About MP Taverna - Astoria
Michael Psilakis will bring his award-winning Greek-inspired cuisine to Astoria with the opening of MP Taverna, a modern interpretation of a traditional Greek tavern. With locations in Long Island and Westchester, MP Taverna’s accessible menu brings Psilakis’ Greek fare into the American culinary lexicon and is another step towards the chef’s goal of putting Greek cuisine on the culinary main stage.

MP Taverna - Astoria Ratings and Reviews
I was very disappointed in this restaurant. I made reservations well in advance for my 2 grown children’s birthdays. They sat us in a corner where the 5 of us squeezed in and I was against a cold window and had to keep my coat on. I had asked for a better table and the waitress responded that the upstairs was closed!
The food was average and the service was less than average and we waited a very long time for our meals. We just wanted to leave after eating but to apologize for everything above the waitress brought over 2 desserts with candles which was very nice but didn’t make up for the bad experience at MP Taverna.
We enjoyed our food and cocktail (only one of us drank), and the service was excellent. Our two top was tightly enough wedged between others that the person behind me kept banging into the back of my chair. More of an issue for us was the dreary old Motown playlist - every song overfamiliar, and unnecessary to hear again. No surprises in the bunch. There's so much great Greek music - why not play that? Is it necessary for the environment to be so deadeningly pedestrian and middle-of-the-road, even though it's Queens?
Great food every time I’ve been here. Service on the other hand has always been ok. Except this time. I will attribute it to being a holiday (Thanksgiving)but I have to say it was very disappointing. I am very understanding during the holidays, but I do still believe certain basics should be expected during any dining experience. Great food but use your judgement when choosing this place, dependent on the dining experience you are looking for.
The upstairs needs to be available and not kept for special groups. The upstairs was always avail when it first opened and now there is always an excuse as to why I can't sit upstairs. The dining experience is much better upstairs and it needs to be an option.
This is an excellent Greek taverna. The dining area is pleasant, but with the emphasis more on the food itself than on fancy decor. In addition to offering most of the dishes you would expect, there also are some interesting dishes created by chef Michael Psilakis. Service was willing and helpful.
Came to restaurant for my daughter's birthday for brunch. Server did not come to our table for a long time, we had to ask for a server several times. Finally she came, drinks took over 15 minutes, we had to ask twice until finally they were brought over. The food took forever as well, and only three of us got our meal, they forgot one of the orders, we had to repeatedly ask where is "his food". The three of us were almost done with our meal when the last dish was brought out, without even as an apology. We all gave him a taste of our food. Finally when his food came, he didn't eat much of it. I asked to speak with a manager, but no one came to speak with us or ask us how was "anything". I didn't want to make my daughter feel bad, since she recommended this restaurant, so I did not make a stink about this whole issue, but I was very disappointed. In between the meal, our server was changed and she was very nice, but my overall experience was not pleasant to say the least. I hope this place gets their act together.
Disappointed. The food was ok, but didn’t deliver a culinary experience as I expected. Started off with three spreads and pita, chickpea, eggplant, and yogurt. I enjoyed two of the three and the warm pita. The main course was the special NP branzino. We found it way too salty with the olives and capers. It came with a few fingerlings, some not cooked through, and roasted cherry tomatoes. There was some char on the branzino, but not nearly enough for taste, and the lemon dressing was tasteless. Wine choices by the glass were of poor quality and had little body. We asked for a bit more pita during the entree and were charged, a mistake that an establishment shouldn’t make on a $100 bill if they want return customers. We traveled from Manhattan expecting a special experience. That won’t happen again. There were little or no ambiance, but the service was good although the waiter tried to push anything that was an extra or a bit more expensive.
Another great dining experience at MP a Taverna. Food (the swordfish special with red rub), Service (Rocky always the best) and ambiance make this our “go to” in Astoria. The Hospitality is evident in this restaurant as you are always greeted warmly at the door and recognized by the server even if you haven’t been in for a while. Can’t wait for our next time to join you.
MP's food is excellent - based on traditional Greek recipes/dishes, but with a twist. The beer offerings are also great, and go so well with any of the entrees. We always feel satisfied, and moreso -- generous portions. And the service was really outstanding.
Great updated Greek cuisine in a modern and welcoming environment. We have eaten at MP restaurants in both Astoria and Irvington many times, often with a group of 8-10 and have always had great experiences. The restaurant knows how to work with large groups, with terrific wait staff, follow-up by the local manager, and always terrific food choices. The grilled octopus and meatballs were a great addition to the dip appetizers and salads. Always energetic, if not a bit loud, but manageable, a "go to" restaurant for our entire family.
It was our first time at MP Taverna, and it definitely won't be our last. Our waiter, Aziz, was outstanding. Very friendly and helpful, and made sure we enjoyed our visit. He knows that menu inside out and will give you the best recommendations.
Greek Margarita was delicious and refreshing. The tapas we tried, and all the items recommended to us were great. Nice outdoor seating was the cherry on top.
Will definitely be back!
All of our meals were outstanding! The Lamb Risotto was very creamy and delicious! Our only disappointment was that MP was out of Baklava! Our meal was still complimented by the amazing fruit Cremé Brûlée instead! We will be back and hopefully there will be Baklava! Lol
Back to MP again with friends. It does not disappoint
Food very good, service great, no downside since my last review of the place a few years ago
Mezes great, fish very good, octopus grilled just right, and not very Greek, but the sangria went down very easily...
We really enjoyed our experience here. The service was great and the atmosphere was friendly.
We came for summer restaurant week and 2 of us got food items off the restaurant week menu and 2 of us got food items off the regular menu.
The sampler dip was absolutely delicious and was enough for the four of us. I also had the grilled octopus which was cooked properly, tender and tasty. The rest of the dishes however were a bit under seasoned. I had the fusilli dish and another friend had the risotto, which both had feta cheese and we still added salt and pepper. The smashed potato fries were really crunchy and tender at the same time but also required some salt.
Went here for a "pre-theatre" Sunday brunch with my husband. Food was excellent. The service was a little slow, but I blame that on three large parties that were having brunch the same time as we were. No one's fault and the limited staff that was working were doing an admirable job. Will definitely eat here again, but maybe not during Sunday brunch hours.
