.
We’ve been to MP Taverna several times, but this time our experience was subpar. No one came to our table for several minutes after we were seated; finally the host or owner came to take drink orders. He was very attentive and actually took our meal order as well, but it seemed strange that our waitress was so absent until 20+ minutes into our reservation. We ordered the pita bread appetizer; about 1/3 of the breads were burned and inedible. I ordered the branzino - also overcooked. My son’s hamburger bun was even burned! It seems like all of the stoves were set too high - or the food was as unattended as we were. A pretty disappointing experience for Christmas Eve.
The first time we came here we did not have a great experience. However, we went back over the weekend and it was a completely different (and better) experience. The food was wonderful (as it was on our previous visit) and the staff was very friendly and attentive. We had an amazing meal!
I have eaten at this restaurant many times and enjoyed it in the past. This time the dish I ordered, which I have had before and enjoyed, the fusilli, came as rigatoni instead. I was assured it was the correct order. Instead of roasted tomatoes and spicy croutons there was a mushy tomato sauce that was so overpoweringly spiced that I could not eat it after a few bites. There were no croutons at all. I sent it back and just asked it to be taken off the bill which it was. The waiter told me that the chef said they had no fusilli.
Then a waitress slipped and spilled something all over my coat which was on the bench of the booth behind our table as there was no greeter to show us to our table (our friend was there ahead of us, so we found our table on our own), and place to put our coats and the restaurant was mostly empty. I discovered what a mess my coat was after I got home. I could not see it in the restaurant as it was dark. The waitress had taken my coat and had placed it on the floor behind the maitre d's area; I had to find it myself.
It was difficult to get our waiter's attention during our meal which was hard to understand as the restaurant had very few people there.
A very disappointing experience!
The kitchen had our dishes wrong twice. My wife asked that her salad not to have onions. Of course, it came with onions. We asked for a whole fish (which was on the menu) but it came in butterfly style. The manager then had the gall to suggest that we should take it anyway because it would take another 20 minutes to make the right one. With all of these mistakes, any other restaurant would offer you a free dish or drink, but this restaurant offered nothing. We had a horrible experience. STAY AWAY.
We've now been twice and both times we had excellent meals. Two highlights were the grilled branzino, which was perfectly cooked and presented, and the lamb shank, which was tender, rich and intensely flavored. The day we were in a hurry for a performance nearby, service was quick and attentive, the day we had a more leisurely meal with friends, the service was also relaxed. MP Taverna is definitely a new addition to our list of favorites.
We went for a Sunday brunch. The food was excellent - eggs florentine . The service was good. The only disappointment was it was listed as a jazz brunch and there was no music. When we inquired we were told some customers complained about the music. I hope they will reconsider and bring the music back , at least once a month.
MP Taverna has a unique 1/2 bottle wine menu which I loved. They will pour you a 1/2 bottle of a wine and put it in a carafe and the prices are reasonable. We had a delicious Amarone which I usually don't order out because it is a pricey wine. The food was rather good we had simple baked chicken and a souvlaki which could of had a juicier sauce . The service was very slow. That was my only issue. Otherwise try it!
I used to live nearby and this was one of our favorite places. So it was an obvious choice for my first visit in a couple years. Unfortunately, my experience tonight ended up being a big disappointment. Maybe it was a bad night. But I don’t know about that since there did not seem to be any awareness from the manager or waiter that anything was wrong. We were seated right away after checking in - so far so good. The bus person offered us water and asked if we wanted sparkling, which we did and he brought it. And I asked for the Dip Trio. Great. The waiter however did not appear for several minutes. When he did, he was aware of the dip order. Great! He recommended the Dorado. I ordered it. My daughter ordered a chicken Souvlaki pita and her friend ordered the grilled salmon. And a sprite. We also chose an order of meatballs as another app. The apps took a while but just short of “too long” and were good. Then the long wait began. we asked for more pita when the dips came. They did not arrive. No sprite either. And after 45 minutes post-appetizer we still had no meal. At 8:30 (an hour after we sat down) I flagged down the manager and asked him to check on our dinner. It took another 5-7 minutes and he (the manager) appeared with our food. My fish was completely dry and horribly over cooked. Just heat blasted. The salmon was also super dry and over cooked. And nobody ever acknowledged how bad all of it was. Oh well. This place is off my list.
We were seated near the kitchen at a four top. The waiter didn’t seem to understand our order and we had to repeat it many times. The menu didn’t list all the ingredients in the salads. My friend can’t eat peppers and they were in everything even the hummus. We were being pushed along towards the end of dinner. The waiter finally said if you’re not ordering dessert I will bring your check. There were still people at other tables but the staff was clearly ready for us to leave.
I have been to MP many times for good food and this time lived up to all the past of a reliably good meal. I have never seen it so empty there and must be as it is restaurant week next week but it was quiet and pleasant. Usually it is filled and difficult to get in without much prior planning. Love the soup of butternut squash. Great salad and wonderful souvlaki. Highly recommend.
Very pleasant and accommodating. Our server was first rate and could not have been more helpful. We have been to the restaurant several times. The food always is very good and extremely good value. I am a big fan of the lemon chicken. It is a very generous portion and good every time. I would recommend the restaurant highly.
