Been to the ASTORIA location many times and was shocked to walk in and find the restaurant with only 2 other tables at 7:30 this past sunday night. Was greeted warmly by Dan V at the front door and was told to take any table we wanted and he'd be right over with the menus. Dan was very friendly and personable. He let us know of which items were 86'd and took our drink orders. All of the food & drinks came out in a timely manner. The dips with pita were great even though they were out of Tarama. The portion was also much larger than what we usually get in Astoria. The grilled octopus is always a favorite & didn't disappoint. However grandmas meatballs were just ok. One being quite undercooked. All four entrees were tasty and large. We were too full for dessert.
We went for Sunday brunch right when the restaurant opened at noon. I was disappointed with the restaurant. It was dirty and looked like it hadn't been swept from the night before. The bathroom hadn't been cleaned and there were empty glasses left on the counters and garbage on the floor. There were only three tables of customers when I was there but service was very slow. The dips were good but the skillet was overcooked. I've been to the Astoria location which was much better.
I was at MP Taverna for Sunday brunch recently and it was as good as I had hoped it would be ever since I first heard about the Williamsburg branch of this Michael Psilakis restaurant. The eggs Florentine (a la greque) were rich and delicious, and the egg souvlaki was wonderful too. It was especially nice that my husband was able to put in a vegetarian version request (no sausage). The service was very hospitable and the space was large and inviting. We definitely plan for come back for more!
Worst experience in a restaurant yet. Beyond disappointed.
We had the most rude waiter I've ever experienced - he was unhelpful and tried to prevent us from ordering drinks because of noise levels - even though we were a table of ten and the restaurant was completely empty. I will never go back - I was shocked and appalled at the service and our treatment.
We had rather an odd experience at MP Taverna. To start with we waited about 10 minutes at the front desk before being tended to, several staff walked by and did not seem too interested in helping the 4 of us.
Finally we were seated. Our server was a strange character, some of the things he came out with left us scratching our heads asking what is this guy on? We also learned that there was not draft beer as the pumps were all out of service. The food was nice enough, but frankly I wanted as little to do with the awkward waiter as possible. I was happy to pay the check and leave. I think we'll give this place a miss in the future.
scallop app excellent, lamb chops great, mixed grill enough for twp, attentive wait staff
MP Taverna is a terrific addition by the owner-chef-creator. It was worth the drive from Manhattan to Brooklyn. The octopus was the best you could find, the whole branzini was authentic and lovely, and the meatballs were sensational. The Greek paella made with orzo, mussels, shrimp, clams and Greek sausage was a terrific invention. And yes, they even concocted a Metaxa cocktail. Our waiter was particularly wonderful -- friendly and able to deal with the repartee and banter that was dished out. It was late brunch time, but we opted for Greek food.
Empty restaurant, food isn't good.
I had a wonderful experience at MP the lamb sausage was delicious and the four dips were great. The service was good I was well attended by the waiter.I would definitely go back and tell a friend.
The whole family likes coming back. In both occasion we've been here my son's 1st communion celebration & my husband's bday the food are great, people are friendly & location is relaxing.
First of all we looked up this place in the "Restaurant Week"website and when we were seated and asked for a "Restaurant Week" menu we were told by the waiter that they were asked to participate and said no but they were still listed by the " Restaurant Week" people. We said that's ok we'll still order. When asked if we wanted cocktails I asked if they made a good margarita. He said yes everything they make is good because the place is owned by celebrity chef Michael Psilakis.Sorry we never heard of him. Guess we are not cool enough and don't watch Food Network enough. The Margarita was pretty good I guess, I would have liked more lime.We had the Cypriot Salad, Hummus,Hanger Steak with Greek sausage and Cauliflower with fried peppers. All were pretty boring, the Hanger Steak was a little burnt on the end, we asked for it to be prepared medium. I thought that a celebrity chef restaurant the specializes in middle eastern food wouldn't have such bland cauliflower. The best thing we had there was the Choclate Halva Brownie, that was really different and delicious.
Although we had a reservation it took them 30 mins to seat us. This is on top of waiting for a host to show up at the door for 10 minutes. Once we were seated the service was fast and the food was delicious.
Great local spot for excellent food!
Had brunch, although it was ok, I think the proper Greek dishes were more interesting to try rather than alternative egg florentine (with bechamel). Service was good.
Second time there. Food is great but menu is short so not much selection. Also, don't expect any traditional Greek dishes. We love the Octopus appetizer and mixed grill.
Nice and specious place. Food is good and in large quantities relevant to the price.
OUTSTANDINGLY WONDERFUL FOOD!!! SEVERAL 'MUST DO's': include the Branzino.
LOOKING FORWARD TO MY RETURN. CONTINUED SUCCESS!!!
