Vibrant atmosphere with wonderfully designed plated dishes. I highly recommend a stop here for a memorable meal. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Love the speckled dishes too!
Sweet Basil and Mountain Standard apparently share the same head Chef. If you need to choose between the two, I highly recommend Sweet Basil where we dined the night before we dined at Mountain Standard.
While Mountain Standard had a great wait staff and dining next to the kitchen was a very positive experience in terms of energy and access to fine aromas, I must admit I was rather disappointed with the cuisine. The Rotisserie Chicken was dry and the Chicken Salad was rather boring. The Crab was delicious but should not have been listed as a "main" but rather an appetizer.
Mountain Standard is a "happening place" during ski season and perhaps we just dined at a time when they were not at their best. I would recommend spending $18 and treating the kitchen crew to beer all around as this gesture allows you to extend appreciation to the individuals who worked hard in the kitchen. This may seem rather odd as I was disappointed with the food, but the passion and joy the kitchen spread throughout the venue deserves to be recognized. After all, during these difficult times when our nation is struggling we all need to feel a little joy and a whole lot of passion!!
Wow, on a girls trip to Vail and love Sweet Basil, so gave this a try for dinner. Shared and loved every dish!! Butternut biscuits, peel and eat shrimp, ahi tuna crudo, the most amazing wedge salad, danish pork ribs, brussel sprouts, and warm apple tart. Will definitely eat again on any future visits. Friendly and attentive service; and fun and warm atmosphere!
Great place, great food, great prices!!! We recommended this restaurant to anyone we saw over the weekend.
We had s wonderful experience. The food was fabulous. This was our five visit and all have been great.
5 star food in a casual mountain setting.
The food options are fabulous. The biscuit and country ham is phenomenal. Their cocktails never disappoint.
We keep trying Mountain Standard in the hopes that the chief would stop reinventing food. His so called creativity is questionable. We ordered the trout, and the trout was fantastic, that is, once we found it. The trout was hidden under an assortment of something, while an insipid turnip purée lined the bottom of the plate. We took the top “stuff” off to discover a perfectly cooked piece of trout. How amazing this would have been with a fresh vegetable and a hearty purée of potatoes. This is our second time in a few months. I’ve tried other dishes, but they all come with some “creative” topping. On a previous visit, I ordered the chicken, it had so many strange combination of spices. I’ll go there only for drinks and oysters.
Good overall, but I was expecting a lot more from what is rated one of the best restaurants in Vail. Mocqueca, a Brazilean dish, was not even close to the real thing... tasty, but was more of a paella goes brasilean. The duck breast was good, but the peach in it was feeen and tasteless. Desserts were really good and service was phenomenal... plus the location is really hrs to beat
Great food I think it is one of the top restaurants in Vail, Colorado.
We love Mountain Standard! Whenever we visit Vail it is our go-to restaurant. The menu is inventive and always delicious. The outside patio near the creek is wonderful when the weather is nice, but we still enjoy the ambiance indoors. This is a must visit when you have the good fortune to go to Vail.
WE LOVE MOUNTAIN STANDARD! We came last year for a girls trip and ate here the last night and just fell in love it with it. So this year we ate there two out of three evenings in Vail and than Sunday lunch before we left. Everything is amazing on this menu. From the wedge salad to the trout to the shrimp and grits. Absolutely fabulous!
So I made a reservation a week or so in advance because it was restaurant week and I had family coming into town from California. We make our yearly Vail trip every Fall during restaurant week so my family was really excited. When we got there we gave the hostess our name and she said she didn't see us on the list and that she found our reservation and it was for November 17th? I know for a fact I made it for Friday October 6th @5:15p.m. and clearly I'm now writing a review based on the email confirmation that OpenTable has sent me verifying my reservation.
I had no service in or near the restaurant so I couldn't pull up my confirmation email to verify, there was hardly anyone in the restaurant at the time and the hostess pretty much said there's a good chance we wouldn't be sat. She finally was able to get us a table but it was literally in the corner of the restaurant and it took almost 20 minutes to get it set up, meanwhile, my group is standing there with two small children not knowing whether to stay or leave.
We were finally sat, our server was a little strange and didn't check on us often. It took an extremely long time to receive our entrees (about 45 minutes) again we were there around 5:15p.m. so the restaurant was not packed by then. Two of the steak entrees came out incorrect so we had to send them back. Meanwhile the other two are picking at their food trying to wait and be polite, then when the steaks came back the other two entrees were cold.
By the time the server actually came back and cleared everything he had asked if we wanted to see a dessert menu, at that point we just wanted to pay and leave. We ended up just getting hot chocolate at the ice cream shop a little ways away. My wife and I had been there before and had a great experience which is why we brought our family there. Very different experience this time. As a Chef myself, who's worked in high end restaurants, I was very disappointed with this experience.