Overpriced, terrible waiter, slow yet empty inside
Great place for my large group. The restaurant was surprisingly undercrowded, which means the service was great and very attentive. Great brunch food and cocktails
Loved this place but it wasn't cheap. I had a traditional greek salad and the roasted tomato eggs (brunch) and it was amazing. The service is really nice.
We had never been there before but are all international business people from different backgrounds, we spent 3 hours having pleasant conversation and a nice dinner with drinks, our waitress was extremely attentive and looked after us very well.
Wonderful service... no need for reservations on a Friday which was odd, but welcome. Beautiful ambience and food was very quick and yummy. The fries are to die for...
I read some negative reviews about the service, but our experience was very different. Everything was perfect and I have food allergies.
As ever, MP Taverna consistently delivers an amazing (and totally affordable) dinner experience. They can accommodate big groups and the drinks, food and service are all outstanding. It is so refreshing to walk in to a restaurant and immediately feel that they want you to have a wonderful evening.
I went to MP taverna for brunch with friends, the food was really good and the service was great!
The dining room was fairly empty with the max of 4 tables being in service in a very big dining room. The AC was cranking and it was freezing but great music, nice tables, clean and spacious. The waitress put on long sleeve shirt half way through our dinner, she must have been cold too.
The service was weak as the waitress would walk about but not check in. Would give us our dinner menus and not come back for awhile and same thing for the desert menu, where the whole experience was stretched to 1.5 hours when it was not busy at all (2 beer, 2 appetizers, 3 entree, 1 desert). The waitress did notice when our beers were done and to ask if we would like another but did not notice that all three water glasses were empty and I had to get her attention to ask for more water (Greek food can be rather salty).
We were steered away from the calamari with a "that is our least popular appetizer" and steered towards the scallops. I later overheard the waitress trying to steer the other tables to the scallops "our second most popular appetizer after the octopus (which was not available)". It was a Monday and my guess is that hey were probably pushing the remaining fish left over from the weekend.
When it was time to check whether we wanted dessert it was "how are you" and i said "good, how are you" and then i got "ah what?... how are you?...would you like to see the desert menu?" I thought that was an odd way to check to see if we wanted to see the desert menu.
The food was good but pricey. I understand that it's the neighborhood, it's a big space, it's fairly new and I would think big overhead so that justifies the price point. We were not looking for great value just expected the service to be better, did not feel we were in competent hands where someone was looking our for our dining experience.
Roasted Sea Scallops
Baby Lamb Chops
$148 plus tip
Server was extremely pushy and did hard sell on extra food and 95 rib eye. It was very annoying
The food was so good!! The service was amazing. The waiter was so nice! I would come back again.
Absolutely delicious meal with oustanding, attentive service!
The food was amazing, the hummus is a must have. I would go anytime.
The appetizers, mezes and entres were very good, the desserts and coffee were not.
Food was good, I had the Branzino. It was the restaurant week menu. My husband didn't love his orzo dish. Our waiter was great. We would try it again.
I ordered the grilled octopus app and my girlfriend ordered the hummus. Both were spectacular and a decent portion size too to get you started for the main dish. The octopus legs were cooked well and the sauce and chick pea salad was out of this world. I also ordered the branzino which can be fishy at times but the chef made it great. The sauce in which it was in was fabulous, the potatoes were cooked perfectly and the olives were the best part. My girlfriend ordered the lemon butter chicken which came out as a whole breast and thigh and it was so juicy. For dessert we had the Greek yogurt with honey and the chocolate brownie. Both were spectacular
This is a relatively new addition to the MP 'stable'. The food is excellent with generous portions, well prepared and nicely served. Service was very pleasant, friendly and courteous. It is a large space and might get noisy when full but tables are set well apart and the atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable. This is definitely one which we would return to.
Came here for the first time to celebrate a friend's birthday. the food was unique and pretty good… service was great and overall was a very well night spent there…
We tried this place out during restaurant week and the food was absolutely phenomenal. We started with the Greek Salad and Roasted Octopus and both were so good: not only the ingredients were fresh but the spices and flavors were so unique and memorable. For the main course we took the Branzino and the Spicy Greek Paella - both were outstanding in their tastes. The restaurant and service exceeded our expectations. We loved the food so much that I ordered the Chef's book (How to Roast a Lamb) on Amazon.
I love the healthy choices of food here. The wait staff is always eager to please and will make accommodations for special dietary needs. The music was pleasant and not too loud. We were able to have a conversation and hear each other easily. The food was served in a timely manner and we will return. The octopus is my favorite!
Had a very bad experience of basically, bad food. On top of that, had the whole fish which wasn't fresh at all and ended up hugging the toilet throughout the night. Will never come back.