I was in town to enjoy a belated birthday massage at a local spa! Luckily, we were in town for restaurant week and Mountain Standard was on the list. After a relatively disappointing meal at another restaurant the night before, we were so pleasantly surprised and happy about our meals at Mountain Standard.
I ordered the grits as my first course and. salmon for my main course. He ordered the biscuit as the first course and duck as main course.
My only slight disappointment was in the portion of the grits and that they were not evenly cooked - there were definitely some smooth bites, but not enough.
I would make the three hour drive to eat here again... It’s quite a haul, but I think it’s worth it.
I’ve lived in CO for a couple of years absolutely can count on one hand how many times I’ve actually had an excellent meal. So glad to add to the numbers!
Awesome! Very innovative and creative and satisfying menu.
As always, we had a great time at Mountain Standard! It never disappoints with the level of service & quality of food.
Truly terrific restaurant in Vail. We had the pimento spread which was fantastic, a couple glasses of wine, and king crab legs. We ordered the oyster shooters too but was hard pressed to find the "tomato water" described on menu in shot glass. This did not ruin our experience. We will be back!
Food is very good and our server excellent. It was very busy.
Innovative dishes. Had the duck breast in a southwestern sauce spin. Really unique.
Always a good meal. Service was a little slow for a sunday night.
Food was delicious! We love the pimento cheese and they had a phenomenal fresh special.
Food was creative, atmosphere lively, drinks yummy and great location. Service was a little spotty but think that was just one waitress and should not reflect the entire staff.
One of the best restaurants in the mountains. Fun and inventive but unpretentious. Perfect for food aficionados.
Very nice dinner - but felt like the restaurant was understaffed for the evening. Will return, but will probably try to go during off hours.
A wonderful dining experience. Our guests were blown away by the food and the service. Ariana was delightful! Your wine steward is a gem. He even got a bottle our guest wanted from Sweet Basil for us to enjoy.
Mountain Standard is one of the best restaurants in Vail. The cuisine is varied and always delicious and creative. It's one of my favorite restaurants along with Sweet Basil which has the same owner. The service is always awesome.
Delicious creative food but menu had lots of great choices if your not too adventurous !
We had a fabulous time at mountain standard! Love, love, love this place. Everything we had was so good, and beautiful presentation. Love the decor. Waitstaff is super friendly. New favorite place to eat in vail
Amazing food and service... highly recommend!
While the food was interesting and well prepared, the wait staff behaved indifferently, not even bothering to mention the night's special. Check-in at hostess also conveyed an indifferent and haughty attitude.
Food and service were both horrible and prices were high, very dissatisfied.
Eaten there for a number of years, but thought the food was sub par this year. Pimento cheese appetizer as good as ever, but thought the Alaskan halibut and shrimp and grits were mediocre at best.
Good food and a great location. One of the best in Vail. On the service side: points added for proactively offering extra toast for one of our appetizers... points deducted for being inattentive and bringing the check without giving us a chance to place an entree order.
Modern mountain aesthetic, on Gore Creek. It doesn't get much better in Vail.
Have dined here on the coldest, snowiest winter's night and on a hot summer's afternoon. Cozy and snug in the winter and breezy and shaded (outdoor table) in the summer.
Disappointing experience!! The peel & eat shrimp were heavily over-seasoned & the main entrees were cold. Do not eat the monkfish curry - it was way too tough & overlooked. Would not recommend!!
Not as good as last year. The appetizers were phenomenal: scallops and bison tartare. My husband got talked into the trout by the waitress. It was a bit of a disappointment. Nothing special. I got the chicken salad which the waitress told me was excellent. It was a letdown. Not much chicken, couldn't even detect the goat cheese and really was something I would never order again. However, the overall service was excellent even though our waitress was not around much. The others filled in to the point where all our needs were met. Also, the margarita was phenomenal.
Don't miss the duck! Best margaritas in Vail. Olives were tasty but skimpy portion size. Love this restaurant--our favorite in Vail. But with this visit, the place seemed a bit dirty. Tables, chairs, floors all need a deep clean. Hopefully that'll get done before winter.
Thanks Great food and atmosphere
As always, our meal was original and tasty! The service was impeccable- we sat out on the patio with a view of Gore Creek. Our table was a little wobbly ( hate that!) Our waitress noticed as soon as we sat down and fixed it without us even having to ask for the little sugar packets to put underneath! This is our go-to place in Vail for great food, ambience, and service :-)
Always have a great experience at MS. Can't wait for our next visit.
